“He can play central midfield as well as he has good technique, great mobility and is a good good distance runner. It is where I can have a look at him.”

“He was educated as central midfielder and then played with England under-19 at centre-back and right-back for Southampton and that is where I saw him the first time against us and I liked him.”

The manager followed up these comments in an article on the club’s official website, stating: “[Chambers] can play a major role because in what I observe he has the qualities to impose himself in this part of the team. I believe he can play in defensive midfield and that’s where I see him.”

Some fans from work were saying to me "he's only played a few games, you've massively over paid for him."

Then came the emirates cup and community shield, few would have anticipated what an impression he would make on not just Arsenal fans but football fans all over the country.

Who would have though 12 months ago that Lahm would be used as a defensive mid? Who would have fathomed that a full back could play in the center of the park, in one of the most physically demanding positions on the pitch? Not many people.

£16m for a full back/CB who is potentially a world class talent is a risk, and he's proved a lot of people wrong if his early performances are anything to go by. But £16m for a DMF/RB/CB seems a lot less of a risk and more of a smart investment of dare I say it, the next Lahm?

Praise be Wenger. A genius among mere mortals. He's done it again.

{Ed025's Note - good post that akie mate..

I understand he has found a gem, and he does find plenty of them, even sanogo has impressed me.

but its still early days.

the issue with young players is not their talent but rather achieving their potential.

jack is right now in that category.

many may disagree but I find ravel morrison having all the qualities to make it to the top of the pile, but his head is just not screwed on, and it seems about 99.9% certain he will just be failure with the potential he has.

not putting chambers in that category, right now he is a major addition, but if he can't keep it up to get thru to where we want to see him, it will be as bad as signing andre santos.

but so far soo good.

Let's give the lad a chance. A bit early for Lahm comparisons.
