I wonder what the clubs thoughts are on Onana? It seems like a homerun to most people, cheap, quality and he's got years left in the tank. There must be something quite wrong with him if nobody is taking a punt at below the 10 million quoted.

Akie

{Ed002's Note - Andre Onana (G) Banned to November. Inter and Lyon very keen, Arsenal see him as an option.}

1.) 13 Aug 2021 11:53:03
I wonder if the AFCON plays a part in Arsenal's decision?

14 Jul 2020 21:24:08
Ornstein the oracle has said that AMN has decided that he must leave Arsenal for game time, I wonder how much we could get for him this summer window? I think we should get in touch with Everton again after they took Iwobi off our hands 😂

In all seriousness, he has looked a good player at times and it would be a shame to see him flourish elsewhere, however, if the money is too good to turn down given our current situation, its a good use of our youth system, and I will wish him all the best!

Ormstien unfortunately isn't as reliable as he was before joining the Atlantic, he's joined the must come up with stories jurno's apposed to having the freedom he enjoyed to only report what he knew in his old job.

2.) 16 Jul 2020 04:27:45
What makes you say so G62?

3.) 16 Jul 2020 09:08:30
Last summer wire mate, he talked more than ever but missed out on Arsenal's surprise spending spree and was as shocked as anyone else by Pepe. In his old job he was a sports reporter who definitely had good connections at Arsenal but now he has to come up with stories rather than simply report on actual events as he knows them to be.
It's only natural if your asked to seriously increase the volume of stories you produce it's going to be at the cost of quality.

Looks like Saka's deal is done and he's staying! And Arteta has said the club is wanting to keep Balogun which is huge news if true! A good morning for once.

Akie

1.) 01 Jul 2020 10:06:03
That the club wanted to keep Balogun was never in doubt, it was whether he was willing to stay. Loved the Saka news.

Eds, is the fractious situation between Arsenal and St Etienne anything to worry about? I wouldn't be surprised if this puts a red flag over our negotiations with other clubs this summer.

{Ed002's Note - I know nothing of it.}

29 Jun 2020 07:51:15
The almighty David Ornstein has said that Arsenal could be set to lose Balogun, are you able to shed any light on this Ed? Always thought he was the greater footballer out of John Jules, Nketiah and himself, would be a shame to lose him so early in his career.

Akie

{Ed002's Note - I know nothing of it.}

Heard a few rumblings about AMN being allowed to leave this summer. It's always a shame when an Arsenal lad doesn't make the grade at the club, but it would show our academy doing it's job and making money for the club.

Akie

1.) 16 Jun 2020 14:14:01
Would have liked to have seen the lad have a run in midfield but I must admit I've never been really convinced he was a top 4 player let alone a title challenging player that all big clubs should be looking to have in their squads.
Wish the lad well of he leaves.
To me Martinelli Saka and Rowe Smith have real potential to be top players but Nelson and Wliox like Mainland Niles are a bit short of what's needed sadly.

2.) 16 Jun 2020 15:30:50
Apparently it's not cut and dry, and he'S to be given a run-out in midfield, like he did against Charlton. That he would be sold for saying he didn't want to play out of position, that would be a shame.

3.) 16 Jun 2020 17:05:10
Maitland Niles at least deserves a chance to play in his preferred role. I'll never say he's not good enough to play for Arsenal when I can only judge him playing in positions that he isn't exactly comfortable with. He's played RWB, RB, LB and on the wing both sides since he's broken in to the 1st team. A loyal graduate of the academy to say the least and he needs his time. He's so composed on the ball which is something that at least 2 of our CM's are certainly not!
Nelson has only had a handful of chances and he's a good player for sure. He was a standout in the under 23s and then went on loan to Germany where he also played some brilliant football. I think he'll shine and if we sell him we'll live to regret it. Gnabry only had a handful of chances, went to Germany and now look 🤷🏻‍♂️.

