Verratti for Arteta anyone?

Believable9 Unbelievable6

{Ed002's Note - Marco Verratti's move to PSG in the summer was unexpected as all indications were for a move to Juventus. If he were available there would be plenty of clubs interested, not least Juventus. There is some interest from Inter, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Monaco as well. PSG are looking to have him sign a new contract.}

08 Apr 2014 08:50:25
{Ed001's Note - they began their search for a successor a while back, just before the 1000th game. Up until then they had expected him to sign, in fact they had scheduled an announcement to be made before that match. Strange, considering it has been him holding off on signing a new deal for a while, so they should have begun the search much sooner, in my opinion.}

When you say they've begun the search, have they spoke to managers? Or just been looking at how the targets are getting on? Can you explain or am I reading into this to much? Cheers eds.

Believable17 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - it is all done through intermediaries, asking potential targets if they would be interested in the job, should it become available. Those that make positive noises will then give a rough idea of the sort of monies that would be involved, ie their salary and transfer budget, to make it happen. Once the club have narrowed it down to a small number, it will then depend on the manager's situation. If the manager has a job already they will have to seek permission to begin proper talks. If the manager is unemployed, then it is simply a case of getting them in to speak to the relevant people at the club, or the relevant people going to meet them.

Right now it still seems to be at the intermediary sounding out stage, trying to narrow down a list to a final shortlist. The way it is going, I wouldn't expect an appointment until the season's placing is decided, to make sure nothing affects the side's focus. That is if they still haven't persuaded Wenger to sign a new deal, which still seems unlikely to me. He has been on the verge of moving on for a while, to let someone else spend the money he had saved up. I sometimes wonder if the problem is just his heart is no longer in it, if he has just become jaded through needing a change or a break. He was always about the cutting edge, finding out what was the latest thing before it became the latest thing, and then applying it.

I remember the one time I was lucky enough to talk to him and he was very much interested in every new development in sports science and trying to keep himself ahead of the game there. These days it seems he has fallen behind, that everyone else has moved on, that he is still working using the developments from back then. That really is nothing like the guy I spoke to. He was so enthusiastic about the future, part of his reasoning for the young players was that he could work with them on new tech etc, they would be open to it and so he could improve them. That just doesn't seem to be happening, not from what I am told anyway, any more. Now Arsenal are bringing in technology the others already have, instead of before everyone else.

Sorry, got a bit carried away there!}

Wow great post there Ed, very interesting. Thanks.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it is lucky for you we have a time limit on editing posts, because I could have filled pages about Wenger! You would have had to scroll down for an hour to reach the end of it. There is one thing I will say for him, no matter whether he is the right man for the job or not, he is a genuinely nice guy and a real gentleman. He has to be, poor guy once got stuck on a long train journey up to the North East with me mam in his carriage. He managed to stay polite and friendly the whole way up, so he must have the patience of a saint to put up with her. Good job he wasn't trying to zip his coat up on the train mind, she would have ended up beating him with it until he accepted defeat and got a new one! Though I am sure she would have found something to nag him about, no doubt his shoelaces being untied or his tie not being done up correctly, for the whole journey.}

Can I ask what sort of technology?

Medical? training methods? tactical preparation?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - everything mate, he was always on the look out for the latest advances and getting someone to check them out for him, if it was not his area. Medical advances would usually have gone through Lewin at one time, I believe he said. Training methods were usually down to the fitness coaches and tactical preparation himself. I think he was a bit of a boy at heart, who just loved to play with new gadgets. But that kind of enthusiasm does rub off on other people, so it can make a huge difference to how the players feel too. It is like going round your mates to see his brand new Ultra HD 84" TV to watch a film you have seen a hundred times before but suddenly it seems like a great new film because it is on a new TV. It is the same with training. A new piece of kit can transform it for you, because you are getting to play with a new toy and the novelty makes it more interesting.}

Hehe that's funny Ed about your mum! Made me crack up. I am sure he is a nice guy, I've never doubted that.

What you're saying makes sense- I think he has been jaded for a while now.

Trying to remain competitive, while having one hand tied around your back for a number of seasons (stadium finance, etc), seeing your best players leave, trying to rebuild new teams, etc, etc. Then to have no silverware for it and often no thanks for it either- professionally that must be difficult and perhaps it's taken its toll.

But when he leaves it will be in good shape financially and with a good core of players for the next manager to tweak the squad, etc- absolute credit for that.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I think he must tire himself out trying to do up his zip, it must be a full training routine on its own, and it probably explains the slump when the coat goes away. He has just worn himself out fiddling with it over the winter and has nothing left to gee up the players with.....

I do feel for the man. I hope he can win us the FA cup and retire or move on with some level of success.

I do feel he has had too much to do, that he has lacked in other areas, which used to be his expertise.

The national team would be his best bet of taking it easy in terms of the schedule, it will enable him to keep his passion of football and watch games to scout his players and he would bring those into the setup who have never had the option to shine in the biggest leagues.

But as far as Arsenal goes, I think its time he took a step down and let someone else with a bit more charisma and enthusiasm take over.

Im going to go out on a limb and say Roberto Martinez is not really going to consider Arsenal is he?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I very much doubt Martinez would consider a move anywhere just yet. He is a nice guy, he won't want to jeopardise his reputation by moving on so soon after arriving, even if wads of cash were thrown his way.}

He looks like a man of integrity and I respect that. Who knows maybe he can be for Everton what wenger was for Arsenal when he started for us.

