Lads have to say about the first penalty yesterday , although there was no contact, the intent was there. I am a referee and to be honest I would have awarded the penalty. If contact had been made , Santi would have a very sore leg, possibly broken. It was trying to get out of the way that made him fall, not a dive.
Just a stupid tackle.
Paul Belfast

Believable4 Unbelievable9

Yes maybe, but then he rolled around holding his leg. Can you explain that?

Agree4 Disagree1

The referee had a very good view of the incident & to my knowledge he hasnt changed his mind. So presumably there was some contact, no matter how minimal.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it was a case of Cazorla expecting the impact from the defender and to take the tackle and falling over his leg so to speak to try and get the penalty. I do not think he deliberatly set out to dive even if there was no contact. You have to ask how come the defender was soo slow and so bad as to totally miss him. Another theroy is that he pulled out mid tackle knowing that it would be a penalty if he caught him and hence made it look a dive?.

Carzorla Did what alot of attackers would do in his situation, it just looked bad beacuse the defender totally missed his intedended tackle. Cazorla perhaps should have admitted to the ref that no contact was made, but lets be honest who else would do that these days.

For me what is worse is when you get the likes of Ashley Young dilberatly dangle a loose leg out to catch the defenders leg take a swan dive to get a penalty becuase of the made up minimal contact just beacuse they know they are losing control of the ball.

No team can really take the moral high ground on this as all have players quilty of this.

I'm so happy that Iitrd till after that game finished to post my thoughts on here.

I'm so proud of the lads today the way they never gave up and grinded out a win to take us only 4 points off top 4 with a decent looking fixture ahead

Henderson once again, take a bow son, you came on a changed the game once again, fantastic runs and a deadly cross

Props to joe cole aswell who stayed calm and finished neatly

I personally was saying bring morgan on and put shelvey in midfield as i felt diame was ripping us apart with his brute strength but credit to BR again for his tactical genius, his subs won us that game in the end

So happy right now, all those haters saying we a one man team, where are you now huh? Thinking of something else to have a dig at us about?

Get in you redmen!!!

Proper wingers/wide men would be nice for sure and Ben Arfa would be a good signing for us , Not sure yet on Rami Stirling too early to say.

The only thing I would say is in going 4-4-2 is although we would have better width and balance, I am not convinced that we have any naturally defensive minded central midfielder's that will give that essential protection in front of back 4.

4-4-2 requires strong athletic box to box midfielder's to make it work as both have the disipline to defend and attack at the right times. Yes we have Diaby that would work well in a 4-4-2 but he is always injured. I feel with all the small technical midfielder's we have with just having 2 in there that we will get out muscled and would not have platform to show our excellent technique.

For me we either buy two Box To Box midfielders (Remember Petit and Vieria were just that and a perfect partnership, big, strong lots of stamina but also good passers) and two proper wide men to make a 4-4-2 more effective or we go for more numbers in having a midfield 5 with what we have and out manouvre bigger stronger sides that way.

Like or Not Wenger has long since moved away from a rigid 4-4-2 with the smaller more technical midfeilders he has purchased and seeming dislike of natural wide men aswell. To change back now would require a bit more of a overhaul and a acceptance he was wrong. I just cant see him going back to it.

What is clear that 4-3-3 what we use now does not work either both in playing central strikers out wide or worse Ramsey? and being overrun in midfield (Arteta is having to work himself to the ground in offering a easy pass to the back 4 and link up with attacks) we are just so overworked in there that we never gain full control in that area, often our 2nd touch in midfield is a 50/50 challange or a frantic rushed pass away.

We need to get our midfielder's closer together in central 5 so we can interchange and create those fast short passing triangles. That move quick triangle move they showed on MOTD against WBA is what we need to be doing much more off and we have plenty of ability to do it. That is when Arsenal are at there best, we can out pass anyside in this EPL when we keep doing that and that is when we can expose the opponents back 4 .

Agree2 Disagree0

09 Dec 2012 19:01:49
We have lost the pacey, incisive, free-flowing attacks that Arsenal where once renound for. Unfortunately, the team we have been 'building' contains the wrong sort of players to create the football that we were notoriously good at.

