Just read that mustafi has a better statistics than Maguire 🤷‍♂️.

{Ed047's Note - 😂😂

That's statistics for you Moe!
Did you know according to stats it's impossible for a Bumble Bee to fly?
Apparently it's wing span ratio is far to small to support it's body weight in order to make flying possible, shush don't tell the Bee :-)

Have to say very concerned about our defensive cover could be a very high scoring season for and against.

If you want to get a result against anyone the first thing you have to work out is how to stop your oppents from scoring guaranteeing you a point, second comes how to create chances to have a real opportunity to get all 3 points.
With Arsenal if you crack the first part the second part will always take care of itself giving you virtually every bit as much chance of 3 points as 1.
The first top 6 side in 8 years to concede more chances than we created last season tells it's own story.

Beating United and Chelsea into the top 4 won't be decided in the head to head results it will come down to who doesn't get turned over by Leicester Wolves Palace etc as often as the others do.

G62, I've seen you diss statistics on a few occasions now and I feel you are being entirely unfair to what is essentially a very viable method of getting results from large amounts of data.

Statistics aren't perfect but when collected and analysed correctly they provide feasible representations of the overall data being studied.

Most of the stats thrown around here are poor representations of data collection, and ultimately analysis. Firstly, they don't include near enough of a sample size and secondly it is usually put together by journos who haven't got a clue and just bandy the word statistics about.

I find it hard to believe that it was stats that decided bumble bees can't fly. This has more to do with mechanics and science and little or nothing to do with stats. A cursory browse after you mentioned it seems to suggest that bees flying is a phenomena that had baffled scientists until as recently as 2006 (they've apparently figured it out now) .

Fair comment on the Bee thing Sharpie:-) I know you are a big fan of stats so in fairness it's not so much the stats that are the problem but how people manipulate them to totally distort reality, such as Mustafi and Maguire Moe posted about.
Did you know a couple of years ago it was proven ny science that eating bacon doubles your chances of some diseases?
Non bacon eaters have 1 in 199 chance of these diseases while those who eat bacon have 1 on 198 chance making them statistically twice as likely to suffer, pretty misleading but bacon sales dropped dramatically for a while on the back of it.
It's all about how honestly and totally open the stats are presented.

{Ed047's Note - get you two having a grown up conversation. 😉

We can all do grown up pfffft

Did you you know that statistics suggest that 8 out of 10 statistics could statistically be inaccurate 😂.

{Ed047's Note - wow, who knew, every days a school day! 😂

Hahaha ed047, you should try it sometime mate.

{Ed047's Note - it’s just not for me mate, tried it once, it didn’t go well. 🤪

8.) 06 Aug 2019
06 Aug 2019 21:38:17
Now I am no maths genius G62, but a 1 in 198 chance versus a 1 in 199 chance is in no way anywhere near double, and I can’t believe any news agency would use that statistic, and more importantly unless bacon was able to pull out a weapon and attacked, no statistic would prevent me from partaking in a bacon sarnie, with a splash of brown sauce for good measure.

9.) 06 Aug 2019
06 Aug 2019 21:35:14
Yeah but he started it Ed047 :-)

{Ed047's Note - that’s no excuse mate. 😂

Twice as much chance I should have put Epping mate :-) , as a bacon sarnie fan myself I instantly thought wow 50% more chance until they showed you the the actual figures in context.

In a genuine survey of 100 genuine dentist 80% of the dentists recommended using a certain famous brand of tooth paste.
The bit they didn't mention was the question they were all asked was would you recommend using this particular brand or Just brushing with water alone! meaning 20 of the 100 dentists asked would rather use nothing than that brand ;-)

A stopped watch can statistically be correct more times in a day than a quality Rolex.

The average family size is 4.5 but clearly .5 of a person doesn’t exist.

Stats are brilliant to prove a point and the same stats presented with different assumptions to disprove the same argument

The above stats mean nothing as I don’t like either defender and both way over priced.

