Thoughts on last night
I think we are not playing the modern game at all. We are not pressing the opponent enough when we are without the ball.

Teams that do this, get the ball quicker and put the opponent out of shape. Look at the Barcelona, Bayern, even down to Chelsea in the premier league. Managers know that if you force a mistake from the opposition, possession comes natuarally. We sit back to much and defend deep and invite teams on us.

It is almost we are told we are inferior to them. Look at teams like Swansea, Southampton who will press the opposition relentlessly.

Commentators here have it wrong when they said guardiola said that the ball should be won back in six seconds. Wrong, the mantra is to force the opponent into a mistake within 6 seconds of losing the ball. (six seconds being how a quick counter attack can lead to a goal), pulling them out of shape for you to take advantage of.

Our grass roots are taught to be physical and fast, and no positional awareness and intelligence is taught. The top teams keep shape at all times, we gets pulled apart too much.

All national sides that are at the top level play like this (barring say Argentina). Look at Chile and Holland against Spain. Chile and Holland pressed, Spain didn't, the rest is history. Again with Germany and Portugal, Italy and England.

What we needed was a Carrick, Wilshire Gerrard base with sterling and Sturbridge supporting Rooney up front. Liliana and Barkley are ones for the future.

A shame could have been a good tournament for us if we had actually looked at how modern teams play.

On another note I hope we get Remy, Kehdira and Gintner, Aurier and Ochoa.if we can get smalling for vermalean in p/x not bad.

Balotelli would be good, but I think he is little too unpredictable.

Fredsta

1.) Completely agree about pressing, I was screaming at the TV when we played Italy telling us to press higher.

2.) You'd have remy over balotelli!?!? Do you not think Remy is unpredictable?