Firstly, where the f*** are our wingers? Podolski, Walcott, Ramsey, Gervinho, Arsharvin, Rosicky, Ox - these players are NOT wingers.

Solution: Ben Arfa on the right and Sterling on the left with Wilshere and Cazorla I'm the middle, in my opinion, would re-create the inter changing free flowing attacks. Pacey, technical and well balanced. M'Vila or Capoue should be brought to act as holding - sorry but Arteta again is NOT a holding midfielder.

I could go on and on but essentially, the reason we are not fulfilling expectations each footballing season as of late is the fact that many of our players are either played out of position or are quite simply, not good enough.

Cheers

today just showed why arsene and the board are totally lost with the real world - you let the best player at the club leave and now he is deciding big games with vital goals and is sitting pretty at the top of the pile, while we dream about top 4 finishes playing gervinho upfront. it so sad to see we have dropped out of the pecking order it totally gets my goat that we give him to our rivals - fergie might aswell make wenger coach.

although its crazy to see arsenal deciding where the title goes, clichy mistake nasri half hearted and rvp goal .....sounds like a typical arsenal season really!

please arsene give us the old arsenal when we were making headlines for winning honours and expected 3 points every game a clean sheet with players playing their hearts out.

Diame in January please, release clause believed to be less than £5 million, it would be a start in my opinion. After that I think Landreau on a free is a good piece of business and if possible Huntelaar. We need a new left back to replace Santos as he is a winger and not a full back. I would love to see us sell Gervinho and buy ben arfa but we won't under Arsene as he's too stubborn to admit that Gervinho was a poor signing.

Just watching the Mancs fighting it out with Manu 2-1 up at the moment. I have to say old Red Nose deserves all the credit, in my humble opinion they have some average players in that team (as well as some world class of course) but the thing that stands out is how well drilled they are. Every player knows exactly what his job is and sticks to it.

If we could instill this in to our players we would be right up there!

Also Balotelli has just been taken off for a lazy back heel and gone straight down the tunnel on 49 mins, Mancini doesn't take any rubbish.

Out of interest, who are people backing in the Manchester derby? My hate for United has been reignited since the RVP saga but City are always the greatest evil for me. Of course I have no incredibly strong feelings for teams other than my own (particularly now as we are nowhere near them), but I can't help my disappointment at City's vacuous rise. Im a big fan of Arteta but he is not defensive. He could do very well playing in the deep lying role provided he has a ball winner who runs his socks off for 90 minutes, like Vidal does for Pirlo and Khedira does for Alonso.

Its obvious we lack a hardman in midfield, someone whos first instinct is to defend/retrieve possesion.

Yann M'vila
Lars Bender
Victor Wanyama
Jeremy Toulalan
Ettiene Capoue

All up for grabs

Believable11 Unbelievable2

Arteta has adapted well to this role even though it does not come naturally to him, the only problem is that he still tends to give the ball away, and when he is the last man in front of the defence this is a big problem.

Unfortunately the old fashioned 'Hard Man' in midfield role does not exsist anymore, if the typical Roy Keane or Viera were to play today they would be sent of within 20 minutes (they used to get sent off before) as now you cannot tackle anymore unless 100% perfect.

We need a player who wins the ball cleanly and then straight away finds an outlet, very rare player.

pleased with yesterdays performance, dont want to get carried away we might lose our impotece for the next game.
we showed fight and were chasing every ball the only minuses were gervinho _ sometimes i wonder if wenger is stubborn or stupid, he says he didnt see the penalty decision or foul in every interview - yet he doesnt see the game because every gunner fan sitting within view had their head in their hands with gervinhos howlers. he is talented but isnt the finished article he needs to ply his trade in the reserves to gain confidence.
happy to see rosicky back in the fold, his pace and busy play are a joy to watch he links the attack up so well- ramsey should take note and watch him play it can only improve his game.
the less said about the cazorla penalty the better!
the defence was solid but sagna's fitness was a worry at the end - hope he is ok because we are so much more assured with him at right back.
jack was just awesome, the long break hasnt affected his style the guy just oozes class, need to wrap him up in cotton wool
i still think we need a steely defensive midfielder to give the midfield balance - arteta is doing a good job but he does get caught sometimes and doesnt have the pace to recover.
giroud's work off the ball is quality, needs more service though, he gets into good positions but arsenal's tippy tappy football slows the game down and the opportunity is gone. there were so many passes on for him but the ball was passed sideways not forward - this is something i believe we need to improve on - teams expect us to pass them to death we need to mix it now and then - hopefully jack and santi are the men for the killer pass.