4.) 16 Jun 2020 18:10:59
It's all personal opinion Glen mate and I totally respect yours even though we don't share the same views this time.
Gnarby for me was always in the Martinelli stand out obvious bracket to everyone but those who mattered but for some reason refused to use him.
Even if we were flush with money I think Martinelli and Saka would be in our first team squads while UK not at all sure Wilox Mainland Niles or Nelson would be, but of course My potential to be wrong isn't without grounds :-)

5.) 16 Jun 2020 18:51:04
100% mate. Other people see things and view players in different ways. I can't help but feel sorry for MNiles though which is why I think he should get his shot over Xhaka and if it doesn't work out, he's got time to move on for sure. I don't want to see Arsenal move on young talent to early that's all. Both Martinelli and Saka have come straight in and stamped their authority in the team which is perfect. Now it all comes down to consistency and giving them regular opportunities every week.

6.) 16 Jun 2020 19:33:26
Absolutely mate and Mainland Niles should definitely have been given more of a chance last season and this in his favoured position.
Some players just look right at home in top football immediately and I think Martinelli Saka and Gnarby all looked that way to me, but then again Harry Kane didn't and he struggled to make the Norwich bench the season before his breakthrough at Spurs.

7.) 16 Jun 2020 21:22:53
Interesting points of view fellas.
Iv always thought there was a player there with AMN, but it’s difficult once you’ve made the step into the first team and your rate of progress slows or stagnates after that big step up.

Personally I can’t fault the guy as I think a lot of his issues are down to the man management, or lack thereof, that he has received. I mean Emery used him as a utility player and he knew no matter how he performed that Bellerin of Kolasinac/ Monreal would always come straight back in once fit regardless. This doesn’t help the player if he’s not getting motivation or feedback from the coach.

I think he could have been used a lot more in CM with the lack of mobility in Xhaka, for me Xhaka is inneffective at what he is supposed to be as any type of midfield player. He is not a CDM as he is quite simply bypassed too often and he is cynical to the point of at times barely even making the contact needed to desperately commit a foul.

He can pass a ball square and forward of course, but this is quite often at his leisure with no intent to draw opposition out of position or create an incisive move at the intensity required. and all too frequently when he does pass he does it so deep in our half that he is under no pressure from the opposition team who have already got back into a shape before he casually commits his pass to one of our fullbacks.

Occasionally he will lift the odd pass over a defence to Kolasinac or Saka running from deep but I’d argue what he offers, and has offered, over the last 18 months could have been matched or surpassed by the athleticism and energy of AMNs once he had been given a run of games in the position.

My only criticism of AMNs is that he hasn’t found that resolve needed yet to persevere through his own flaws or inexperience, all too often once he’s made an error the head goes down and the body language drops and he literally slows to jogging pace almost sheepishly accepting he’s lost out, when he has displayed the strength and energy on numerous occasions at RB to get back and make superb interventions that few could have got back to do.

So for me it’s a question of motivation and attitude for the player, someone close to him needs to put the big question to him now as to what it is HE wants and that he’s in control of his own destiny, or I fear ultimately he will look for the easy way out and think his youth combined with a new club will be the answer, but the reality is if he pulls his socks up and just goes out and plays to his full potential full pelt each game there's a player there.

Same goes for Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson. You haven’t made it just because your in and around the first team. You need to push to perform and push harder than everyone else to make the standard they play at your norm. That’s where they differ from Martinelli. From minute one he came in looking to prove a point.

He’s direct and single minded in pursuit of his goals game to game and has no youth or under 23’s reputation to sit back on. He’s hungry and going places, not next season, but now.
Saka is an exciting talent in a fine run of form but by no means the finished article either.

Like I said the other day, it’s time for them to step up as senior footballers and stake their claim, and reading into Ed 002s comments, they’ll all get that chance the next 18 mths.

8.) 16 Jun 2020 23:27:09
I’d like to remind you, that a young AMN had €100m Paul Pogba in his pocket at Old Trafford, kid needs a chance to prove himself in his natural position rather than playing cover for every position apart from CM. I believe there is definitely a player in there, and it’s Arteta’s job to find it. Willock for me could be our major break through over the next 18 months, again a player who needs a good run of games, but again I'm positive there is a player in there too. And then we have two awesome talents in Saka and Martinelli who will both go on to win major trophies, no doubt about that.

9.) 16 Jun 2020 23:40:49
I think had Maitland Niles been given a proper run of games in midfield we would think differently of him. Small sample size but always look back to his man of the match performance against Man U a couple years ago when he bossed the midfield to the point Pogba had to pull him aside afterwards. AMN could've been our box to box midfielder with a proper DLP. I actually think he and Ceballos could form a nice partnership but doubt we'll ever see that. Interesting to see how Arteta has played around with the midfield groups in these friendlies though and how that might shape our team for these last few games.

