Does anyone know how serious Arteta's injury was at the end? Think we might need him on Sunday. :/

Macc Gooner {Ed027's Note - Major doubt for Sunday

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Wilshere Ramsey Rosicky can do the business

Are Arsenal fans aware that a 2 goal win at Newcastle, coupled with an Everton draw at Chelsea, would take Arsenal into 3rd place in the Premier League and thus automatic entry into the Champions League without the need for any playoff match.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Calm down there big fella. let's get rid of 5th first before thinking about 3rd eh.

Agree0 Disagree0

There's one match left! I'd say its time to aim for 3rd

Spurs fan in peace here.
I would have to say, you had your sticky moments tonight but you showed great fight and spirit.
If we get 72 points I can't complain at that. Our record prem points total.
Now if you get 73 then it is thoroughly deserved and I will have no complaints.
Hopefully next season will be just as close b
Well played gooners.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thanks mate if I'm honest I would have rather Chelsea lost out rather than spurs but just shows you an do what you like if you throw millions at it
Dandan

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed. Would be fun to have BOTH North London clubs in the CL for once instead of that West London club who I shall not name. :D

14 May 2013 22:25:19
Great win from the lads brilliant performance!
And if Chelsea draw against Everton and we win by one goal that would leave us on the same points and goal difference who will get third?

Dave

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Most goals scored. but the thing is, that will be even as well haha!

SO I wonder if it goes to away goals or something.

Agree0 Disagree0

Whoever has scored the most goals.

Im guessing that's chelsea so we would need to win by 2

Agree0 Disagree0

But let's just get 4th before we even think about 3rd :P

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey mate,

It can get really complicated! Basically it would go to goals scored after goal difference. But if we win 2-1 and Chelsea draw 0-0 for example, we'll have the same goals scored, goal difference, and points. There's some suggestion that there might even have to be a playoff in that case. Although I think it's quite possible it could just go to head to head, in which case Chelsea would be 3rd. I'm not sure exactly what would happen though. Maybe the Eds know?

Cheers.

Macc Gooner {Ed027's Note - I really don't know mate, lets just win the game first!

Agree0 Disagree0

14 May 2013 22:18:35
Eds, do you think this summer will see fans beckoning for a mass exodus like last year? I remember this time last year, everyone was calling for Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillaci, etc. to be sold, and while there are a few, such as those three, who I would like to get off of the wage bill, I don't get the feeling there is as much clamoring for an exodus coming into this summer. Would you say that's accurate? Who, besides Djourou, is close to leaving? Cheers.

-Birmingham Gooner {Ed027's Note - Fabianski & Mannone seem to be on there way out, Mannone could stay on. Sagna looks a cert imo. Squillachi & Djourou will leave, Frimpong looks as if he's on his way as he's out of contract. Denilson, Arshavin, Chamkah, Park, Bendthner, Galindo, Watt, Eastmon, Anga, Ebecelico all will leave or will be given the chance to leave

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't know if fans are now calling for one so much as just expecting one. We have an unusual amount of first team players who never play, plus a lot of players with contracts winding down, and a lot of loanees.

It will be a busy summer, I could easily see 10 players leaving, some expensive replacements coming in, on decent wages, and a really strong line up for next season.

Rambo's first goal in 15 months, fully deserved in my opinion. He's been fantastic this season but totally underrated. Just wondering who's going to die tomorrow.

Didn't he score in the CL this year?!

Part 1 done now for Newcastle, remember we still need a result there.
Really nervous for the 15 Mins of the 2nd half as Wigan were on top and at 1-1 that was a massive save by Schenzy to stop Kone scoring at that time.

Feel a little for Wigan and Martinez as they a good well run club and play play good football, just defense let them down.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree. shez's save was pivotal, awesome:):)
well done lads!:)tonight I even have to say well done Wally:)

If we win 1-0 and Chelsea draw, we both finish with

38 points and 35 goal differential

Who gets third and automatic qualification?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Us! It should go down to alphabetical order!

