We have won our last 11 PL home games, keeping 8 clean sheets.

Not too shabby.

Yup Dags but the moment you praise the team then comes a puncture. I hope they keep it tight and who knows come end of season.

To follow on with the stuff about Pele we were discussing, though most of you lot probably remember it well as you are all old enough to remember the move to Highbury, let alone moving from it!

Oh Ed001 you've stirred up some memories there mate, the move from Woolwich!
I was well against it at the time, I remember saying to my great great great grandson at the time how Highbury would never feel like home.

{Ed001's Note - I knew you would remember it well g62. I heard Methuselah used to call you an old git....}

Lol Ed,
I've been laughing at that all day 😁.

{Ed001's Note - Doddy taught me well then!}

Should we try and sell Ozil and Sanchez in the January window, providing we replace them?
Apparently there is talk of Ozil to Barcelona for £20m, with Andre Gomes coming to us.
There is also talk of Sanchez to Real for £30m. Would fellow Gooners consider Bale or James Rodriguez coming to us as part of the deal? Assuming Rodriguez is able to leave as part of his loan deal.
If we keep the pair until the end of the season we not only receive no payment for them, but we lose any leverage we may have to secure players from other teams as part of any deals.

part of the deal? Why would they be part Of any deal? 30 million is more than I imagine you’ll get when he could join in the summer for free, big money needs to be spent but will it happen? Who knows.

Those were the figures quoted in the articles I saw. £20m for Ozil and £30m for Sanchez. Any players coming our way would of course alter the figures.
The sums teams pay never make any sense, however, I believe clubs will pay such fees to secure the players signature for the rest of the season and to get there before another clubs enters the bidding when they become free agents. Even though both players will be free in the summer, they could command signing on fees and high wages as they are in position to dictate terms.
As an example we signed Kolasinac on a free, but are paying a very high salary reported to be £150,000 a week, possibly for a 5 year deal.

{Ed002's Note - Kolasinac was not free, there was a very significant signing on fee.}

Ed02, i know you don't like to discuss money (so i am about to ask you about money! ) , but do existing players who sign a new contract also get a big signing on fee, and can clubs use it as a way to reduce their monthly wage bill? For example, if we offered Sanchez a new deal, rather than pay him a large increase in salary which is outside our comfort zone, could we instead offer a large signing on fee say £5 million) and as a result offer a smaller monthly salary that keeps him within our wage scale?

{Ed002's Note - No - he would want a signing on fee and a wage increase.}

21 Nov 2017 14:08:07
Absolutely, Ed002 - Paid to the player, not his club and reported wages of £150,000 a year, presumably for a 5 year deal.
