Seeing as Koscielny and Mertesacker seem to play good together and our need for a proper defensive midfielder, just being curious, could Captain Vermaelen be used there? Obviously it'd be a huge risk to play him there this late in the season, but I'm sure he would be able to do a pretty good job there. Thoughts?

GunnerFromMelbourne

1.) Im interested in what your squad formation would look like

2.) Think you're right. Verm good on the ball but not disciplined enough as regards in terms of defensive positioning. DM for V not a bad idea at all.

Stewart

3.) He might do an ok job but its a big risk. Def midfield players need to be able to receive the ball and retain it under pressure from other players, much more than defenders normally have to. Alex Song and Gilberto were great at this. TV is untested for this skill

4.) Ive been saying this for atleast half a season, the only trouble I find with it (apart from the possability of it not working) is that we have no cb back up if one is injured/unavailable, but tbh say mert gets injured, drop tommyv back and sub on another midfielder solves that for the immediate (during the game) problem

5.) The danger of having all three on the field at once is we have no central defensive backup.

6.) I guess it would be some sort of variant on a 4-3-3 with Vermaelen as the defensive mid, Wilshere and Arteta helping build attack and defend.
Or a 4-2-3-1 type of thing. With Arteta and Vermaelen, it would allow Arteta to be involved in creating the attack a bit more than usual.

I don't expect this to happen, just a thought.

7.) I don't think coquelin deserves to be ousted from his position by an out of form defender. If vermaelen has to be benched as a defender, so be it.

8.) If you we was to do that I would say it would have to line up like so:
Sczeny-gibbs-pm5-kos-jenks-verms-arteta-jack-santi-theo-giroud.

i would give fabianski a chance to show himself after last nite. jenks should be there ahead of sagna as he dosnt show e wants to play with us anymore. gibbs and monreal is a tough one. santi ahead of gerv or poldi on the left wing. yes if we play verm in dm it does leave us lite at CB if one gets injured but you drop verm back in give miguel the chance to step up.

9.) I did hear a rumour in the summer that Verthonghen did not come to us because AW wanted him to play dm, and he did not fancy it. TV5 I think is worth a go there providing he is of the right frame of mind which at the moment he doesn't seem to be.
Heybridge Gooner

10.) Great Idea.

My team would be -

Cazorla - Giroud - Walcott
- Arteta --- Wilshere -
--- Vermaelen ---
Monreal - Koscielney - Merte - Sagna
- Szcz - {Ed027's Note - Rather play Jenkinson over Sagna, and Fabianski over shezz until he mucks up, lets hope he dose'nt

The post about Coquelin. I like the kid, I personally think he should be playing more as it seems like they think he will be a good defensive mid. He has been impressive the way he goes about it aswell.
However, Vermaelen is the captain. As much as he has had a shocker of a year, I don't believe we should take the captaincy off him because I feel if we do that, we are pretty much going to be selling him. Why would he stay at a club that wouldn't put there trust in him as captain?

12.) There are too many posting here who play too much football manager or something. Playing Verm as def midfield when he's never played there, at this point in his career, seems like a bad idea to me. Especially when on form he's one of our two best CB (Kos and Mert have had as many bad games at CB as Verm - let's ignore the games he played at LB)

13.) I think there is a good chance TM may leave in the summer.

14.) Too much football manager? how hard is it for a cb who regularly pushes too far forward to play a little bit forward than usual, if you think the role is completely different then fair play, but tbh its not. not like were saying play mert as a dm.

15.) The roles are very different in terms of when your side have the ball. A defender rarely has to receive the ball under pressure, and can always get away with hoofing it away. Good defensive midfielder receive under pressure, a give a pass or spread the play. They make themselves available to receive balls in very tight spaces. Its quite different in that sense and that's why there are few players that can do it. How many defenders have made that move before and succeeded - a few but really not that many.

16.) I think Vermaelen could do a job there, and add a bit of steel to our midfield.

17.) Vermaelen could be like luiz, not the best cb but good at getting forward and scoring

18.) Perhaps he could do a job there but do we really want someone that can do a job there. We really should be having someone who is really good and natural. That means buying someone if Coq is not up to it as he is our only natural in that position.

Leave him as a CB who is occasionally wobbly but good at getting forward if needed.