-Homesick-

Agree0 Disagree0

The team which has scored most goals.
Well done tonight if you beat Newcastle then you deserve 4th place.
A spurs fan

Agree0 Disagree0

Goals scored.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea on goals scored, we'd have to win 2-1 and they draw 0-0 then we'd be all square, my guess is it would go to a play off

Agree0 Disagree0

14 May 2013 22:24:18
Whoever scored more goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd guess its probably then based on the results between us and Chelsea meaning that they would because they beat us in the games against us. Only a guess though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Does it not then go to head to head?

Agree0 Disagree0

Possibly done on away wins, or away goals?

Agree0 Disagree0

So win by 2 against Newcastle and hope that Everton get a result against Chelsea. right?

A tough ask, but hopefully arsenal go out and get the win.

Still nervous on the last day, as Arsenal can finish anywhere from 3rd to 5th.

Why do people think mertesacker is a bad defender if you look at the season as a whole he has been our best CB in my opinion. Some people just chat s**t!

Anyway great result did what we needed to do its still in our hands.

SM1996

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, he's good
Just his pace that let's him down

Sunderland fan here, thanks for that, did us a huge favour, we will try to knock points off Tottenham to repay you

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree the Kos / Mertasaker partnership has gone from strength the strength. They as much as anyone have given us the solid platform to drag us back into contention for that top 4 place.

Not sure what will happen with TV5 now but I happy to have 3 good CB's in our squad and I don't think we really need a CB in the summer. A DM winger and striker is higher priority.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's not a bad Defender it's just we play a high line and he's lack I pace is very suspect against a counter attack, also for someone of his height he ain't half get bullied about

But no doubting his and Kos partnership has been the main reason we have got back to where we are fingers crossed TV5 could be our missing DM we crave
Dandan

would everyone agree that BFG and Kos developing into one of best defensive partnerships in prem. However I would still like AW to bring in defensive reinforcements for greater squad depth.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

100% agree

Agree0 Disagree0

Or even in Europe?

We concede very few goals from sloppy defending in open play.

Shaneyd

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I doubt it mate, I think probably more a 'don't forget this guy' gesture as he is club captain.

Then again, he is club captain.

I am sure if we are to challenge for anything next season we will need all 3 CBs and I hope Wenger attempts to rejuvenate him rather than just selling him. If he puts in a TF request then it's game over though.

Person Dean strikes again!!

Ok you can say the Wigan goal should have been prevented by Podolski jumping and szcz having a stroinger hand. mbut the root cause was Deanks eagerness to give a decision against us

There there was nothing at all wrong with Arteta's challenge and maloney bought a cheap decision off a ref who seems eager to give it- same as every time he officiates our games

I don't need to grow up and I can see the stats don't lie!

Deans performances need proper investigation!

common let's not target the ref. we are not playing against UTD or real Madrid and its not a penalty decision.
we didn't score enough. simple. we invited them to attack.
decisions goes both ways. and we should win games in style not with referees big help.
and BTW. arsenal's goal which came from a corner was never a corner.

Victor Valdes has told Barca that he will be leaving the club this summer.
I guess he will be going to a rather big club, getting big money. Would have liked him to join Arsenal, as he is a top Goalie. but, I guess our wage-structure will stop this from materializing. Any thoughts Eds?

Norwegian Gunner {Ed027's Note - Barca is a big as it gets, we are probably the only big club looking for Gk after Barca, Utd are happy with De Gea, Milan could be in for Cesar

What I believe is needed in our squad right now is a profilic goalscorer in the front. An effective winger, who also can get among the goals. A versatile defender. And at last a central defender with some power, to compete with arteta (for a defending role ofc).

My wishing-list would be:

Striker:

- Higuain, pure class in front of goal. Smart in his movement, good touch, and of course a brilliant finisher.
- Rooney, I know it is a longshot but he is great. The workrate, the touch, the physique. He is a beast, and he has that mentality that I think we lack at times.
- Fernando Torres, also abit unlikley at best. But I would take Torres in a heartbeat. He fits the Arsenal style of play perfectly, and in a club where he is given time and opportunities, I think he could be brilliant. He has so much to play for as well. Will he take a pay-cut though?