PS - wenger gazidas or whoever, please sort out theos contract and give him the extra 10 grand! he gets better every game - him jack ox gibbs are the future at the club and country, the backbone for success.

I think bringing in just a few players could help fill our gaps:

Huntelaar - A must have for me, top teams need top strikers, we would then have 3!
Flamini - Short contract as a squad player, forget the past, he plays like Yossi dose, very smart football brain.
Diame - Cheap and as good as Song was easy!
Holtby - been in my sights for some time now.
Henry - on loan only with another striker in, dont want to be fobbed off with just Henry as it changes nothing!

And the Ballon D'Floor award goes to... Santi Cazorla. He has successfully dethroned Gareth Bale and Luiz Suarez for his superb match-winning displays and tricky technique. Pure classs.
RedBeer.

Believable3 Unbelievable6

Carzorla dives once, how can he even be compared to Suarez who cheats nearly every game and Bale, the most prolific diver English football has seen since Cristiano Ronaldo. Us Arsenal fans are dissapointed Santi dived but he shouldn't be called a diver. Why don't you have a go at United who bribe the refs every weekend.

Detroit Gooner

Agree10 Disagree1

Not defending Cazorla for what he done, afterall he should have gone the ref and said no ref he did not make contact. Although is that asking too much of players today to be honest.

The nature of attacking players is to anticipate contact in the box and some will either try and evade it and become un-balanced when the contact is not made and fall over or will fall over to brace for impact(which is what happened here). For me what is worse and more dilberate cheating is the old dangle a leg out to catch the defender when going past him usually when they realise they will lose the ball.

Both are a form cheating but for me Cazorla was only cheating for not admitting there was no contact to the ref after rather than cheating during the incident.

If you look at the incident even though the defender missed him he was going in with what looked like a strong blocking challange with a low kick towards the ball. Cazarla seen this coming braced for impact and moved the ball away so to speak and was prepared to go over. The defender was just too slow and somehow totally missed the Cazorla. Thing is it is fine margins as if his foot was a inch closer it would have been the most obvious penalty you have seen.

Alot of attackers do this and all teams have players that will do this.

I can also understand why the ref give it as if you look at it in real time from the towards goal it would have looked like a foul. Don't forget aswell as if the ref deems the attempted tackle as reckless he can still give a foul even if no contact was made, maybe he judged it that way.

sheesh things must be bad if we are rejoicing beating wba at home due to two pens

4th or not they are not a great side and will probably tail off eventually and finish mid table

thing is we dont create enough as we used to and when we do we dont have clinical enough players to finish off all the time simple....

we tightened up a little defensively and from defending set plays but still some way of being a top side again

To the person that responded to my Walcott post.
Walcott has been offered £75k per week and you are not comfortable with that i take it?
Are you more comfortable with bendtner on £52k a week then?
One plays and scores for us and one talks about it a lot, would you not agree walcott is worth twice bendtner? or perhaps squilacci? or maybe djourou?
Yes you might find the odd decent player in europe on less money, but if they show any real talent, how long will it be before someone offers a massive pay rise to them?
How long before city or chelsea start throwing £150k at jack, happy to lose him to?
The apathy to our decline is hard enough to accept from the club but heartbreaking to see from our fans.
Moral high ground wins you nothing, the market value will determine what you need to pay to compete and win games, otherwise get use to being excited beating teams like west brom and hoping refs ensure we get the 3 points.

Overall pleased with the performance. Our defence was absolutly solid. Midfield dominated possession for most the game and our attack created quite afew chances. Regardless of a dodgy penalty we deserved to win. Gervinhio could have scored or assisted afew and Podolskis incredible miss at the end. Overall everyone played well, even Gervinhio. He looked Sharp and made some great runs, such a shame is decision making and final ball are both so poor.