Champions league group - very tough!
Still laughing at Lennon's (Celtic) reaction to that group! Haha
But seriously, we definitely need some signings for us to make it through the group, and still be in the running in the premier league.

Hey eds, I don't think it would happen, but is there any chance we go for Akinfeev? Great keeper, surely he would want a challenge outside of Russia? Would be huge.

Is their interest in him by anyone else at all?
Cheers! {Ed027's Note - I hope so

I believe it will be awesome having a striker of Suarez' quality joining the team, BUT do we need it?

No to Suarez - Attitude problems of Suarez aside, I'm just not really sure we need another striker. Giroud, Podolski and Walcott are more than capable of scoring goals. None of them would get the number of goals Suarez would, but add them all together I think we would be doing awesome. I think the real need is for a gun defensive midfielder, and next area is the creative mid/winger.

Yes to Suarez - he's a player that can change games, one simple act of brilliance and we could steal a win that we haven't been capable of. 30 goals per season striker, guaranteed goals.

Looking at the two arguments, I'm still of the opinion that we don't need a star striker like Suarez.

Thoughts?

GunnerFromMelbourne

1.) We are in need of a player upfront who can score from everywhere inside and outside the box in tight games against top teams. If we sell Gervinho we don't have one player who can win duels with skill. We have a lot of pace in Wallcott, Chambo but we need a player like Suarez badly

2.) We couldn't get a win against the top 3 last season - to progress we need the potency to score against the best. For all his faults LS can give us that.

3.) We had some tight games last season, which usually ended up as draws.

With someone, as you suggest, who has the inspiration, that moment of brilliance, we could've got a win.

yeah definitely someone like suarez is needed.

4.) Arsenal my second team. If Suarez had the support he will get from arsenal he will score a phenomenal amount. From an outsider point of view, you need a player that wants to do nothing just score. Bags of pace and creativity just need a selfish, one track mind goal scored.

Suarez would be amazing at the emirates.

5.) We need that player up front like Henry who could win a game on his own. Suarez has potential or even IS that player, but I am realy doubtfull about him. He got so many issues that is non-football related. Think it is great the club is trying to spend money on world class talent though. Exciting!

Mr T

6.) Superb player. I pray he joins us.

Patience.
Good things come to those who wait, so expect messi to sign in the final hours.

In all seriousness, judge the transfers when it's over.

Every time Arsenal play Chelsea Mourinho insults Wenger about something. I can't blame him for not shaking his hand.

I personally rate Giroud as our striker. Our current team is built to suit him, a striker that contests well in the air and someone who can hold up the ball whilst our numerous attacking minded midfielders push up to create chances. I think another star striker would be brilliant, but I don't see how likely it'll be as it doesn't look like any are really available.

Coquelin is a beast in midfield, but once again, if he gets injured, we would be in big trouble. Someone who we could comfortably rotate with coquelin would be good.

He scored a penalty didn't he?
Really shows his poacher capabilities!

Ed, are any teams interested in Lacina Traore from Anzhi?
6'8, surely he could win a header or 2 in the premier league.

{Ed022's Note - I've seen Per Mertesacker outjumped by Robbie Keane. Height is not always a given that the player will win a header or 2. Not heard of any recent PL interest in Traore to be honest...}

I disagree. Wilshere, statistically may not be the best, but when we are down he is the one busting a gut trying to get us back in it. He shows leadership, in a squad that at the moment, lacks leadership. *IF he can stay injury free, you'll see all the stats start building up aswell.

To be honest, EVERY single player in the world has been linked to Arsenal this transfer window. You can't tell me that the media hasn't been playing it all up.

For all we know, we could have only enquired about 'Higuain', and the media made the 'bids' up.

The media have to sell their story, and what's better than an ACTUAL transfer story? Throwing names around left and right.

So your saying you think Wenger would do that to arsenal?
Your kidding me.

Someone who cares about this club, like the way Wenger has since he started, would pretty much leave it to rot and jump ship?

I'm sorry, your thoughts are pretty disrespectful to a great manager.

The first somewhat positive comment I've read in a long time Nick!

As frustrating as it is, I'm sure there are deals being made, BEHIND the prying eyes of the media. By the time the end of the transfer window comes, I am confident our team will be strong and capable of doing great things this season.