Wingers:

- Angel Di Maria, pace, dribbling and crossing at a very high level. He got that flair and x-factor that I believe our present wingers lack. He also has a good shot.
- Alexis Sanchez, possess some of the same qualities as di Maria, but he also is quite strong physicaly. I think he would fit our style of play great. But the question is if he will leave Barca or not, or if Arsenal will pay the fee and wages.
- Robben, enough said realy. Great player. Looks like he is leaving Bayern this summer, and think he could do wonders in Arsenal. But will Wenger have his ego?

Dm:

- Gonalons, tall, good ballwinner, and a good foot. He will do the job in defence, and do the easy passes in attack. Typical dm, and in mye oppinion what we lack abit today although arteta is doing an incredible job.
- Wanyama, pure power and a good passer of the ball as well. But I fear he will be realy expensive. The new Vieria?
- Capoue, realy good header of the ball, as he is quite tall, also good in possesion and good tackler as well. Good player.

Defender:

- Richards, can play cb just as well as rb. Quick and intelligent, but not a very reliable touch on the ball, and injury prone. But I realy would love to see him in red.
- Nicolas N-Koulou, quick, powerfull and versatile. Just what we need. Young player as well.
- Corchia, not versatile as he plays purley on the right back. But still want him as he can compete with jenkinson for the right back spot, as I see sagna leave this summer. Two young and hungry players to compete for the same position could be gold for us.

Sorry for long post, hope to get som viewes from you guys though.

Lets hope we kick som wigan a** tonight, COYG!

On the train to Dublin to move into my new flat, getting in a 6, I'll have my bags unpacked by 7 and then it's a few cold one's and watch the Gooner's cap of my day!

We, need to throw everything at them in the first half, bar Sagna, Kos & Mert, we can't get caught on the break, because if we do go behind they'll drop there two wide men back and line the defence with 5.
2-0 before the half and play possession after that.

Could anyone tell me about how good Costel Pantilimon truly is? I saw him play one single match and I was quiet impressed, but it is too little to juge him. But if he plays every match at that level I saw then he could be worth a move!

Stan

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I've seen him a couple of times he's not great, the Semi final you are talking about he probably played the game of his life. Iwould not be happy if we signed him as Fabianski is much much better IMO

Thanks for your answer dandan, I hope for someone consistent to be our goalkeeper. As I said in an earlier post I was sad we missed on Lloris he's one of the best keepers I've ever seen, but now we should focus on finding an other keeper with even more talent!

Given changes at Man City - would love to see a bid for Micah Richards.

Player I still believe has huge potential under the right guidance.

Billybob

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I do like Richards but feel he would be a gamble? I guess if you could get him for cheap enough its worth a punt under £8m over that then no not worth it

id like to play him at CB to feel he could dominate that position

dandan

Agree0 Disagree0

Well worth a punt!

Sheeny

Agree0 Disagree0

Richards is an unbelievably good player - rumours last summer that Madrid were considering a £25m bid for him say all that needs to be said. Injuries aside, even if we paid £20m for him it would be well spent.

Cazorla has to play in the middle today, in my humble opinion.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Dead right dead, he's far less effective on the wings, if Wigan are playing 3 at the back i'd love to see Walcott and Podolski out wide, Podolski's link up play with Gibbs on the wing is superb at times, unfortunately that means Gerv in the centre but this game will be won from the wings if Wigan play 3 at back. Gibbs will have to watch his positioning in defence though because Wigan break v quickly with 5 in midfield.

Not claiming any of these are mine, but have heard in the media and from a couple contacts recently that:

-Man U are interested in Cesc, as are Bayern
-Bayern will bid for Wilshere this summer
-There are a few teams in France interested in Coquelin and will make a bid if we buy another CM
-We're trying to peddle one of our strikers (not chamakh unfortunately) to a Turkish side

Also ed can you shine any light on the GK rumours? Does this mean Szcz may be off? {Ed027's Note - No Szcz is seen as No,2, he's for the future, but of course if he wants to leave, he probably will

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Would this make you think they we would be going for an older keeper that will do for a couple of years rather than a long term solution?

Mark Schwarzer (Fulham GK) is on a free?

