From what I understand we are trying to do tie up a deal for Winston Reid, with Jenkinson moving permanently to West Ham.

Hope so with regards to Reid, will be a shame for jenks to go, but if he was still with us he would have his opportunity now, but when Debuchy is fit he wouldn't be first choice. Hopefully we will be able to get first refusal if we ever want him back

Did a search and came up with some old threads from 2012, so I feel justified in asking.

Ed's what is the situation for Alex Witsel in Russia as with other big players in Russia and Ukraine

The reason I ask:
Are Zenit at all feeling the effects of what is happening in their country? Are players paid in RUBs or EURs? In either case it must be the case that the current economic crisis and sanctions are putting these clubs under pressure?

{Ed002's Note - Axel Witsel is looking for a new challenge, Milan or Olympiakos may be able to provide it but the "not for sale" flag is being flown.

The issue is actually something else. There are a considerable number of "overpaid" players in Russia (Hulk and Witsel are good examples and there are others (e.g. Valbuena, Movsisyan, Kuranyi and Ozbiliz) who are earning significant wages and bonuses).

The Russian Football Union has been trying to negotiate a salary cap (at the behest of the Government) but it is not being well received. The clubs are not in an Anzhi-type situation but would generally welcome a reduction in wages. Three Russian clubs (Zenit St Petersburg, Anzhi Makhachkala and Rubin Kazan) are subject to UEFA sanctions (similar in a way to Manchester City and PSG) and each wants that behind them.

The likely result will be that (a) a salary cap will be gradually introduced over perhaps a three year period, (b) a number of the higher paid players (such as those named above) will be offered a one off payment in exchange for a salary reduction but this may not be attractive to all; (c) a number of the higher paid players (such as those named above) will be sold in the summer.}

Awesome reply Ed002. And here I was thinking you didn't discuss the money.

Great response. I had no idea about the salary cap, it could definitely be an interesting development if it goes through.

Shame for Witsel, player I have always thought highly of and needs to be playing in a more "visible" league.
