Hi Eds, do you know anything about the Gabriel Martinelli transfer? Possible Danny Welbeck replacement?

JackGooner

{Ed002's Note - He is a child - he is not for the first team.}

1.) 25 Apr 2019 10:21:46
It will be interesting to see if we offer Welbeck a new deal, as he is decent cover along the frontline and there will be no transfer fee involved.

2.) 27 Apr 2019 08:21:14
Our wage bill is a problem for us so I don't see Danny getting a new deal, great lad but we are not in a position to have players on the wage bill who are very seldom available to play.

14 Jul 2015 20:01:06
Eds any idea what the long term plan is regarding Jenkinson? Is the new contract simply just to maintain market value or do they see a space for him in future squads.

JackGooner

{Ed001's Note - he wants to stay and the club would like to give him more time to develop. They will accept offers above a certain price and let him decide whether to stay or go, but he is not being pushed out of the door.}

1.) 15 Jul 2015 15:27:25
Thank you for your reply ED001, I think as a fan of the club all Arsenal supporters would love to see him succeed at the club but it's difficult to see.

2.) 17 Jul 2015 14:50:10
Sadly, you are absolute correct.

09 Jun 2015 19:41:53
Jackson Martinez's agent claims that his release clause has been matched by an unspecified club and that a deal could be reached sometime this week.

Looking through the search function, in May Ed002 said that "W/F: Dybala has been of sustained interest but he will not be moving to Arsenal. Arsenal will possibly turn to Jackson Martinez, ".

Is the situation still the same or is interest elsewhere?

JackGooner

1.) 10 Jun 2015 13:25:55
Boom! Search function reference FTW!

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

20 May 2015 15:29:41
Bartra reportedly available for £7.1m due to playing less than 60% of Barcelona's games.

Eds do you have any idea whether this is true or not and if so would you expect Arsenal to be among the interested clubs.

JackGooner

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal has shown no interest in him.}

1.) 20 May 2015 22:34:59
Is that really such a clause in players contracts?

{Ed001's Note - some players do have clauses such as that, though they are difficult to enforce in England, so it doesn't tend to happen here.}

2.) 21 May 2015 07:59:16
Thanks ed! Never knew that one. Sounds a strange one. Must be a lot of stipulations in it with injuries and form and such. Sounds a stupid clause to me

{Ed001's Note - it depends on the player, but usually it would be a when fit to play they have to play X amount of times. It is usually when a smaller club is picking up an older player, with a big rep, who is not sure which team to join. There are a few younger players in Spanish football that have similar sorts of clauses, such as Odegaard having a clause that he trains with the first team a number of times each week. That led to a falling out with the club, when he refused to turn up for training with Castilla and Zidane dropped him as a result. It does seem to have been settled now.}

03 Apr 2015 15:40:24
A few reports going round that Arsenal have signed a 16 year old from Velez Sarsfield called Maxi Romero.

Obviously not meant for the first team at the moment. But does anyone know anything about him? Position etc?

JackGooner

1.) 03 Apr 2015 16:43:26
He's a very prolific striker.

We have representatives talking to him.

Apparently, we 'will' sign him but will leave him to develop at his parent club for another 2 years on 'loan'.

2.) 04 Apr 2015 19:14:48
*cough* Work permit issues *cough*

3.) 05 Apr 2015 11:41:18
Hope he is not like the Austin Maxi my dad had when we were growing up. Load of old tosh....

So several of the top prem teams have split their squad in two and played 11-11.

If arsenal were to do this what would be the fairest two line ups?

I would go with:

Auba
Martinelli Willock Pepe
Torreira ceballos
Tierney Mari Papa Ainsley
Martinez

Vs

Laca
Saka ozil Nelson
Xhaka Guendouzi
Kolasinac luiz holding Bellerin
Leno

Thoughts?

JackGooner

1.) 07 Jun 2020 15:02:08
1st team would win.
Swap Nelson and Pepe for a fairer game.

2.) 08 Jun 2020 17:11:21
I would say that's a fair match, I would not mind watching that Jack.

03 Jul 2019 22:03:38
Man City and Spuds both breaking club transfer records today while we're running around like headless chickens. Mood among the fans is fragile at best at the moment, feel like the club need to show us something other than a reto kit release to get fans back on board.

JackGooner

1.) 03 Jul 2019 22:43:37
What you mean spend what we simply don't have and totally ignore and refuse to play by uafa FFP rules Jack? Sounds resealable mate :-)

2.) 04 Jul 2019 04:19:03
By my math (which isn’t always good) , we spend £52M annually on lousy salaries. Let’s get that under control.

3.) 04 Jul 2019 08:28:13
That's got to be the key to turning the club round Alex and the place where we start.
Emery doesn't want Mesut and he's 18 million a year, we've no chance of selling him because of his wages but we could probably give him away if we agreed to pay half his wages also saving us 9 million a year which would allow us to pay 7 new players young up and coming players 25k a week some of which if we buy well might have a resale value in the future.
I like Mesut but he's wasting his career at Arsenal and we are wasting a huge chunk of our salary budget on a player our manager doesn't want.
To carry on as we are just seems crazy so cutting our losses looks the sensible option.

