Loved the article mate, it was a fantastic time for boxing, I’m now going to watch those 3 minutes again. It was great to know all that he did after that fight.

I was gutted at the time as wanted Tommy to win.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have watched that Hagler fight a few times now, since starting my research. It is just so good. Glad you enjoyed mate.}

Marvelous Marvin, Sugar Ray, The hit man and Duran, what a generation that was.
Sometimes Boxers are unlucky due to the generation they are born into, like Larry Holmes who was unfortunate to not have opponents in his prime who could get up to his level and the same for Tyson too.
But Hagler Herns Leonard Duran much like Ali Frazer Foreman all came together at just the right time to give fights that will live long in the memory and be passed down for future generations to admire too.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - these days too many fighters spend their careers avoiding the best opponents. The best in those days chased the big fights.}

26 Oct 2018 18:52:34
I used to have the hearns and hagler fight on my old vhs. I used to watch it once a month for about 18 months and it was great viewing every time. The greatest fight I've ever seen. Amazing!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - well worth watching.}

Money has always been a factor in top sport but now days it's the number one priority mate and while a minority of individuals benefit from this the vast majority are sold short.
I'm sure there are loads of retired who retire very rich but with a head full of I wonder what I could have achieved I'd put the sporting side first.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - and I bet most would have been richer by putting the sporting side first.}

26 Oct 2018 19:34:47
The other thing I hadn’t known was Hearns busting his right hand in the 1st and you can see he wasn’t throwing it like he had in the 1st. Such a shame.

Could of possibly had a different outcome. Gave me goosebumps watching it again.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I hadn't realised that until reading it. I had watched it without knowing it, then watched it again knowing that and it does completely change how you view it.}

26 Oct 2018 22:01:05
I agree Ed. It’s cringe worthy that some of the fighters out there pretend to be king but are scared to death to fight certain individuals. Amir Khan springs to mind.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he also springs to mind when you think of glass chins!}

27 Oct 2018 12:49:04
Hagler is my favourite middle weight of all time. Although Hearns was unbelievable, winning world titles at 5 different weights.
Favourite heavyweight was Mike Tyson, an absolute beast in his prime.

11 wins in a row is a great achievement, but the big test is yet to come, if we start off slow like we have in nearly every game
Then Liverpool will be 3/ 4 up in the first half, I’ve been dreading this game for a while and I pray to god we win.

Depending on our results against Palace and Blackpool, our level of confidence is growing and will no doubt help us against Liverpool.
We are at home to Liverpool and the excitement of the fans is growing fast, getting behind the team, driving them on.
Against Sporting I cannot recall hardly any shots on target. So defensively we are improving. With Leno in goal we are playing out better from the back.
I have a feeling that the respective attacks may cancel each other out and we might nick a draw.

Which Centre back pairing do fellow Gooners consider will be the best when Koscielny and Mavrapanos are fit?
From:
Holding
Koscielny
Mavrapanos
Mustafi
Sokratis.

Socs and holding.

26 Oct 2018 11:51:25
Scary, all of them have at least one bad mistake in them per game and we don't really know if Kos is ever going to get back to his best. I would have to go sakratis and mustaffi but kos and holding could work if kos isn't over the hill. None of them are nailed on though.

G62! Absolutely!
Squilacci, Cygan and Stepanovs - What was Wenger thinking!
Djourou and Senderos - What was Wenger thinking!
Pat Howard and Terry Mancini - Shows my age!
Jeff Blockley and Willie Young - Shows my age even more!
John Roberts and Ian Ure! - Put me in an old age home!
Interested to see how many of these players you remember G62!

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Oct 2018 15:29:54
Geoff Blockley:-) I remember Geoff RG he was a Coventry player who both Arsenal and Leeds wanted and we won, or rather Leeds won because we signed poor old Geoff and they didn't :-)
Willie will always be famous for pulling a very young Paul Allen back in the cup final when he would have been one on one with the keeper something that I believe started the ball rolling for the professional foul red card being introduced.
I remember them all RG some more vaguely than others though I must admit.
How about John Devine Peter Marenello and Brian Hornsby?
Oh and Richie Powling too of course and not forgetting the legends Sammy Nelson Bob Mcnab Pat Rice George Armstrong and Eddie Kelly but to mention a few.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Brian Hornsby I know well G62, his wife was me ma's best mate when I was very small and we moved to Shrewsbury. He had just signed for the Shrews and his missus worked at a place called 'Silhouettes' making clothes with me mam. I can't remember if I am recalling it correctly as I am only going off what I have been told, I was a toddler at the time, but I am pretty sure Graham Turner's wife worked there too. He had just been made player-manager in those days.}

26 Oct 2018 16:02:09
Names from the past G62!
Trevor Ross
John Matthews
Gus Ceasar
Vladimir Petrovich
Jim Furnell
Geoff Barnett
Lee Chapman
John Hawley
Jimmy Rimmer
Alex Cropley

Did you remember all these?

