Missed opportunity for headline of the week: "Arsenal caught short with Coq out"

On a more serious note, back to the pressing concerns. Every Arsenal fan has learned to expect injuries (and to key players) followed by makeshift, usually below-par backup. Seriously, what has baffled me since the summer is the fact Arsenal sold, released and above all, loaned out enough players to put together a squad in its own right.

A fair few of them made sense but our situation might not look as desperate if we'd at least waited to sign someone before deciding whether to loan out Akpom, Hayden and, above all, Gnabry. Just seems that while our squad is depleted, while too many of the loanees are getting too little time to develop elsewhere.

Very mixed emotions when I read that one-liner. Fair play but still REALLY no need to go reminding us
As for the team chat, fair point. Problem is Arsenal should be targeting higher calibre players than over half the options they've loaned out (who, let's face it, will NOT ALL make it at Arsenal - in fact, half probably never will) so not loaning them out is still not exactly addressing the problem of a lack of quality. If they'd managed to sign worthy backup for Coquelin, chances are we'd not even be mentioning loanees. Still, a little more squad rotation could avoid such regular injuries and we're denying ourselves those options. A good two or three of them don't seem to be getting much out of their loans too; January recalls would be very helpful in the circumstances.
Peace.

Well the good news is qualification tomorrow wouldn't see Arsenal draw Juve in the next round.

To be fair just being there would be a bonus and beggers can't be chooser's and all that, in fairness because of the way we've disrespected thge opposition maybe a it will be little more than we will have deserved if we get through.
I know people will see that as a negative thing to say but it would be true of city utd and Chelsea if they treated the opposition to lightly so it has to be true of us too.

We took them far too lightly it has to be said.

Five goals needed to put us top. Piece of cake. Flamini starting so there's a brace right there. Ozil, Giroud and Kos with the rest.

I'd settle for being in second place tonight quite happily.

I'm all for playing Chambers at DM against weaker opposition to see how he fares, but if I had to make a makeshift DM out of one of our defenders, I'd go for Nacho: he's adapted his position before, covers a lot of miles every game, has more height to offer than any of our other full-backs, looks to run forward but knows when to track back and can actually play a good pass - IE a forward ball to launch an attack. A few games there to experiment shouldn't knock his confidence at his age and at least we'd know what to expect with Gibbs coming in to replace him.

Any takers?

Hi LB. Don't mean this unkindly but something about your name and avatar always makes me think of the guy from The Inbetweeners firat film who is on his own and keeps trying to toe along with the four lads. Like I say, no offence intended although I accept it isn't very complimentary!

Anyway, what about trying Beilik alongside Ramsey or Cazorla or even Monreal. He is young, raw, inexperienced, yes, no doubt, but what are squad players for if not for filling in when needed?
Barely ideal, I accept but that is the folly of not buying the polish Sevilla DM whose name I can't spell, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Victor Wanyama or William Carvalho. Or Kim Kallstrom for that matter.
Max Farnham.

Not a bad shout to be honest.

Nacho or Gibbs.

3.) 25 Nov 2015 22:05:01
Gibbs would be a very last resort for me, he can't be a disappointed Lb let alone DM. He's aa ball cheer and is better suited to an attacking roll.

Just look at those Spuds. What a decline: highest scoring player in the league last year and now - not a single player of their own on the scoresheet. Long may this 'dip in form' continue

Joint highest scorer for the season is...? My God, who saw that coming?!

Fair comments.
I'd also say that our full-backs have been really solid since at least about January: Monreal has done more than enough to hold down his starting place and Bellerin has been an absolute revelation. Best full-back we've had since Cole. Says a lot that he's keeping Debuchy out of the starting 11, although I think Debuchy is finally showing he has what it takes to return to the form he was in when Arsenal signed him.

despite initial reluctance to believe it, if it is true, maybe it's Roman's way of thanking Wenger for allowing Chelsea to sign Cesc...

Yeah. A touch of Flamini's attitude and spirit - just not past his best yet.

Very well said Brow. Wenger's persistent optimism cost Arsenal dearly todqy. Granted, refereeing decisions didn't help but it was the response to them that was most critical: Chambers should ordinarily have replaced Ozil or Sanchez. Bearing in mind that Santi was already on a yellow, the priority should have been damage limitation - Santi off, Chambers on, sit deep to grind out a goalless draw and quietly hope of hitting them on the break with Theo's pace. Instead, we saw a naive, inexperienced defender partner Koscielny without adequate cover in front and ended the match two goals down and with 9 men left. Positives to draw from this? Somehow it wasn't 3 or 4-0, maybe?

They've played one game together this season - not two. A clean sheet against a 10-man Newcastle isn't a mind-blowing stat as far as a defensive partnership is concerned, least of all with Cech in goal to support them.
Mertesacker might be useful against Stoke for his height, although that was presumed last year and didn't stop him ducking...

I seriously rate Monk and see what you're saying but it's also worth remembering how easy it is for the manager of the so-called lesser team to gamble strategically knowing they're not under the same pressure to win. Swansea can lose to Utd at home and it'll be forgotten by their fans faster than the actual result will get forgotten by Utd fans...