10.) 17 Jun 2020 07:34:31
It's difficult to say what side of the fence I am on with AMN, I'd hate to see another youngster leave and kick on with another club, (Malen, Jeff, Gnabry, Bennacer) but I think like Shambles said, his motivation isn't there as it should be and that makes so much difference, however, you wouldn't be motivated as much if the 3 different managers you've played under, all used you as a utility player rather than the CM position you always say you are, hopefully Arteta changes that if AMN is to stay a while longer.

With the whole Nelson and Willock debate too, I remember see Willock in pre season 2 years ago now and he was a tall thin kid, then I was at the Blackpool game and I thought "whoa that can't be Willock" he was massive, and then I watched the Newcastle game and he was tracking his runners and when he lost the ball, working his socks off getting it back, putting some great challenges in and carrying the ball really well, he can be a top player in my opinion, same as Nelson, it's a waiting game for me with Reiss and when Arteta starts getting him going he won't be stopped, he won't be at Sancho level, but I'm happy if he gets one level below that!

11.) 20 Jun 2020 19:01:36
I’d happily give AMN a Chance in midfield as long as his attitude is right. That’s where we must start - attitude.

He deserves a chance in his favoured position - a good run out.

Good result by all accounts!

I feel like that starting XI was worth taking a note of, in 12 to 18 months there will only be a handful of players left (ESR, MO, White and Taraves) .

Crazy how much better Ramsdale is than Leno, and the same goes for Tomiyasu over Cedric, I'm a bit worried that if we lost one of those two we could see our season take a major wobble.

Oh and finally, Patino eh. Nothing better than seeing a youngster mark their debut with a goal. Quality.

Akie

{Ed014's Note - can’t argue with any of that and my thoughts exactly on Cedric and Leno.

Really hope we bring Saliba back into the squad next season.

1.) 21 Dec 2021 22:15:49
Ok so it was only Sunderland, but wow, a really nice performance. So many boxes have been ticked my pen ran out!

{Ed0666's Note - So Arteta in then?? By the way I really like the look of Tamiyaso why does he get so many detractors?

2.) 22 Dec 2021 18:06:04
Not yet Ed. We still need to show we can beat teams competing for the top 4 before the doubts will ease. The poor results against Man Utd and Everton did nothing to support his case.

{Ed0666's Note - really I think he’s doing a splendid job under the circumstances and vitriol he’s received.

18 Dec 2021 19:41:40
Good result against Leeds, but worried about a few sloppy passes from Partey, a better side could have punished us but overalls quite tidy. Martinelli put in a Alexis-esque performance tonight and Saka/ Smith-Rowe quality as always.

Getting closer to January and I'm hoping we get a top class forward in, I'd like DCL from Everton and I think we should also be looking for a decent backup right back because cedric was very shakey when he came on.

Looks as if we will be losing one of our senior strikers in Auba or Laca and also Leno. So here's hoping for a window similar to the summer.

Top 4 doesn't look like it's ours to lose, but this kind of form definitely makes me think we are in with a good shout. I'd be happy if we end the season by going on a few 5-6 unbeaten streaks and a loss here and there, we are not the finished product so I think that's a reasonable request!

Seems a bit worrying that we never seem to learn with our transfer policy. All Sheffield had to do was wait and they probably knew we would give them what they wanted for Ramsdale. It reminds me of when we sold Gibbs to WBA for 8m but rejected 10m at the start of the season.

Very disappointed with this window since it was made apparent we were trying to clear the squad and we've failed miserably with that. Ben White is a good addition and Lokonga looks very promising, apart from that we've bought back ups and still have the same issues as last season (Willian, Laca, Xhaka, Bellerin and Auba out of form) . Makes me very nervous for this season. Especially considering how United, Chelsea and City look a lot stronger than last season and Leicester and Liverpool are just better than us I'm expecting another 7/ 8th finish.

Fingers crossed those mentioned can find a way out of the club in the remaining days and I'd be happy to see Holding, Chambers, Elneny and even Auba leave.

Once again Arsenal leaving it late. Disappointed.

