What a quality team the French have been!

They've come a long way in two years mate, at euro 2016 they looked good at times but something wasn't quite right but now who knows what they might achieve if they don't implode off the pitch as they have in the past.

Thing is there a young team like England and look at them compared to us.

Very true Stephen we are way behind but we sneaked our of France 2 years ago with our heads down in embarrassment and this time we walked out of Russia having done better than expected.
Our problem is not enough English players play in our domestic league on merit but because the rules dictate 8 must be home grown from 25 man squad.
The French league is full of French players and the same in Germany Italy Spain where only the top teams have lots of players from other countries.
We need to find a way of getting our under 17 19 20 champions playing premier league football rather than under 23 level.

England flattered to deceive with one of the weakest England teams I can recall and not a single world class player in sight.
The homegrown quota hasn't really worked and our club is a prime example, without a single English player in our strongest starting eleven. We have signed 5 players this window and not a single English player amongst them.
Not only do we have a dearth of playing talent, we also have no top managers or coaches.

Maybe it should be a rulebyou have to have at least 4 to 5 English players in the starting 11 might get a few new talents coming through.

I think there has to be an incentive to play English players but not a rule that you have to.
Forcing English players on top teams has just made the best English players over valued but not better players. Klinsmann called it rolling out the red carpet for English players and obviously it's not had the desired effect.
The problem is money, every man and his dog bar the really top players want to play in England because of the wages so all clubs have players from all over the world even the lower leagues and this is a problem most other countries don't have.
I think the place to start is not to worry to much about the big clubs but find a way of getting the majority of premier league clubs and certainly championship and below to prefer buy or better still bring through English players but not forcing it on them.
Just an idea, but maybe a Europa league place for the premier league club that uses the most English players in a season and an automatic play off place for the football league clubs that do the same.
Obviously if two teams both play a full 11 English players then it would revert back to the highest points.
I don't think it matters too much if our current under 17 19 20 champions aren't playing for United city Liverpool or Arsenal but it does matter that they get to play if we want to have players to chose from in the future.

Just 4 weeks from today before life under Dick and co kicks off and we will get some answers as to what he has in mind for us, exciting to say the least.
Just realised that doesn't give the players involved in the world cup later stages much chance of making the start of the season.
Isn't it a fifa rule they have to be given a month off between their world cup ending and reporting for preseason training with their clubs?
Needing 2 or 3 weeks to get fit again after their holiday it will mean some players like Hazard KDB Lukaku Pogba Kante won't play until September.
No Stones Walker KDB Kompany to face us on opening day then :-)

Which was why I made comment last week about the Spuds rejoicing that they still had 9 players at the World Cup.

With City 1st and Chelsea our 3rd game in, every little helps. šŸ˜‚

To be honest I want to see how we fair against everyoneā€™s best otherwise weā€™ll flatter to deceive, much like England just have.

I'd take a 9pts flattering over a 0 points battering any day of the week mate :-)
Sometimes this things go for you sometimes against you it's maximising the advantage while you've got and limiting the damage when you don't have it that matters come game 38.

Spurs would have to start the season without Lloris, Rose, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertongen, Dembele, Alli, Dier and Kane. Add the fact that Eriksen, Sanchez and Son will not follow the preseason and barely make it back in time. it might look tricky to get a good starting XI the first rounds.

City must manage without Walker, Stones, Kompany, Mendy, KDB, Sterling, and Delph. With Ederson, Otamendi, Danilo, Fernandihno, D. Silva, B. Silva, Aguero and Jesus barely making it back. This might be an very interesting start of the season.

Good to see news faces coming in at last. But whose leaving. Thereā€™s nothing about interst in any one.

Aaron is the only one I can see having good options available to him from a champions league team.
Danny will have to drop down to a team that finished below us if he choses to leave and the same for Iwobi.
Opsina might get a decent move somewhere as a number 2 keeper but if he wants first team football he will need to drop down several levels to achieve that, surely he won't see our his contract as a number 3 with us?
Mustafi will need to move abroad to get a chance of a fairly high profile club but if we want to recoup 50% + of our 34 million from him moving his choices will be very very limited.

