I've just seen Everton awarded a penalty against Liverpool. I personally don't think it was a foul, but as referee thought otherwise why didn't he send Alexander-Arnold off?

His "foul" has denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity and he certainly has no intention to play the ball when he "fouls" Calvert-Lewin. When David Luiz was sent off against Wolves we were told the referee had no choice but to send him off as he did not try to play the ball and he denied a goal-scoring opportunity.

We were told it wouldn't matter whether there was intention to foul or not. So why does Alexander-Arnold stay on?

Again i don't think it was a penalty in the first place but the referee has seen it differently.

{Ed047's Note - that was one of if not the worst decision I’ve ever seen and he went and looked at the monitor, albeit for a fraction of a second.

Nothing refs and VAR do makes any sense mate!

Ed your last sentence is spot on or then the rules are just too complex for me! When he whistled for penalty my first thought was "he has to send him off as well". He didn't. Then i saw the replay and instantly thought "he's going to overturn the decision". He didn't. I don't even remember who took the penalty and how as i was too confused by the decisions. Apparently it was scored though 😂.

{Ed047's Note - I was the same mate, it was bewildering! 🤦‍♂️🤣

Not being funny but if the same decision was made against a Wolves player and we'd won that game would we still be talking about?

All clubs get good and bad decisions that go for and against them.

{Ed047's Note - don’t know if you’ve seen it 62 but it was a shocker!

Hi G62, i actually accepted the explanation for the Luiz red. He had no intention to foul but he prevented wolves player from scoring and didn't try to play the ball. In these circumstances there was no other choice but to send him off.

I think the same applies here. The foul happens when there's contact between Alexander-Arnold and Calvert-Lewin. Alexander-Arnold is deemed to bring Calvert-Lewin down to prevent him from having a tap-in. No intention to play the ball.

Not sure if this makes a lot of sense but go see it for yourself and maybe then it will. In my opinion the decision has to be either no penalty at all or penalty and a red card.

It was a shocker Ed mate but one the weirdest decisions I've ever seen in football was when the ref allowed Kos to put the ball over the line with his hand for a last minute winner at Burnley, another retired ref tried to justify and explanation the decision after the game but it was totally bizarre the ref saw it but still gave us the goal.

It's football and all clubs get dodgy decisions for and against them.

My favourite example is Pires dived v Portsmouth to make the invincibles 49 game run possible and Rooney dived to stop Henry using his 50 not out out T-shirt
I personally find it easier to just accept footballs swings Just as I accept the roundabouts.

{Ed047's Note - and just when you thought VAR would make it all so simple! 🤣

So did I Ed mate but it's worse with than without in my opinion, at least with Just a ref there were no long ridiculous waits for the bad calls.

{Ed047's Note - it’s mental mate, no idea how they’re going to fix it but they don’t even seem bothered which is even more concerning!

David Luiz red was a joke, the guys got caught out of position, again, then comes running back in a panic. what a surprise he brought the guy down. trent 's is a pen and rightly not a red card.
