So I see Chavski are keeping true to their habit of unnecessary spending in January windows by securing the services of Juan Cuadrado.

£26.4 million for a player who looks as though he'll barely get a sniff at first team football with the way Hazard and Willian are playing at the moment. And it seemed, until recently, that they had the depth to cover those positions with Schurrle and Salah. Now I know Salah's gone out on loan but is spending that amount of money to provide little more than cover for the remainder of the season really what teams should be doing now?

They have a five point lead on City who have been lacklustre to say the least lately, and look poised to increase that to eight this weekend!

Granted it's more than we would do, but I've been happy with what we've done so far by loaning out players in a position is more than congested and brought in a very promising player in a position in which we've sorely been lacking. And with the emergence on Coquelin we've got the steel in the midfield that we need now, though one more signing to provide cover would be nice.

As far as this business Chelsea have done though, it just smacks of buying a player to warm the bench to prevent him from potentially starting for a rival.

Anyone agree?

It was simply about improving the squad. Improving from a position of strength is why they are likely to win the league, rather than fighting over 4th. You can't really fault that!}

not quite the ronaldinho in his barca hey day, that guy was unbeatable, but even a lesser version of the man is a great achievement.

atleast schurrle is not joining some schmucs in wolfsburg after yest hammering.

This is nothing, they have just bought a player so no other team can buy them. Simple.

Hes very quick and skillfullf. But his end product is poor. he's a expensive gervinho. But there getting good money for shurrle. He had a good world cup but it was his climate he was in.

It can take ten years, or more, for work done at youth level to have its full effect. Surely its up to chavs what they do, if they want to spend 100 mil on a 4th choice keeper what's it to do with us or anyone else?
Even if their aim was to stop others signing players which I don't think for a minute it is surely its up to them to run their club as they wish.

I hate to admit it but Chelsea have done this 100% right again, they have got top money for a striker who wants to leave, and has been playing on the wing too often, and signed a top quality winger for what looks like less money.

Whatever they did in the past they now seem to have the buying and selling of players down to a tee.

Maybe we could campaign for a rule change that any side finishing above us has a 1 million per player transfer limit imposed on them for 10 years :-)
The 25 man squad rule has been excellent at stopping side's buying players for the sake of it

Ed001 17 years 1 youth team player makes the grade John Terry, 11 years Abramovich has owned club, 0 youth team players made the grade, I completely understand how youth team football works and why it doesn't. Facts are facts. When you pay 15-30 million on squad players you are not giving youth a chance. When your manager talks about bringing youth through but doesn't rotate his squad through fear of defeat and tries to spend his way to titles, you are not giving youth a chance. When you buy young talented players and loan those players back to those lesser clubs you are basically showing a lack of faith in your own coaching set up. How long should we wait for them to see the fruition of their youth development? You said ten years but it has already been 11. Surely you can see my point?

{Ed002's Note - It is nonsense. The youth players have been coming through and going on loan. Some will make it and others won't. At the moment the likes of Ake, Boga, Bamford, Loftus-Cheek, Solanke, Christiensen and others all have encouraging looking careers ahead of them.

Cuadrado was purchased to replace Schurrle which is what this thread started as. It is hard to see what was wrong with that.}

I appreciate as an Arsenal fan the service our academy does for other teams and don't doubt for a second that Chelsea provide the same service. I was talking about players that make the grade at Chelsea. You are correct that the thread started about the signing of one expensive bench warmer replacing another and apologize for taking the opportunity to have a rant about this anti-football club.

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea have been investing in their academy and buying younger players and putting them out on loan - the likes of Hazard and possibly others will move in to the first team squad next season. They have been balancing the books on transfers for a number of years.

Swapping Schurrle for Cuadrado with barely any money lost is good business, not unnecessary spending.
I will admit I don't like how many youth players Chelsea seems to buy and loan out these days (pretty soon entire leagues will be made up of their loan players), but you can't fault them for swapping a player for a better player lol

Last I checked, City were major players to sign Cuadrado as well. And I've been out of the loop for the last few weeks so I wasn't aware of Schurrles situation. Makes a bit more sense now.

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what City you are referring to, but certainly not Manchester City. Chelsea has had a sustained interest in Cuadrado.}

So as per Ed the example is sell Matic and buy him again at double the price. Hmmm seems intresting enough. Wasnt salah being bough to replace Matic, and what happened to the poor lad.
