Jan 2012: Ivan Gazidis, “[Our model] does mean we can't afford to compete with oil money, and we can't afford to compete with super-wealthy individuals from Russia, ”
“Yes, we can't afford to spend £50-70 million on an individual player. But we're proud of the way we do things, and we're proud of the results that we're able to produce from that. ”

Oct 2012: excerpts from the AGM late last year
Q: You’re putting profit on the balance sheet over success on the pitch. You sell our best players. Operating loss of over £16m has affected the transfer dealings. Was RVP sold to comply with UEFA fair play rules?
IVAN: We lose a player like RVP, not because we want to, but have to make sure we are creating a sustainable future for ourselves.

Q: I believe fans and board have different ambitions. Estimates by outside bodies say our uncommitted cash reserves are at £70m. Is this money really available for Wenger to use?
IVAN: We don’t talk publicly about the money we have available despite being transparent. We certainly do make the money we have available for reinvestment into the team. That doesn’t mean that we spend every penny in each transfer window. Within constraints, all money we make is available to make a competitive team. There may be issues with a player in terms of contractual obligations and fitting in with your team. You can buy someone who is available but not top quality, or wait and buy someone who your manager actually wants.

Dec 2012: Ivan Gazidis at a reception with AST members after the Bradford loss, assured them significant funds were available to spend on bringing in players next month.
AST spokesman Tim Payton said: “The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust cannot fathom why £70million was left untouched this summer. Arsene needs to get over his distaste for spending and use the resources that are provided by the hard-pressed fans who watch the team. ”
NOTE- Ivan had not used this “70 million” figure in public.

Jan 2013: Wenger says, "We will spend big (again) because we had restricted finances because we had built the stadium and had to pay that back. ”
"You look at any club who has done that, and they have gone down (in performance). ”
"We stayed at the top level, yes without winning the Premier League, but we were always at the top level. ”
"Now we have come out in a much stronger position financially again, so we can spend. ”

A quick look at the Arsenal books reveals a scary trend. For the past three years, our operational profits have decreased, probably due to growing costs and poor commercial deals, and had it not been for us selling players every year, the club would’ve been run at a loss. We did sell players every year though and we did make a profit as a whole by buying players of lesser quality to replace them. The profits go into the reserve finances and the pennies in Shareholders’ Funds have grown steadily year after year without being put back into the club. The figure as of November 2012 stands at 312, 450,000. It was 297, 548,000 before we sold RVP and Song and bought Santi, Poldi and Ollie. There’s a mention of a “robust financial platform from cash reserves of £123.3 million” in the latest financial holdings report but we’ll have to wait till summer before we can see it being used, if at all.

I’ve tried not to speculate here, like most of us tend to do. I’ve just used quotes from interview quotes and data from the holdings reports available on the Arsenal site. Correct me if any information is wrong.

hey eds, i've got a huge post about the Arsenal finances i'll post up a bit later. could you see if it can manage to be posted this time? i've removed the links this time so it should get through.

also, I saw one of the eds on the Liverpool pages saying they'd be open to an app for the forums if it were made, so could you mail me with what kinda implementation and functionality you'd look for. i've got a month's time before I start work again so I could give it a crack in my free time. cheers.

{Ed033's Note - Thanks, I'll email you

1.) Appreciate the commitment Mike. I know sweet FA about IT but I'd be a happy user!
Love this site! Two windows in and now I'm a daily reader outside of the windows! Big ups too all the Eds!

hey eds, is there any reason why my post about the Arsenal finances didn't get through since yesterday?
the first one had a lot of links to articles so it might've been filtered out, but I removed them from the one today.

i get it if it's the subject matter that's being avoided, but I was just curious as to why it didn't get through. anyways, keep up the great work, mates. {Ed027's Note - i'm not quite sure where it's got to, i reckon the first one would of been removed becasue of the links.

just watching Arteta's interview and funny thing that he mentions about Arsene's approach, ". he relies on the player's character and beliefs of how they need to handle a situation but as well as straightforward in what he has to say. "

explains why our players seem clueless when teams shut up shop and sit back to defend.

we've effectively bowed out of Europe now (unless we can manage another AC Milan-esque performance) and literally no one is happy or buzzing about being a gunner right about now. regardless, we've still got three HUGE games in the league to play before a good ol' German spanking so let's just try and look ahead to the next game for now.

just wanted to say, despite a (quite understandable) brief lull in the first half last night, the fans there were amazing yesterday.
here's hoping for some positivity and some goshdarned luck on the field!

1.) MIKE

the fans deserve more.

arsenal fans/supporters have had enough.

we deserve the truth now.

the club is in turmoil and I can't see who's running the show?

all i'm hearing is rallying cry from peter hill-wood and he's got no legal power at the club,, and he's just come out hospital.

where is stan kroenke?

where is ivan gazidas?

were any of them at the game last night?

can some 1 tell me how many air miles RICHARD LAWS did to do with january transfer target?
did we have any real targets or was wenger B/S us all again?

i want answers.

enough is enough,, I feel like the club has disrespected me long enough.

2.) Of course we deserve more. the kinda displays we've witnessed over the last couple of years, we've been nothing short of being shafted.

i'm just saying that this season's fairly done for us now. we could linger over losses or we can trudge on and try and be positive for what's left to be salvaged of the season.

changes are needed at the club, no doubt, but they're best made after the season instead of rocking an already unstable ship, specially if it's in the managerial department.

3.) Oh, and kroenke was there yesterday I hear.

A possible cause for our dull displays is that Wenger counts on the players thinking on their own about what to do on the field instead of drilling down possible options they could utilise. plus, our bunch, no matter what team you pick, just haven't played with each other as a unit so the flowing game won't work as well for a while now. add the crazy pressure and a vapour-thin confidence and we've got a soap opera cast working on the green.

Justify ticket prices, you say? well, the club won't admit it but our club runs on that money from the fans. our revenues consist of 40% from matchday profits and just over 20% from commercial deals (for Dortmund, it's 20% matchday and 50% commercial). we truly are (were?) paying for the stadium. hope, Charlie. a hope that the people at the club can and do turn rubbish around in time. that's all we've got. i'd suggest you try backing the club before you lose it all.

This is one of the things I hate about Arsene's strategy. we're always trying to score the perfect goal. we try leave the opponents writhing with seizures and soiling their pants while we lay it up for a simple tap-in that anyone except maybe Gervinho would score.

Anyone see him against Sweden when Ibra made him look like a joke? not to put him down because he's a good defender and does his job well, but we need a really top guy. surely Shawcross isn't the best we can do. {Ed027's Note - I'd have him over any of ours, based on their performances this season, they all have been stupidly poor, which leads me to belive it is the coaching, so i take that back lol}

Spot on, mate. if the club does go on to spend, we'll have to spend smart and that can only be done if the manager has the kind of pull to get good players in without being forced to spend silly money on wages. this isn't 1996.