Every thing has a cycle and sadly our great managers time has come, but like all good things in life, it doesn't end, it just improves and evolves.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he is a genuinely nice guy to be fair to him, I doubt you will find anyone who would say any different. Well maybe a few Liverpool fans!}

Brilliant reply ed, clears a lot up. One more question, with some players saying they hope wenger signs, do you think that there would be an exodus of kinds when he does leave?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it would depend on the replacement. It is likely he would want to get rid of some and bring in his own players at the very least.}

Ed, you reply about how he's got the club in good shape for the next manager is the reason why I rate him higher than anyone ever.

Doing it for the club just so we will be great shape for years to come and to worry more about the club than his own success is almost more of a success than anything achievable in football, what a manager. What a man.

Verrati moved in 2012 not last year. If pogba joins. Psg then juve will want verrati.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi ed, agree with everything you're saying but I was just wondering if you knew of any names they were looking at? If klopp is one what's the chances if getting him?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The club have spoken, through a third party, to Lyon manager Remi Garde.}

Ed001 that's was fascinating reading and the time limit should be removed for Eds, I would have loved to read more thank you

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed do you reckon Klopps representatives will be approached? or if he is part of the short list, or is it likely that remi garde will be the one to replace wenger?

im not really happy with that, shambolic board decisions.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I don't see Klopp leaving Borussia Dortmund for Arsenal.}

Hi eds, do you really see arsenal moving in for a manager like Lyons? He isn't exactly a world class manager and I just think we need to get somebody I who us world class and can get started straight away. I think jurgen klopp is in the same situations as us because they can't keep hold of their best players because bayern keep coming in for them and with them making nothing on the likes of lewandowski I just feel that klopp thinks he has took this club as far as he can and I really do see a move to arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Gunner1 and the difference now is that we don't need to sell anymore. I can see Klopp seeing arsenal as a new challenge and where he has money to spend, etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

Klopp has been at dortmund for quite a few years, 7 years? and he recently signed a contract extension.

1) Dortmund will not want to lose Klopp.
2) Considering he just signed a contract he will probably want to see it out, as a man of his word.

3) What it would take Arsenal, which is buying out his contract and bringing him on board, just means that the board will be uncomfortable doing that.

4) Only with Usmanov in charge I can see us being a bit bolder, right now this old etonian attitude is just B.S

Too many risks, no ambition, and the only ambition is to stay in touching distance of the other teams, and hope they have a bad year before we can capitalise on their misfortune.

Im quite certain that the coach we bring in, will be inept, it will take us a few years of sacking a few coaches and losing key players before Kronke decides its not worth the financial risk and Usmanov Steps in and goes a bit chelsea.

The Fans need to unite for the cause, If wenger is no longer in charge at the end of the season, I do no want a schmuck to come in and ruin what he has built.

if we want to be better we have to go for the best, we can't be getting youths at every leve from novice players to novice managers. It worked in 1996, but this is not 1996, its 2014, and things move at a pace, unheard of.

Agree0 Disagree0

Any chance of Dragan Stojkovic? (Wenger's 'protege' at Grampus)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I cannot sensibly answer "any chance" questions.}

I can rephrase the question if that helps.

"Were Wenger to leave would there be a realistic chance of going for Stojkovic?"

"Is his name on the shortlist, or likely to be?"

"Would Wenger have that kind of input on who the new manager is?"

Kinda just wondered if anyone supposedly 'ITK' had any news on it. Or even an educated guess.

If you don't know, that's fine, it's just my curiosity.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am only aware of the club having spoken to one possible manager and at the moment there has been no decision on whether or not AW will sign a new contract.}

I have heard from more than one source that Wenger is not expected to be at the club next season and the rumoured replacement is an odd choice, but an interesting one. Uwe Rosler.
He performed well with Brentford and turned Wigan round in a very short period of time, into promotion candidates & F A Cup semi-finalists.

Believable9 Unbelievable38

Wenger leaves and we bring in Uwe Rosler? I credit the man tactically, but the name is absolutely unknown and he has no experience of champions league.

1 loss in the first 5 games and the fans will want his head, just because his name is Uwe rosler.

I think Klopp is the only man who can take over for Arsene.

he plays good football, fluent in english and german, unfortunately not french.

he promotes youth and has an impressive record in building teams, also he took dortmund to the finals of cpl.

Agree1 Disagree0

Of course we had all heard of Arsene Wenger before he became our manager and we all wanted George Graham manager of Millwall to replace Don Howe.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its not 1996 anymore, its 2014, it was not as if George Graham had gone 9 years without a trophy and wenger didn't have the pressure, any new manager would have now.

Most managers would jump at the chance to manage Arsenal, but its not like the fans would welcome them all.

Yes, yes, yes, this is genius! You've surpassed yourself Robbie. Despite declaring further down the page that De Boer and Bergkamp will take charge in the summer. Not suggesting it or saying you'd heard a rumour, but declaring it as fact. And now we are going to replace the greatest manager in the clubs history with Uwe Rosler. Uwe flipping Rosler! Classic.

Trust me on this,

Jurgen Klopp has held talks with Arsenal representatives to become manager next season.

Sorted.

Believable31 Unbelievable37

Hope this is true!

Agree0 Disagree0

Dags you are not becoming a Malaga are you mate? LOL where did you get that from.

Agree0 Disagree0

Saw this and I thought "ah awesome, Malaga is back!"

I kinda trust this because it's you dags, don't let us down please! ;)

Oh and get on the blower and get Klopp to bring hummels, Reus, weidenfeller, ah screw it. Just bring the lot of 'em, Jurgen

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see how he fits the profile, and possibly wanting a new challenge, perhaps as he see's bayern as too strong a team, but I really do not think he has met Arsenal or its representatives.

Surely he needs the clubs permission who he is under contract with to have those talks.

I assume arsenal agents have spoken to his agents and possibly some feelers, but I doubt anything beyond that.

I still feel Steve Bould will be our Manager next year.
