Interesting read concerning our limited budget, self funding model, fear of making a transfer mistake which stopped us signing big players because we couldn't make a 20m mistake while Chelsea could, having to sell RVP as in final year and thinking we had a great deal lined up with selling Sanchez a year earlier with a great player coming in. Puts an interesting spin on what it's like and how small misalignments ruin deals.

Funny how we slag the club off for selling RVP with a year to go because they could agree a deal but then slag them off for not selling Rambo or Sanchez a year earlier.

Shows they were clearly managing contracts but it doesn't always work out and sometimes the best deal is to the person you don't want to sell to 😂😂

Can't please everyone but clearly operating to different rule book compared to Utd, Chelsea or City which makes every decision harder and while you over analyse the situation - others move in and circumstances change.

Funny old world but you look at things differently as you get a better insight afterwards.

Excellent post SY4. It often amuses me how the average fan believes transfer deals are simple. They are clearly not.

Excellent post SY, everything looks simple from the outside looking in.
I watched snooker on TV and thought how difficult can it be? Then I picked up a cue ;-)

I also find this information interesting. Because it tells me that our problem the last years is not the lacking ambition of our ownership, but the incompetence and poor decision making of the people who are responsible for recruitments and transfers. Our net spending the last 5 years are significant higher then Liverpool and Tottenham. We seem to have problems in getting players that we can enjoy and move on again for serious money. Hopefully we can enjoy Torreira, Guendouzi, Martinelli and some others for some good seasons now and pass them on for a good profit. So that we could be more robust in the transfer market.

I agree Nor mate, we have to accept the reality of there will always be bigger fish than us looking to take any top class players we bring on, rather be precious about them we would be far better accepting how things work and using the funds generated to fund our own improvement.
Pea and Lacasette are extremely valuable players to us but if anyone anywhere were to offer 100 million ( I know no one will ) we should snatch they're hand off without thinking twice.
All clubs have to sell top players at some point even United had to let Ronaldo go eventually.