Any supporters under 30 won't have a clue about all these players and probably can't believe that we once finished 17th in the old Div 1, as all they really know is Arsenal under Wenger!

Ed - I remember Graham Taylor well, he tried to sign me as a teenager when he was managing Watford, it would have been about 1978. I had trials the previous year when Watford were managed by Mike Keen, as I was spotted by a scout called Bill McCracken, who was ancient, but had a good eye for talented footballers. My parents wouldn't allow me to sign as they wanted me to complete my education. By the time I graduated from University I was too old for a pro career and played in the Isthmian League and the South Midlands MInerva League. Nostalgia!

Who remembers when Sammy Nelson scored both goals in a 1-1 draw with Coventry and then pulled his shorts down in front of the North Bank.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Oct 2018 16:33:39
I was at the match, I had a season ticket in the East Stand Lower seat at Highbury.
I met Sammy Nelson who was one of the old players that would provide entertainment in Club Level at The Emirates. Still looks the same!

Hi Ed001, The Hornby's live in Peterborough now mate and it's either Brian or his wife who works at Peterborough regional college where my wife works, she did tell me which one but I've forgotten now.
I know he still organises ex Arsenal players games or he did a couple of years back at least.
Yes RG I remember them all now you mentioned them exempt Jim Furnell who I can't remember at all, sorry Jim.
I remember Pat Jenninngs trying to punch Sammy Nelson in a cup semi for not being on his post while defending a corner, it was v Orient (I think) , I'm not sure how the cosy club members of our recent past would have handled playing with Pat and the players from that generation :-) I think they've have all put in transfer requests double quick :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I remember they had a daughter about my age, but he moved to Sheffield Wednesday and we moved as well, so my parents lost touch with them. Brian's name popped up when I was doing the Jack Charlton article, about Jack signing him from Shrewsbury.}

26 Oct 2018 18:09:34
Really nice people apparently mate, I've never met either, oh I've just remembered it is Mrs Hornsby who works at the college because she was telling my missus about the ex Arsenal charity game Brian was organising a few years back.
Speaking of Turners, does anyone remember Chris Turner the ex CB and Peterborough manager?
He did something no other manager has ever done with any club and no other manager will ever do again either, he took peterborough from 4th division to 1st division in just 2 seasons, any remember how?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - me ma always says they were really nice and I vaguely remember them being nice to me when I was a kid.}

27 Oct 2018 11:25:02
Sammy is a lovely guy and a true Gent. Wasn’t he suspended for pulling his shorts down. He did that because he got a lot of stick for not scoring.

Pat is a super guy and probably one of our best keepers in our history - another great steal from Spurs but I feel he’s still a Spurs supporter at heart. He joined along with Willie Young. Great tackle in the FA Cup final.

I think most players have a special elegance to thier original club or at least the one where they originally became well known SY mate.
Somewhere in Ashley Cole there will always be some Arsenal even though things turned sour between him and our fans and it's exactly the same for Sol Campbell with Spurs.

True but Sol refers to Arsenal as us or we.

Following on from my previous comment it must be remembered that we started last night's macth without the following players in the starting line up, that would be in our strongest starting 11: Bellerin, Mustafi, Monreal, Torreira, Ozil and Lacazette. On current form you could add Iwobi to the ljst and that means we started without 6 or 7 of our best starting line up and with Xhaka playing out of position. It also means that the team shoud be fresh to play our 3rd match in 6 days when we face Palace on Sunday.

3 games in 6 days is tough but when and if things go well (as ling as Sunday goes well of course ) It's a great way to build back up the momentum after the international break.
When your struggling the international break can be a welcome chance to stop and start again but if your buzzing as we are right now it can be really disruptive, so far so good and I think in this case the players will be pleased to be playing again so soon.

11 wins in a row says it all. Especially pleasing was a clean sheet and the performance of Guendouzi.
The defending is improving, as teams no longer seem able to get in behind the back four and we defend set pieces well.
What I keep noticing is our ability to draw teams onto us and creating space to hit them on the counter attack. This happens frequently so it must be a tactic. Far better than Wenger's high press that denied us space when we attacked.
Emery is an inspiration, great to see him on his feet coaching from the touchline and the players appear to like and respect him.