{Ed002's Note - It really doesn't work like that. Maybe it would be best to ignore the finances.}

4.) 04 Jul 2019 09:22:54
I think we have more than 45 a club like arsenal didn’t just turn over that in a year.

5.) 04 Jul 2019 11:39:24
G62- perhaps my original post didn't properly communicate what I'd like to see from the club so let me try to elaborate a little. Like most fans, I have a very limited understanding of club finances and FFP however I can appreciate that right now Arsenal as a club are not in a financial position to compete with the top clubs for signings such as the ones made yesterday by City and Spuds. What I meant when calling for the club to show us something didn't necessarily refer to a big name signing. I'm sure many fans myself included would be more than happy to see the club invest in youth and give opportunities to our young academy players, just seeing a sign of a long term vision rather than the unrealistic and embarrassing bids we have seen so far for Zaha and Tierney. I hope this explanation makes my original post a little more 'resealable' to you mate ;-)

6.) 04 Jul 2019 13:34:50
Yes Jack that sounds much more resealable to me mate :-)
Like you say mate none of us really know what's going on and although we all like to share opinions and views ultimately none of us will know anything for sure until either players arrive or the window closeness, I think that's a resealable way of looking at thongs:-)

27 May 2019 18:45:33
Hi Eds,
I’ve seen a few recent posts with people discussing which of our current crop of young players they’d like to see in and around the first team next season. I was wondering if you could offer any insight into how the club currently regard players such as Bielik and Nelson and what there plans are for next season?

JackGooner

{Ed002's Note - I am afraid that I can't. The person I would have asked has left the club and taken up a role elsewhere.}

1.) 28 May 2019 07:21:35
It is extremely difficult, in the PL, to bridge the gap between being a promising teenager and being able to compete physically in the PL, which is arguably the toughest league in Europe.
I envisage Nelson being integrated into the first team squad next season and would like to see if any of the others are up to the task during the summer. Nketiah, Smith-Rowe, Medley, Willock, John-Jules, Amaechi and Saka have great potential.
All credit to Mertesacker and Freddie who are doing a fine job with the young players.

12 May 2019 23:00:46
Gunners, how big of an offer from Barcelona do you think it would take for us to part with Lacazette this summer?

Obviously would hate to see him leave as he has been one of best and most improved players this season but with our current financial situation and the rebuilding job on our hands every player has their price.

For me, while I understand the argument that in order to be a top club we have to stop losing top players, I think we have to be realistic and seriously consider anything over £65/ 70m as arguably we'd be better of reinvesting in other areas of the team. Interested to here others thoughts.

JackGooner

1.) 13 May 2019 06:25:27
Extremely worrying as he will be extremely difficult to replace. However, our policy of not allowing contracts to run down will be severely tested.
A top forward such as Lacazette at only 27 years of age must be worth £100m in today’s crazy market.

2.) 13 May 2019 08:18:07
It's a catch 22 situation because if Lacasette wants out we have little choice but to cash in at the highest possible price we can get but without Lacasette and Pea this season where would we be?
We need money to reinvest and if Lacasette or Pea go it's not as simple as trying to replace like for like, we need to replace and strengthen elsewhere also with any big fee we get.
Unfortunately it's not even as simple as just spending becuase with or without Lacasette we have to get much much more out of what we have already for any spending to make any significant difference.
We can't sign 22 new improved players, 3 or 4 would be a fantastic summer but in order for them to have the desired effect there is no escaping we need to get a lot more from our existing squad than what we've got from them last season or from the previous 10 seasons too.

3.) 13 May 2019 08:48:09
Would send out all the wrong signals. Selling one of the few players who actually puts a shift in every game.

I am sure Abua would want to leave also if he was sold.

Lacca and Auba should be kept and the team built around them.

4.) 13 May 2019 09:05:12
I agree Spanner but if they wanted out then we'd be fools to keep them against their wishes rather than take the highest possible price and reinvest it, the last things we need is for their form and value to drop and then just run down their contracts.
If push comes to shove we need to do things better than we have in the past if the future is to be better.

5.) 13 May 2019 09:50:37
Need to keep them the two up top have been our most consistent performers, just sends out the wrong signal if we sell now when we need to strengthen. A few key good signings at the back and in midfield will make a big difference and get us closer to to the top 2. We can score goals no issues 72 Scored so we just need to re-balance the sqaud better to shore up defensivly.

6.) 13 May 2019 15:31:43
Sell if he wants to leave, but if we let it get to the stage where players don't want to be at Arsenal when a bid comes in, we've failed already. What I mean is this: the club needs to focus on building a mission where the plan is clear and every player feels that they will play a part.

Hate to say it but look at Spurs or Liverpool - they've retained players like Kane, Eriksen, Salah, etc. because of good management and a clear vision, not by retaining them against their will.

