For the game on Saturday, Jack and Theo have a 90 percent chance of playing, as opposed to Rosicky who is almost definitely out with a small hamstring problem. I think the solution is clear: let Jack slot in for Rosicky and let Gervinho continue on the right, with Walcott as an impact substitute for the hopefully tired defenders who Gervinho would have run ragged (wishful thinking, I know). The team:
Fabianski
Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Monreal
Arteta, Ramsey
Gervinho, Jack, Santi
Giroud

With the likes of Theo, Jenko, Gibbs and Poldi off the bench.
Let's get the 3 points and leave the spurs in our wake.
Looking forward to the home games vs Everton and Man U.
We hold the cards now, COYG

1.) I really can't see Wenger starting Jacky boy. Why rush him back against Norwich.

I see a mf 3 of Ramsey, Coq, Caz

2.) 11 Apr 2013 20:33:01
i think wenger should get santi off the wing in place of rosicky and start podolski on the left

3.) Because getting 3 points against the teams like Norwich are the way we are going to get back into the top 4 and stay there.

To be completely honest Alex Song's departure was a very good thing for us. There are aspects of his game which are well suited to our team, such as the ocassional Hollywood pass/assist, or the crunching tackle to disposess opponents, albeit rather rash. I find it bad how some assists make some Gooners think he deserves a spot in our team, but in truth he would try 6 or 7 of them, and only 1, maybe 2 would come off. When Cesc left, for some reason he thought he could step up and pull the strings, when it was quite clear Arteta can do a better job at that. Many times last season he would attempt Yaya Toure or Vieira-like surges only to lose the ball and leave our back 4 exposed. He wasn't the monster that we so desperately need to protect our back 4, neither is Diaby, and Arteta has done a fantastic job of playing in that position, I'm sure unwillingly, with such discipline. I want Jack and Santi to be the more advanced midfielders, especially Santi, meaning someone like Capoue, Wanyama or Bender is needed, not Alex Song who gave the ball away and only managed to mask his poor form by the ocassional hollywood ball. Isn't and never was good enough.

I cannot understand the criticism of Song on here. You condemn his "Hollywood passes" well excuse him for contributing to our attack and add a new dimension to our play. Our defensive problems last year were 80% down to injuries. At one point we had every natural full back injured. That's no exaggeration either. Song plated as a DM, he broke up attacks with good pressure, made strong tackles and was incredibly hard to dispossess.

That kind of player is what we need now at Arsenal. Its no mystery that once Song left our defence had looked more exposed. Wenger failed to replace him. I expect to be bombarded with disagrees, but I feel the criticism of Song is somewhat incorrect. I will happily contest anyone who thinks otherwise.

Detroit Gooner

2.) Sorry Detroit Gooner, not looking for a fight but I have to disagree. Not with the point that a strong defensive type of player is missing from out midfield but about Song. Last season he played on average 1. 3 key passes a game the previous two season 1 and 0. 9 and in terms of accurate through balls 0. 7 compared to 0. 3 and 0. 5 that isn't a great improvement and in the other season he had Nasri and Fabregas with him, however with them gone he wondered forward and his interceptions were 2 for his last season compared with 2. 7 and 3. 1 previously and his tackles per game were 2. 7 compated to 3. 5 and 3. 3 which for me anyways highlights that he negated his defensive responsibilites to try to replace fabregas with limited success, and he was asked to defend not attack many players want to get forward but have to take one for the team and hang back he didn't do that and that is what he was asked to do. He was also sold because of his attitude which must highlight that the club didn't think he was working and look at his success at Barcelona. And how many times this season has Vermaelan played left back? And we've even had sagna at centre back I agree not as many as last season but still plenty of defensive injuries

3.) I think the "Hollywood passes" contributed to a lot of points we earned and if I remember correctly stopped us having to replay Leeds. Fair enough he did venture forward a lot we sold cesc and nasri two of our best players the season before yes we got arteta but he did not cover the attacking threat we were without. If not for songs "Hollywood passes" were would we have finished.
MgM

4.) I think the truth is somewhere in the middle, he wasn't that bad nor was he that good.

