I'm personally sick of hearing we should sign a dm just for cover because Coquelin has earned to be a starter next season. He hasn't. He has earned a place in the squad but you have to earn the starting spot every day. He played really well for us and I don't want to take anything away from his performances. But every player is bound to have dips in form and injuries (and possibly suspensions) during a season.

Let's sign a dm. The best we can get. We should be aiming no lower. Do you guys think we're there yet? I don't think we are and we're not going to be if we don't push the club forward by signing players who improve squad.

Want to grant Coquelin an automatic starting spot? Sign Capoue. He's probably available. Or give Flamini a new long-term contract. Want to challenge for the title and possibly even for the Champions league? Sign Carvalho or whoever is the best option.

Always go for the players who would improve us and never sign "squad players".

On what grounds are you basing the theory Carvalho would do better in the premier league and Arsenal team than Le Coq?
Under 21 tournament? Portuguese league? Transfer fee?
What premier league DM was better than Le Coq in 2015?
Proven v potential
We should be so lucky that Le Coq is our biggest weakness and in most need of upgrading .
Maybe we try for De Gea to up grade Cech? Or Ranaldo to replace Sanchez?
Obviously there's no upgrade for Mertesacker out there anywhere that would be silly :-)

it's simple maths really, 50+ games a season. Coq 25+ other bloke 25+ everyones happy and we'll have genuine strength in depth

You can say that about everyone. Sanchez is good but we should be looking to get the best possible LW and, even though he's been amazing, he hasn't earned his place in the team long term because you have to fight for it every day.

Cover is not a bad thing, it's is integral to a team because all players can get injured. Should we sign squad players? No. We want atleast two players fighting for every position but, I believe, if that player was for example Carvalho, Coquelin may still earn to keep his place in the starting team as we don't know Carvalho will necessarily be an 'improvement'. As long as Coquelin is doing his job tremendously, that cannot be a bad thing but we need someone to keep pushing him to perform and he needs to be of great quality so that he can do the job if Coq isn't - not a squad player. If a genuine improvement is found and Coq can't prove he is a better player, he will get replaced.

Gunner62 have I said Carvalho is better than Coquelin? I think I was quite clear when I said "you have to earn the starting spot every day". That works for every player. You are talking about replacing current (good) players while I simply see a vacant spot (or one occupied by Flamini and Arteta) to be filled. We might as well fill it with quality. I haven't even said we should sign specifically Carvalho. And I certainly haven't said anything regarding the other positions. I think you missed my point a bit.

Any player you sign should potentially be better than what you have, or don't bother. If you want to move forward.

As an outsider I can see both sides of the argument and agree a little with both. You do need to be ruthless to win titles tho.

Personally I think Carvalho would be good for you because although he's already making a name for himself he's not too big a name to leave on the bench from time to time Imo. I would start le Coq for the first few games (out of respect) then tell them both to fight it out from there. Another bonus is that he can cover the CB position which has been an issue in the past.

The trouble is if you don't get him or someone similar and le Coq gets injured or hits poor form, you're back to square one. Buying a player you think is clearly no. 2 to le Coq is not a particularly strong move either. It is a toughy though I admit.

Cech, Carvalho and Benzema would be heading to North London if I was in Wengers shoes!

We defo need to address that area good competition for le coq I think is the best way to word it. I would like krychowiak myself. Yeah HB. Benzema would be banging. I'm glad wenger is looking at a LB aswell! I think that would really put us in with a massive shout

your kidding yourself if you think coq is anywhere near as good as carvalho, carvalho is a beast and in few years time will walk into any team he wants, barca or Madrid. If you don't sign him now and play him from day one then you will regret it big time.