I can’t see us getting rid of any of those players Akie, there are just no buyers out there who can both afford the wages we pay those players, and pay us a transfer fee. At best I see a loan deal, where we probably still end up paying the majority of the players wages. This should be very sobering for the management of premiership clubs. The transfer boom has bust, not at the very top of course, there’s still plenty of money for the very best, but as for the rest, there no market for them. The top clubs in Spain are out the market, and those in the next tier, the Valencia’s and Seville’s of European football, just can’t match the wages we currently pay our first team squad. I would be seriously looking at our transfer, and more importantly our wage policy if I was management. As for giving Xhaka a new contract, unless it’s at 30% of his previous salary, is absolute madness.

2.) 18 Aug 2021 22:07:14
Not going to lie you lost me a bit at the start that we never seem to learn. Pretty sure it's the other way around where we've waited and paid less than they wanted for ramsdale

As for the players we haven't shipped out yes it in concerning but its not as easy as say computer games at getting rid of unwanted players.

Guess the only thing I can say is all try our best and get behind the team and fingers crossed we do well.

3.) 18 Aug 2021 22:38:38
I'm not in the slightest bit nervous about how much Liverpool City United Chelsea strengthen because we are not on their level at this moment in time.
Our current battle is to not get left behind by Leicester Spurs Vila right now.

When we can regularly out perform Leicester Spurs Vila again it will then be time to turn our sights on bigger things.

4.) 18 Aug 2021 23:31:05
Well said D16! Plus the window isn’t over yet. Obviously it would be ideal to complete all business before the start of the season, but there may be a more ins and outs yet. Judge them and the end of the window.

5.) 19 Aug 2021 00:13:46
Nice reply D16 was about to write pretty much exactly the same ( or maybe the opposite) 🤣🤣🤣 some people really should stick to playing FIFA.

6.) 19 Aug 2021 18:34:53
I completely understand its not as easy as selling a player like on fifa. All I said was how concerned I was that they haven't been able to be moved on and fingers crossed they can be moved on. I don't get why you think that was a clueless statement to make to be honest?

09 Jun 2021 16:35:32
Hi Ed, is there any interest is Ridle Baku of Wolfsburg? I thought he had a good season just gone with some decent goal involvement from right back.

Akie

{Ed002's Note - Yes but it is nothing to do with Arsenal.}

I wonder how long Richard Garlick will be at Arsenal for? My bet is he's gone within a year like everybody else in the past 3 years.

I'm here all week :)

Hope he goes, it's one thing being our best Midfielder, but that still doesn't make him good enough for where we need to be. I'm happy to recoup some money for him and try something else.

He's a good player and he will probably excell in a different team or league, but it's never really worked out for him here.

I'm sick to death of having half arsed clear outs every year, this needs to be cut throat and ruthless.

I can see Patino getting a few minutes here and there this season but nothing major, he's still a skinny young lad and games like Norwich was a real physical test, and probably too much for him right now.

I think 6 months for Jack would be a good idea, he bleeds Arsenal and sounds like he is right on board with Arteta's plan.

There must be a midfielder we are looking at or close to completing a otherwise the AMN deal is a bit foolish to be doing right now with AFCON on the horizon.

SY, in my opinion its a bonus that he can play in various positions, there has been many players in history that have been world class in 2/ 3 defensive positions (Lahm, Alaba, Ramos, Maldini) I understand that the chances of him reaching those heights are VERY slim. But it definitely doesn't mean he's going to be poor in a few positions rather than good in one.

He's been on the radar all year according to Ornstein, so happily he's not a panic buy. So let's hope he hits the ground running.

It's not just the players we need, the club is a mess from top to bottom. Nothing can run correctly when the staff are being changed every 12 months and the owners are as bad as they are.

We don't deserve to be anywhere near the top, so we won't be this season or the next. Clubs like Leicester who are run as well as they are, will finish above us, a club like City who won the league so easily, have improved once again, United have been in a similar position to us in recent years, have spent big.

We are a mess and will be for a long time.

I'd love to be positive about the near future but I really can't. Just when we seem to get the high earners off the wage bill, we stick another one on a three year deal for well over £200k a week.

My ideal scenario would be to see a core of homegrown players succeed and to be back in the CL with a top 3 finish, I'd love to see Saka, ESR, Balogun, Azeez, Lopez and Patino all in the first team. However what I think will happen is that we will be exactly where we are now. I'm going to try getting used to it, because I think we are here to stay.
