Shame we didn't go in for him. Wages of £75k per week reportedly a problem for a reserve centre back, plus I can't imagine he would have wanted to play second fiddle behind Mertesacker & Koscielny.

{Ed001's Note - why on earth would anyone consider buying a centre back that they didn't consider an improvement over the extremely lucky to be a footballer considering he always moves in slow motion Mertesacker? If they can't get in the team ahead of him, then they don't deserve to be a professional footballer at Premier League level.}

Hi Ed001 - I believe Wenger considers World Cup winner Mertesacker with 104 caps, to be a first choice alongside Koscielny. Hence any cb signing will be 3rd choice & wages of £75k pw are excessive & problematic in the days of FFP.

{Ed001's Note - I don't care how many World Cups he wins or caps, he is still the most ill suited player to Premier League football in the league. If you can't come up with any real signs of him being quality, other than to point to that kind of non-entity of a stat, then you are proving my point for me. Some utter dross defenders have won the World Cup through the years, next you will be telling me all the Man Utd squad players that picked up numerous title medals down the years are wonderful because of the titles.}

Are you Liverpool ed1?

Sakho? Dirt
Toure? Dirt for 5 years
Lovern? 5#!T

Mert all day ahead of them boys.
Mert and Kos kept the most clean sheets in the league last year. You're boys conceded 50 pre-Lovern. It'll be 60 this year.

{Ed001's Note - I don't see the relevance? Are you 5 years old? Is your dad bigger too? Plus Sakho has shown himself to be excellent for France, Lovren was top class for Southampton and Toure I seem to remember being a part of your invincibles and only an idiot would think he has been dirt for 5 years. The word unlucky to have Vincent Kompany as your direct rival for a place in a team would be closer, if you weren't 5 years old and trying to be a knob that is. Clearly the difference is that they are badly coached, not bad players. Mertesacker has played in one of the strongest teams in the Prem for years, yet he consistently gets shown up, oh unless alongside Koscielny, who carries him well. The only reason he gets a game for Germany is because they are so lacking in defenders that even a half fit Hummels gets a place and Jerome Boateng, who had to leave Man City because he was behind Toure in the pecking order, is one of their mainstays. So if you want to be childish, your dad is still the 5ft1" guy hiding behind your mother's skirts....... But in future grow up and try and keep to the point, if a defender is not good enough to push the ent out of your team then he isn't good enough for the Prem.}

*Sits Back and waits for reply*

Everyone loves a bit of a fight!

I don't agree that Mertesacker is as bad as you make out Ed. But I do agree that he is carried by Kos and should not be the core of our defence.

A new defensive signing should be able to push him out no problem. He was never first choice when Vermaelen was actually half decent!

{Ed001's Note - you aren't intelligent enough to have this discussion with, run along now.}
