Its international time and again we talk about lack of English talent playing PL football so to in courage teams to back young English players what do you think of this!

Over the season any side that starts a game with 5 or more English players for 35 of 38 games receive a 5 point bonus. It would make clubs think is this young overseas player really that much better from another local lad or is fielding 7 - 11 non nationals worth more than 5 points a season. I think teams who expect a reputation battle would be swayed towards backing English tallent.

Its wouldn't be compulsory but might make teams at least want to produce players for the national game?

Thoughts? And Its just an Idea, go easy on me :-)

Personally I think the whole debate is xenophobic.

I am English and proud, but Arsenal comes first for me. I see no reason for us or any team to pander to the national team.

The real problem is that money in football is not distributed fairly enough. More money from the PL needs to filter down to grass roots football. Then maybe we'd see young players coming through.

Culture is also an issue. There is too much of an insistence on physicality at a young age. Skilful players often get let go by clubs because they haven't reached a physical level. If you look at Spain and Germany this attitude is completely the other way round.

Totally agree with MHC Robson had a terrific work rate and was a hero where hoddle had only skill and was considered a luxury and where young talent is concerned in this country its still the same.
Every time the world cup comes round and England are not there or do badly we look for answers so points make prizes and there's no bigger prize than premier league survival for 15 or so teams each year and 5 points could be the difference

3.) 11 Oct 2013
The 5 points for fielding English players is a mental idea I'm sorry. It just can't work.

4.) 11 Oct 2013
Fair play MHC it was just an idea mate and maybe not the greatest one ever but I just feel the more people the question is open to the more likely we are to find the right answer as the fa haven't managed it on thier own all these years

My one would be this -

All PL teams pays a proportion of its revenue every year to the FA to be directly invested into grass roots football. The money goes into a pot to set up more clubs and train more coaches etc etc. {Ed007's Note - In my opinion it is more to do with the fact English clubs place too much emphasis on physical training rather than football coaching. In the UK you are seen as an athlete first and footballer second. This leads to British players being technically inferior to others.
Look at Ozil as an example, I think he is a fantastic player, one of the best in his position but if he had been English he would have been made to bulk up and become a MF terrier harassing opposition players and breaking up play. There are plenty of coaches out there but it is what they are coaching the kids that is the problem. Coach them in the technical side of the game, allow them flourish and express themselves on the park and most importantly allow kids to enjoy playing at that age. The majority of kids at 13/14 shouldn't need much fitness training, general footballing training and playing matches should be enough to keep them fit, plus they have P.E. at school.
Some of the coaches at local youth games are appalling, they think they are Mourinho the way they carry-on. Sorry for the rant.}

Kids need to enjoy the training they get or they loose interest and drift away that's a fact. Everything they do should include a ball and only train once or twice a week max and play at weekends especially before their 14 at which age you have a far better idea of what needs to be added to their game and which ones have a real chance.
Then and only then should it be stepped up and more serious. But we still need an incentive to clubs in this country to back English talent ahead of any other, and the same for other countries too they should be doing all they can for their young players to come through

7.) 11 Oct 2013
I agree with all that has been said above but also the problem is the price. For example, a good young English player like wilfred zaha was bought by Manchester United for £13m but, you could buy a "foreign" wilfred zaha who is probably more experienced and possibly technically better for £7m. Young english players are too expensive.
If you were manager of a team you have just justify your outgoings to the chairman and board. why pay £13m when you can pay £7m?

No ed07 don't ever feel the need to apologise for a rant that is all true, as I am irish myself I can't help but wonder why england do so poorly when it comes to tournaments, with football as the first and foremost sport in england and an 80 million population and the best league in the world, why does it go so wrong?

In ireland football comes in at tied 3rd in the rank of importance when it comes to sport with rugby. Ahead of it we have galeic football and hurling, some of the players that play either if they played football I think we would have an amazing overachiving team for the size of the island, in short really I know why we are not competetive but can't understand with the players that england have, are not.

D G you spot on mate, a few years back we wanted to by Darren Eaddie from Norwich but they wanted 7 million for him so we bought Overmars instead for the same price. One was a punt the other a total certainty,
Some how we need to make buying English good value, maybe bigger clubs being given an option of try before you buy on English players with one year loan and fee set by league after that year that's binding. Not perfect but could be worked on by better people than me I'm sure

10.) 11 Oct 2013
No need to apologise for a rant Ed! But correct me if I'm wrong isn't that exactly the point I made in my first post ;) {Ed007's Note - Ooopsss!!! So you did lol, sorry buddy. Although I must say that I feel I made my point more eloquently and I expanded on your poxy little scribble :)

11.) 11 Oct 2013
G62, you are correct and darren eadie was nowhere near as good as marc overmars.
I agree with you about the "try before you buy" on English players although i'm sure there will be people getting on their high horse and saying its not politically correct or that foreign players are being alienated.
unfortunately, its not just about players though. It would be interesting to know how many English managers there are in the league. i'm going to have a rough guess and say about 60% (im sure there are a few "tech heads" on here who can give us the correct amount), but, either way I think it is way too low.

Its a tricky situation DG and what we all want is out mangers and players to be as good as any others not become more insular.

What ever we do it has to be produced by free will not laws and rules, that's why we need an incentive of some sort
