European Super League?

Poor idea for me.

Champion's League is enough.

Why have a separate League?
What about the fans?
As much as I love Arsenal, I can't afford to follow them all around Europe every week.
Players (mostly) are very very handsomely paid as it is, with a Super League their wages would probably double.

If you remove all the top team's from their respective leagues, where would it leave that League?

Take Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool out of Prem League, what are you left with?

La Liga without Barca, Real Madrid and Athletico?

Bundesliga without Bayern Munich and Dortmund?

French League without PSG and Monaco?

Also, Super League means super investment, probably by the TV Companies.
What of the teams left behind? Or more importantly, what happens to their respective leagues?

TV Companies will pump vast sums of money into a Super League, whilst letting 'those left behind' to feed on scraps.

What happens to team's like Everton, who are not run by Russian Oligarchs or Saudi Oil money?
They rely on TV money and a 'sell before you buy' business plan.

No TV money and most teams would go bust.

The Prem League, or what would be left, would turn into the Championship (no offence intended).

Terrible idea for me. A nail in the coffin of football.

{Ed025's Note - great post that dags, and i agree with all of it mate, and not because im an everton supporter...but because im a football supporter..

In such a league would Arsenal be title contenders or religation fighters? Same for Liverpool Dortmund and many others?
Plus what next? Super teams in a world league London Paris NewYork Rio Tokyo? Anyone fancy buying a London kit with players name on who earns 5 million a week?

Great post Dags, spot on.

This 'super league' is an awful idea, agree with the ed too, as a football fan, it's bad for the game.

Ed,

Unfortunately, football supporters seem to be going in the same direction as the dinosaurs, soon to be extinct mate.

There will, of course, always be supporters, but, as a certain Mr Keane once said, they are the prawn sandwich brigade and Champagne Swiggers tucked up in Executive Boxes.

It would kill off the rest of premiership for sure. The problem is too many teams rely on the TV rights money to survive and if such a league were to happen all that vast sums of money would be taken away to fund the such a super league. There would be a lot of teams going into administration and it would have knock on effect as you go down the leagues. Also Football at that highest level will then be detached from it's roots as a working class game and its core fans. Your average fan would not be ale to jolly around Europe all the time to follow their team. It would just become even more corporate and ultimately would kill the spirit of football for good.

A lot of the problem is player wages have just got way out of proportion. I think one answer would be to centralise all Player contracts for all professional clubs with the Football associations of that Country and FIFA then to lay down one key ground rule that the total wage bill of a club must not exceed say 40% of that clubs annual income. If that was done across the board all clubs would be a lot more financially stable.

This would also mean getting rid of greedy third party agents if all player contracts were drawn up by the associations. There would be consistent rules set regarding the clauses and bonus that could be applied aswell as the condition on both the player side and club side as to when a contract could be terminated.

The top layers will still be well off because al the sponsership deals they could still earn addition to wages but it would not be bleeding the clubs dry so much and would also help keep ticket prices down if clubs did need so much income to support their age bill.

{Ed025's Note - top post that ryan..

Agree with most here, and what I said to ed02 prediction last week that this is coming whether we like it or not. If it does I will be handing my membership back and will go and support more grass roots clubs instead. I don't want away games consisting of return flights, and virtually no local derbies. IMO It will make the league much more franchised, make it easier for teams to play league games in Asia etc and take us down the NFL route. So here's hoping the super league is further away than we all fear.

How's it work with relegations and promotions? Or will there not be any? if your in it you're sorted if your not you're screwed

I've rifled through this site wondering what sparked this thread about the super league. I know it's been mentioned in the past but what's the renewed interest now? Forgive me if I missed the obvious but sports coverage in Canada is
1 hockey 2 hockey 3 baseball 4 hockey 5 basketball 6 - 10 hockey

Hi Canada,

I think somebody mentioned it earlier mate, so we just opened up the subject.

No football coverage in Canada at all?

We get the games here Dags, lots of them, but imagine if Sky and BT and Talk radio covered nothing but ice hockey, with baseball in the summer, and you've got the media here. 6 sports channels all owned by the same company and all showing hockey or baseball and not much else. Oh, and curling, which pushes football matches to midnight delayed broadcasts when it's on.

Superleague is an awful idea. I'm assuming from what I've read over the years that it would also be a way of the teams avoiding relegation as it would be on the North American model, with franchises as investments for sale. It I can't see the EU allowing North American style wage contracts and players rights ownership and market allocation, which would violate European anti trust laws IMHO.