Who would the people out there prefer, wilfred bony or loic remy, 'cos there are reports we are interested in them both. I would prefer remy, as he would be cheaper and proven in the epl.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Cheaper yes but I wouldn't say he's proven himself. He would probably end up being deployed as a wide striker. Something we don't need. Bony however is an out and out front man. Had a prolific goal scoring season ( all be it the Dutch league ), more of a physical presence dare I say similar to his fellow countryman Drogba.

Agree0 Disagree0

There is only 2 strikers that I would like to see at arsenal that seem available this summer and that is rooney and higuain

14 May 2013 17:27:45
Remy isn't good enough, maybe a decent bench warmer, but we need better, certainly take Rooney but I'm not keen on Higuain, always weary of big La Liga scorers, goals come easier in Spain.

I actually think we have a slight shot at signing Rooney!

I heard he contacted us a couple of weeks back to sound out a move and he surely isn't dumb enough to hand in a request when he did without having a potential deal in place.

I always thought he would go PSG but realistically I can't see him living abroad off the pitch, he would really struggle! As would his wife.

Spanish league doesn't suit him either and will frustrate him so a Ronaldo p/x ain't going to happen.
He either stays at Utd or leaves for another Prem team!

Only 2 teams he can go too. Chelsea & us!

He would like London as would his wife!

What we have over Chavs is the fact he would spearhead our attack & be the leader of the squad and a mentor to a great British core of players with Jack, Theo, Ox, Gibbs, Rambo & Jenks. He gets on with them all and can see how we treat players that respect the club and become legends on the pitch by honouring them for life.

He could build a legacy at Arsenal by dragging us back to contention & winning something. He would never be forgotten for that!

Poor form this season but loads of things against him. He would thrive at Arsenal.

Imagine
Wilshere Arteta (Or DM signing such as Capoue/Gonalons)
Theo Santi Podolski/Ox
Rooney
Or Rooney in the hole off Giroud or Villa/Jotevic/Higuain & Santi wide.

That would be a crazy strike force and one which he would thrive.
More so than he would a Chelsea.

Chelsea don't have a strong UK contingent now & he wouldn't fit in there at all and would be seen to be chasing money. I don't think he is one to chase the money too much & would prove it by taking a wage cut to join us. We would pay him like £150k I think.

Huge changes at Arsenal this summer, we will spend at least £50m! Maybe closer to £70m

Call me crazy but he is 40/1 to join Arsenal and I have had a cheeky £5 on it!

Boisey

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If united agree to 25 mill, and also the fact that he will have to possibly settle for 50k less in his salary.

we could offer him 200k if at all. but it would be a stretch.

however it depends on champions league. so does the likes of higuain.

players who don't need us to be in champions league would be jovetic, gonzalons basically players who are not been pursued for big money.

Agree0 Disagree0

What a great way to loose a bet the fiver was better of somewhere else

Watford gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

I guess time will tell, now throw fab into the mix along with Rooney and a DM we will be looking very strong indeed. can't see it happening though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney as a mentor/role model?
Now i'v heard it all

Agree0 Disagree0

Only if he took a massive wage cut and forced his own price down by acting out a bit. Otherwise it's Chelsea I would say, he'll be cheaper then Cavani/Falcao they can pay his wage, or maybe one of the German or Italian teams would take a punt, couldn't see Madrid/Barca go for him and he wouldn't settle for Athetico or below. I think he has more ambition then to play for PSG, he'll win a bunch of Ligue 1's but there as valuable as SPL titles IMO, but if they offer 300,000 a week and he'll be alongside some brilliant players, they might even challenge for Champo in another 2 years time.

Sheeny

This Jack Wilshere situation is really hacking me off, we over play him on his return, get him involved in a 90 minute friendly for England, the injury flares up and were still putting him on the bench and then the pitch with pain killers.

Wtf are they trying to do to him, why not the op now.

Stoner

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think he is injuered. he's having a surgery to remove a pin which was placed there from before. he can easily play, but they don't want to take any risks, and tbh why would they? we are winning and on a very good run.
Waq

Agree0 Disagree0

Only at Arsenal do you get a small niggle and are out for 3mnths.
Rosicky, Diaby, Wilshere all took way too long to come back. Our medical staff are horrible.