7.) 13 May 2019 17:52:53
Totally agree with that Wire mate, you can buy a players signature but not their heart and if the heart isn't in it what's the point?
Pogba is a great example as is Sanchez with us, Alexis was fantastic for us for 3 seasons but he lost heart at Arsenal and we lost 60 million for the pleasure of half a seasons half hearted service.
If a player is performing and 100% and wants to be with why sell him unless it's at an offer no one could refuse but once a player has had his head turned or has simply lost heart with his current club it's foolish to retain them but not their passion.
People slate Sanchez but for 3 seasons he consistently gave more than plenty of others have ever ganlve even occasionally.

8.) 14 May 2019 01:29:12
If we mean business next season we should keep our best players and build around them, strength where is needed, get in a best of a CB and a decent CM along with a winger and we have a good core for next season.
Also winning the EL will be massive in keeping our best players as they will finish the season on a high and have some optimism for next season.

08 Nov 2018 00:30:29
Gunners, would you rather qualify for next years champions league and City win the league unbeaten OR another year in the Europa league but the invincibles stay a one off?

JackGooner

1.) 08 Nov 2018 06:39:27
EL as I respect the Invincibles and can’t stand the clubs who bought success - Chelsea and $hity.

2.) 08 Nov 2018 07:37:24
Champions league football for me every time, the invincibles were for me the best ever team no matter what city or anyone else does in the future simply because I'm an Arsenal fan and I enjoyed that period so much on a personal level
If City Liverpool or Chelsea can go the rest of this season unbeaten good luck to them, what we did was unbelievable at the time and we loved every minute of it, that's what's important.
Spurs thought back in 1962 no other team would ever do the league fa cup double again but 10 years later we did it and several clubs have done it since, I'm not precious about being the only club to go a whole season unbeaten because that is ancient history now in football terms but I'm precious about the memories of how brilliant we were and how much we enjoyed it.
We need to think of the future rather than turn into Spurs fans living off the ancient past which hardly any of them can remember, it's worth baring in mind no teenage Arsenal fans can remember the invincibles actually playing at the time or have any memory of us as premier league champions or even being competitive in the title race even, we should cherish the memories but look to the future because for all the lovely memories it's the future that's important now.

Just to get everyone's brain ticking over this morning, without using Google
Which member of the Arsenal invincibles went on to become a double invincible with another club in another country?

3.) 08 Nov 2018 12:12:05
Kolo Toure? Did he also do it at Celtic?

4.) 08 Nov 2018 13:20:09
I see I wasn’t the only one who watched Question of Sport.

5.) 08 Nov 2018 14:23:24
Well done FM mate spot on, wow what an achievement! Some career Kolo had especially if you add in his City medals too plus he came so close at Liverpool in 2014 to adding to his hual.

6.) 08 Nov 2018 16:15:00
Spot on Banbury mate:-) , you know allll my secrets :-)

French newspaper reporting that he will be signed and loaned back for the next season. Signing seems to match the profile but the loaning back makes little to no sense to me unless the club are seriously considering either Chambers/ Mavropanos as first team option (s) .

Personally I’m not a massive fan of Mustafi but I feel that with Kos being out indefinitely with an injury which has been ongoing for several seasons now it would be a brave move for the new manager to let our only current/ fit/ established CB leave this summer.

I remember Wenger saying in an interview the biggest mistake he made as Arsenal manager was rushing Pires back from a long term injury. Having said that I doubt he'd make the same mistake with Theo, doubt we'll see him play before December.

{Ed025's Note - thats my opinion as well jack, it will obviously be reviewed on a week to week basis, but if he broke down again it could and his career mate..

62- completely agree about Nelson looking out of his depth. Everytime I’ve seen him running with the ballthis season he looks like he’s running on banana peels, hope he finds his feet soon because he’s always looked like a real talent but at this rate he’s fallen below martinelli and Saka in the pecking order.

Holding's performance tonight was worrying but understandable given his recent injury problems. Explains why he hasn't been in the team of late, just hope he can rediscover his form over the next few months as he has the potential to be a great player for us!

Got to say I don’t think it’s fair to right Pepe off just yet. He’s clearly very raw and has so far struggled to settle into the Prem, but looking at this track record at City I have confidence that Arteta can be the man to get the best out of him. Also worth noting that in the last 3 games we have won Utd, West Ham and Vitoria Pepe has been directly involved in a good proportion of the goals we have scored. Maybe it’s just the win over United in the last game, but I’m feeling very optimistic at the moment and I’m really excited to see how Pepe does for the rest of the year under Arteta’s tutorage!

For me, IF (key word if) this were to happen the way we as fans would have to look at it would be largely dependent on the fee received and how the money is redistributed within the squad. PEA is a great striker and one of our best players without a doubt. But, he is now 30 meaning his value is only going to decrease from here and we do already have Lacazette in the squad. Given most modern teams only play with one up top, if we were to get 70/ 80 million for PEA and get in players who can fit better into Emery's system it wouldn't be the worst bit of business. Having said this, I do completely understand the whole "don't sell your best players to your rival's" argument, but I'm just trying to look at the situation a little bit more pragmatically.