Outs
Ramsey and/ or Welbeck if they don't sign new deals.
2 of our 5 keepers.

Other possibilities
Campbell. Perez, Jenkinson, Asano and Akpom

Loans
Young players to get first team playing experience.

We have a very full squad, so departures are essential.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2018 11:08:37
Ramsey and Welbeck would be so difficult to replace, I really hope it's just protracted negotiations for new deals and not them looking to leave.

Selling Mustafi at a Ā£18m loss and starting the season against City and Chelsea with Sokratis and Chambers as our only senior CB options to me sounds like very, very irresponsible management.

I feel Jenkinson and Akpom, despite being English, need to move on, and if they don't go this summer I'd be surprised if they extend their contracts at any point, it makes little sense for their careers or the club.

Campbell and Ospina sound disgruntled (fairly, as things stands they'd be unlikely to feature even in cup games for us this season) so it would make sense to move them on. I think similarly of Lucas Perez, but he seems to want to stay at the club now Emery is there.

Asano has already joined Hannover on a season-long loan so I think he's unlikely to leave the club again this summer but you never know.

Having watched yesterday's macth, I couldn't quite work out the formation, but it clearly worked and the absence of gaps that were apparent in the formations of recent seasons was noticeable, particularly in front of the fullbacks. I would appreciate it if fellow gooners could explain the formation used yesterday to me.
There was a freedom to the way the team played, despite more disciplined roles. I noticed that youngsters such as Nelson and Reine-Adelaide looked far more assured and confident under Emery. Nelson in particular looked very lively, back to the way he played when he first came through. Two youngsters that impressed me were Osei-Tutu and Smith Rowe, both look to have promising futures, as did Guendouzi, who looks an accomplished young player. I appreciate it is tricky to being young players through at a top PL club, but we seem to have some very talented youngsters,

I think if we are playing Borehamwood then the minimum we should expect is ā€˜freedomā€™. Canā€™t exactly judge much on a pre season friendly like this. Perhaps against better quality opposition.

Agree1 Disagree3

15 Jul 2018 08:04:29
Sky walker - of course it is easier to play freely in a friendly against low level opposition. However, under the previous management the players seemed restrained and played without freedom. The freedom to express themselves as they wished, in terms of shooting, tackling and expressing themselves.

It was definitely a flat back four with a DM, Chambers played that role with Ramsey the deeper mid next to him 2nd half.

So it kind of looked 4-2-3-1 with Lacazette up top first half and Nketiah 2nd half. Aubameyang scored his first coming off the left.

Perez was working hard pressing too, as they all where, not sure about his shorts though. šŸ˜‚

Apparently they went straight back to Conley for another training session after the game.

Canā€™t remember us scoring so freely against them for a few years. So somethingā€™s changed for the better.

15 Jul 2018 10:25:41
And youā€™ll be the first ones complaining if we arenā€™t doing this against a better standard of opponent. Give them a chance to find their way before judging against such a side. Realism is required for this season, regardless of the improvements made thus far.

Totally agree skywalker mate, a game against Borehamwood is a training session no more no less.
It's ridiculous time draw any conclusions about the future from a game like this or any friendly I it's simply a part of preseason getting fit programme.
How many teams have a great preseason followed by an awful campaign in the league and vice versa, it's just a case of people being desperate for the new season and life under Dick to start getting carried away in my opinion.
We will have to wait for the city game for our first real glimpse of our fresh start, not long now :-)

Totally agree Skywalker but it was good to see the team press regardless of the opposition and for players like Aubameyang and Lacazette to score.

We have much better tests heading our way against PSG, Atletico and Seville but yesterday was mostly about fitness along with learning a new way of playing.