Agree0 Disagree0

We had this discussion a month ago Stoner if you remember, I did say for his own good he needs to not play another game this season. He is being run into the ground, has been for years now. Too much football, too soon in his career. Seems Arsenal are putting next season's UCL football qualification ahead of Wilshere's career.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

14 May 2013 17:18:24
Guys,

Just think there seems no point extending his season whether its minor or not. The extra rest can only help him. Surely if they're looking after him properly this wouldn't have arisen again.

He's hardly been used the last few months and yes Syd it's just stupid to put his career at any more risk.

Stoner

Agree0 Disagree0

Stoner, it's the amount of games he played before his long injury layoff that broke him. Nasri & Cesc leaving didn't help either as he was used far more than he should have been used. When he had his first recurrence of is ankle injury he should have been given plenty of time to recuperate. Look at Sterling, played an awful lot in the beginning of his career and now he keeps getting injured. Burnout killed Owen's career and if AW isn't careful it could ruin Wilshere's. He is being far more careful with AOC, perhaps he's learned from it?

Just put my entire betting balance on spurs to finish top 4 to try and soften the blow if we don't make it. Not sure it will help though come on Arsenal let's get these 6 points. anyone going tonight make sure we make some noise

Utd have no intrest in Cesc, rumour fabricated by Barcelona to put pressure on Arsenal. (Every one knows there just one option)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Makes no sense. The story is completely fabricated yes but not for the reason you say.

Why?

Because AFC have first-refusal on Cesc. So unless we've negated (impossible) then United can't bid, full stop. Unless they activate his RC (£175m)

Rumours from england. nothing from spain.

i really don't see why they would sell their second highest goal scorer and one of their key players, even off the bench.

villa and sanchez before cesc. everyone just speculates. I still see it as a thing of pride for them to keep him another season if at all.

remember with villa almost certain to go. it means iniesta turns into winger and cesc plays where iniesta would.

everyone predicted his exit when he did not play against bayern. but then at home when messi did not play. they stuck him as a forward over villa and sanchez. that should settle your doubts.

40 mil punt on Higuain and Di Maria then another 30 mil on a defender and defensive mid! wow now that would be some team then! what do you think fellow gooners that's my perfect summer!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

40mil on Higuain and Di Maria would be great. No need for 30mil on def and Def Mid, Just get Wanyama for £10-15m as he can cover both. Replace Sagna or Verm if they leave. Net spend of about £50mil and we should be contenders again.

Well well, who'd have thought that Arsenal vs Wigan would be one of the biggest games of the year, for neutrals and their fans? Incredible. Nervous now!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Just watched a clip of the last game ever at highbury. Arsenal vs Wigan. We won the game 4-2 to finish the league in 4th spot ahead of spurs. Finished the season 20+ points behind the league winner. how times have changed!

Mike Dean is Refereeing the Game vs Wigan tomorrow. Can we just say the CL is a no chance now? Arsenal are Sub 7% with him Refereeing.

Huge majority of those games were against the top 3, and in the one game that we had to win at all costs, against spuds, we came out on top. However, I am more concerned with the fact that no FA Cup winning team has ever been relegated in the same season (saw this in the Telegraph, but my guess would be that very, very few of those winners actually fought relegation).

Look, after we lost to spuds, we were given no chance to be anywhere near the top 4, and 2 months after, it's in our hands, with some nerve-wracking matches along the way (good grief, some of those chances WBA had against us, I almost fainted as it seemed the net would be about to bulge, especially Lukaku's chance).

But anyway, last year, Arteta, probably our most consistently good player, was injured in the same game and we lost, but I believe if he stays fit throughout the game, then I think Wigan won't pull it off this time.

Finally, all of the fans have to make as much noise as possible, and of course if AW doesn't do anything similar to what Mancini did (take Nasri off for Milner, or Tevez off for Rodwell), then we should be ok, and for me, it will be a very tense, but an important 2-1 victory for us.