5.) To be fair comparing stats of key passes and successful through balls for Song, a CDM is a little bit pointless. Watching him play, you could see how is physical presence made a difference on the pitch. Also another point about reckless challenges, Arteta makes just as many fouls, if not more. If his attitude was poor, as in as bad as Barton or Bendtner fair enough. But I fail to see how turning up to training late warrants a transfer away from the club. Especially at a youngish age. With Wilshere and Santi we would have as good a midfield as any other PL team.

Wenger really failed on that one.

Detroit Gooner

6.) Rvp last season 21% conversion and 1. 11 for dribbles yea let's sell all the players. Stats do not tell the full story everyone wanted him to stay but when you start putting the stats down they don't look good. So to slate song on a few stats is ridiculous. If Tommy v runs out of defence at weekend and scores the winner will you be on here saying he's worst then song because he plays in defence and should not have scored.

7.) I'm a fan of Song and obviously Barca were too if they paid £16 mil for him so its fair to say he's not a bad player. Whether we were right to get rid of him is a different matter.

We have no way of really knowing how Wenger wanted him to play. If Wenger asked Song to be defensive (those are the rumours but at the same time Wenger has also said the time of def midfielders is over so its 50-50) then propbably right to get rid, if not then he was just playing box-box style and good on him for trying to fill the boots left by Cesc and Nasri (atleast he tried).

A still think him and a proper def midfielder would have been a very solid base to the midfield.

Also how can Gooners be happy we sold him when we never replaced him. It in no way strengthened our squad.

8.) Last season we had no Santi, we had no Jack. Our midfield was completely out of ideas, because Ramsey was not prepared to fill Cesc's gap. That is why Song was playing more offense last year. And he was pretty successful, when Arteta was besides him. Of course that ruined part of his defence game, but nonetheless he was all over the pitch doing almost everything. And he earned us many points. Look even RVP struggle without him. Many of you say that he had no discipline, but I am pretty sure that Song's attacking play was Wenger's instruction.

Before RVP left last summer, I claimed we were only 2 signings aaway from challenging for the title, and many gooners agreed. Wee made those two signings (Cazorla and Giroud), but the little boy inside of that dutch **** meant last summer was a case of one step forward and 2 steps back, as was the summer before that, and generally since David Dein and Titi left. This summer however there is no 1 player you can take from our side that will make us lose or draw matches we shouldn't, which is why I think we need 4ss signings to turn our squad into potential title winners:
1) An solid, experienced GK who can almost mentor Szczesny.
Ex: Begovic, Valdes, Cesar
2) An young, athletic and beastly CB who can boss any attackers on their day
Ex: Kouyate, Dragovic, Richards
3) A destroyer at DM. Needs to be Vieira-esque: physically huge and comfortable on the ball, and cover for the sometimes more attacking Wilshere, Cazorla, Rambo and Rosicky
Ex:Wanyama, Capoue, Diamé
4)A world class ST, and different to Giroud: quick but technically brilliant, so he can add a different dimension up top. Ideally able to play behind a ST in the 3 if needed.
Ex:Jovetic, Lewandowski, Higuain

I think if we can sign four players in these moulds then, provided wwe don't sell key players such as Wilshere or Cazorla then there is no doubt we can be the Arsenal of old again.

1.) Good post
agree completely.

Nick.

2.) Pretty much 100% agree. I actually think our CBs of Verm, Kos and Mert are ok but if better is available or cheap backup then go for it but money might be better spent on a really good winger if available.

3.) You say Cazorla and Giroud, I think almost everyone thought that Podolski would replace RVP but due to an injury and Wenger's unwillingness to play him upfront that hasn't happened!