Also glad for Wilshere who showed why he's going to become our very own Gerrard. Insane work rate made him stand out more than anything. Still think we need a CDM. Arteta doesn't fill this role well enough for a title contending team.

Think the most impressive things yesterday was one we pressed the ball when WBA had it and the players were very motivated to win and were fighting for everything. Cazorla penalty from were I was sitting it looked a penalty, but I haven't seen it on TV. Was it a pen or not? Downside we did give away a lot of free kicks around our penalty box.

Agree3 Disagree0

09 Dec 2012 10:49:05
Have to agree with pretty much all of that, a quality CDM is a must next month, it would allow Arteta to move up and help us with rotation and cover for Diaby who only god know's when he's coming back and for how long.

We have to keep in mind that in truth the team has yet to fire on all cylinders. Jack gets better every game.

We have to build confidence for January and the big games in that month, that means no room for a step back now. This team playing with real confidence can do things. I don't care what any one says, selling RVP must of depressed the squad on so many levels. To sell a serious chance at the title for £24 million was total bollox, more so to make that team of sows ears (utd) look like a silk purse is even more sickening!

Gervinho has scored goals but still falls short on lots of fronts, so many times yesterday he delivered to late for Giroud's runs.

The window is going to be so important, Walcott is going and splashing the cash isn't what it's all about if you already have a title winning squad, but do we yet, we all know we're short so this time splashing the cash is fricking important.

So yesterday was good overall, we stopped a team that was doing well from doing naff all, I dont care if Santi did a triple Salco, we won. He know's it was naff and won't do it again.

For the 1000th time 'TV5 is a centre back' he plays best there, he likes playing there and has openly said that he will only fill in at Left back in an emergency.

I have always agreed that walcott was to inconsistant and did not develop quickly enough, however he is now one of our better players and showing the potential seen 5yrs ago.
He is good, not great and certainly not world class, but good.
And now, it looks like we can not even hold on to good players. Not world class like cesc and rvp, but good players.
Where and when will this end?
Arsenal and fans talk about sustainable business, how is it sustainable to sell any decent player you have?
Even the silent fans and AKB followers must see that this will end in disaster, its only a matter of time before they start touting JW to man c or chelsea.
A march of 2000 barely scratched the surface, the voices of 60,000 need to let AW and the board know that enough is enough.

Agree with the reply above. We can't make him our highest paid player, who I think is Podolski at the moment on 90, it won't be good for the dressing room. If a player who has been at the club for 6 years and is still only 23/24 (therefore arsenal developed / possibly made), who wears the number 14 shirt and still is holding out for an extra 10 or so thousand a week, then I think we should be questioning him and not AFC.

Sy4,

sorry if my travelling back from the game which usually takes about 12 hours has upset you!

the game
a good result. the boys played well, the slick passing was back and most importantly there was fight there.
I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THE BOOING KICKED THEM INTO GEAR!
jack was immense, just shows how much we missed him last year.
desperately missing a proper dm that would be the difference between doing something special.
GIROUD WAS IMMENSE FOR ME,I JUST LOVED HIS YELLOW CARD,IT SHOWS HE WANTS TO FIGHT FOR THE BADGE,AND NEVER BACKED DOWN WHEN SURROUNDED BY WEST BROM PLAYERS.
SANTI did dive but i really dont give a $h!t if it meant the boys settled so be it.
the ref was right with merts hand ball the west brom player was pulling him from behind i was parallel with the play he was all over him.
GERV is not a pl player he is so easy to read he does not have any tricks for a winger.
THE OX WAS MAN OF THE MATCH FOR ME-he ran his nuts off i cant wait till he plays cm he is going to be better than scholes.

as i said above the dm is for me the reason whY the defence looks shaky at times, when you play attacking full backs you need experienced cover in these positions,M'VILA WOULD BE MY PREFERRED OPTION,I WANT PLAYERS THAT HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE WITH FIGHT.

So we won with 2 dodgy goals but we needed a bit of luck now the boys have to turn it into something.

if any 1 is interested i have a bit of transfer news/rumour.

Giroud does look like he s trying his best, or maybe too hard? He was bought to score goals and seems to be working too hard back in midfield leading to him not being in the right place to finish. I remember this happening to Shearer at Newcastle for a while.