12.) 06 Aug 2019
06 Aug 2019 22:47:42
G62, I wouldn't say I "like" statistics but I know they have a place and a purpose when used properly. I'll give you a couple of examples.

Before I came to the UK, I worked at a bank in the credit card fraud department. This was back in the day when using electronic point of sales machines was in its's infancy and most merchants still used those manual flatbed machines that took a print of your card using carbon copy paper and authorisations required a call to the bank. I wrote a program that told us at what time of day fraud was most likely based on hundreds of thousands of data points so we could staff the credit card auth department more efficiently. We reduced fraud by close to 25% using this model alone. Statistics helped.

When I came to the UK, and before off-the-shelf multivariate a/ b testing was mainstream, I was coding systems that used statistics so we could determine what colours buy buttons drove more sales. What text drove more sales. What graphics drove more sales on an online sales page. Again, we used huge data points. And again, statistics helped, as proven by increased sales.

Judging Maguire against Mustafi using statistics taken from 1 or 2 seasons, basically 50 to 60 games, is pointless. The sample size is way too small to be of any real use.

Sharpey, put the bong down lol 😁.

14.) 07 Aug 2019
06 Aug 2019 23:55:56
Wow Sharpey! Are you saying that Mustafi is more likely to commit credit card fraud than maguire?
Or that both of them are more likely to commit it after lunchtime?
Lmao.

15.) 07 Aug 2019
07 Aug 2019 06:52:31
Clockie, still hemp paper for me mate. I'm phallic shape averse.

337, that's not what I'm saying at all. You failed to consider match times and more especially Mustafi's tracking back. That bloke would only steal your credit card when you're asleep so he didn't have to run away with it. Statistics!

16.) 07 Aug 2019
07 Aug 2019 09:45:49
Sharpy mate in this case (stats) would you rate mustafi more than maguire?
Mustafi had more blocks, more tackles, won more tackles, more, more head clearance, more aerial battle won and both conceded the same amount of goals.
I think they forgot to mention mustafi made more mistakes that lead to goals than maguire wholes career lol.

17.) 07 Aug 2019
07 Aug 2019 09:49:05
Your right of course Sharpie stats can be a very useful and a good tool, but like most tools they are very easily misused especially in the hands of those who seek to disguise fiction as fact.

I really like interesting facts and revealing statistics as they are an excellent way of learning and understanding people and life, I really really don't like being deliberately lied to and mislead about people and life by those who use stats to paint a false picture in order to influence others into seeing things their way, so much hatred and trouble in the world is caused by religions political parties and others by deliberately presenting false information as fact in order to gain power and influence over others.

I try to think:
1 who is presenting the information?

2 what's their agenda and what's in it for them if I believe what they tell me?

3 most importantly what is my own experience does it back up their claims?

Like everything else mate stats can be both good and bad depending on who's hands they are in and what their motives are.

18.) 07 Aug 2019
07 Aug 2019 11:04:53
Moe, I think the 80 million fee for Maguire is insane. He's never looked worth that sum whenever I've watched him, but then again I'm not in the business of assessing the worth of footballers. You mention Mustafi's mistakes leading to goals and over the entire course of this pre-season we have heard how very little defensive coaching we do at Arsenal. So with everything being equal, it's possible that Mustafi "could" be a better defender than Maguire if he were given the proper coaching to correct his mistakes.

G62, my least favourite topics are politics and religion. If politics were more about people than self preservation, it would make sense. If religion was more about teaching people to live harmoniously rather than a tool to incite, it would make more sense. Most things in our world have a place when used properly. Statistics stop being statistics as soon as someone skews it to satisfy their own agenda. Then it's just random numbers and far removed from the actual science of something that is in fact quite useful.

P. S: I am statistically not high as I type this particular message.

19.) 07 Aug 2019
07 Aug 2019 11:29:16
Absolutely Sharpie, motive is key and if someone's motives are honest good then I respect what they say regardless if I agree with it or not.
