THE CENTRE OF THE PARK

Hi Everyone,

i hardly ever post but really enjoy reading every day.

I think the main problem with Arsenal is not being able to get a foothold in the middle of the park. We managed it with the combo of le coq and carol but now they are missing it has really messed up the balance of our midfield. Le coqs' reemergence power and tackling and massive improvement on the ball combined with Santi's skill and experience meant we could manage to dominate the centre somehow early on this year even though it's still not ideal.

We need a big dominator in there which le coq can do but we need someone to share it with him or challenge him for it. A fellani (when at everton) or a Wanayama type. It's a must next year. We need Santi and Le coq back fit to rebalance it.

Bless Flamini he battles hard and has given 100 percent since his return from Italy but him and Arteta are too slow now and just not good enough from game to game. Rambo can't be a dominator unfortunately unless he constantly on the ball and having one of his 1 in 6 games good days.

I love Rambo and always want him in but he needs the right players with him to let him just buzz around and get forward in and around the box. --- Maybe Elneny can bring something but we don't know enough yet and we'll see.

The problem is the middle of park. Defence is good. Kos, Merts and Gabs are good enough to win the league this year. Left back is strongest in the league with Nacho and Gibbs. Ballerina is doing his job very well. The last few games the gaols have dried up but we are Arsenal and they will come again and have never been the problem.

let's get the midfield balance back somehow Wenger and dominate in the middle like we didn't against Stoke or Southampton and many games lately. And Le Coq should have started against Southampton. I honestly have nothing against Flamini (apart from him leaving for Millan when we really needed him in his prime) but Le Coq is better.

Flamini is a liability. I love the guy, but footballing-wise, he isn't good enough. He's prone to too many mistakes, isn't dangerous when he has the ball, and has very bad positioning in the flow of play and on set-pieces. I'd like to see Elneny play rather than him.

Also, Bellerin. He's going to be a great player, no doubt. However, he's immature at the moment and had a howler against Southampton, giving the ball away too often.

2.) 04 Feb 2016 09:57:25
The main problems have been:
1) Playing Mertesacker in a high defensive line.
2) Having only one defensive midfield player, Coquelin, who was out injured for a period, with no cover.
3) Having too many central attacking midfield players and playing them out of position to accommodate them; Ramsey on the right wing, Cazorla or Ramsey in a defensive midfield role.
4) Lacking a world class striker.
Defensively, we need cover at RB and to replace Mertesacker.
Defensive midfield: Sign Wanyama. Giving us three options: Coquelin, Elneny and Wanyama.
5) Sign a world class forward.

3.) 04 Feb 2016 11:06:23
TheMessenger - I don't even like Flamini, never mind rate him as player. All he does is stand shouting and pointing. He is slow. His positional sense is useless, often defending way too deep, in line with the CB's, causing confusion and leaving a gap ahead of them. Thankfully, Coquelin is fit again and we have signed Elneny. Flamini and Arteta should never play for us again and should be released at the end of the season. I would rather play Ramsey and the Ox out of position, as DM players, rather than select either of these two players.

I posted yesterday about Red Cards. Too many unnecessary red cards ruin big games!
The spectacle and the occasion is just spoilt for everyone.
I do feel for the players but mainly I feel for the fans - who just want to see a fair game of football 11 vs 11.

Yes, by the letter of the law Szcze's offence was a Red. But this rule is wrong. It doesn't make sense. He denied Robben a goalscoring opportunity which was then restored via the award of a penalty. Szcze's foul wasn't deliberate or violent therefore a yellow card, a penalty and let's all get on with the game like adults, surely?

But no. the rules have gone mad. It hasn't always been this way has it? I'm youngish so do know what the rules were like through the 70's and 80's early 90's? Would a keeper have been sent off for this? Would Demichelis have seen red on Tuesday.

It's two fantastic Champions league ties between four great footballing teams just p****d on and undermind by the rules - not the refs so much - just the rules, they should be reviewed.

It this level it completely changes the everything about the game. It actually makes it boring and almost void in a sense. It's too harsh a punishment in cases like this and it's too big an advantage to be given for what is, after all, just a foul.

If it's cynical and blatant cheating. Red. If it's violent. Red. If it's just a foul then free kick/peno/ maybe a yellow depending on what the ref thinks. They need to stop acting like robots and be told to use some common sense and their own discretion - this would improve things no end and then the BEST refs (the fairest and the ones who understand the game) would come to the fore and end up reefing the big matches. They need to be allowed some leeway by the powers that be to use common sense and not feel pressured to get it exactly to the letter of the rulebook.

I watched the game at home on TV last night but had I been down at the Emirates (as I very nearly was) I'd have felt cheated and let down. I want to watch free flowing fair football not a training session for Bayern. Ridiculous. And then to have to listen superslickredknapp on Sky talking about how amazing Gotze and Kroos are compared to Wilshire because they made a million passes. Get a grip mate. They had an extra man. Of course the game was going to go that way. (Not taking anything away from the two German lads as players, because I think they are both class acts but let's judge them in a proper 11 vs 11 game) Oh I forgot we can't because it's rare we get one in the Champs League these days. pathetic. it really is.

Review the rule.

On a separate point
OZIL - we all know he is class. He needs confidence and really man managing now by Wenger - he also needs Ramsay back and pace running in behind for him to supply. Hope he has the character to pick himself up and get going properly wether it be this season or next because if he does he has all of the technical stuff and talent in abundance. Also, he needs penalty practice!

Interested to hear peoples opinions on the red cards and thanks for all the responses yesterday guys, seems like a lot of people feel a similar way.

Cheers,

Leegun!

Great post again Leegun and I'm certain that some refs have been man enough to make decisions before that have gone against what they call the letter of the law.

I didn't agree with Redknapp but we'll never know what will have happened if Szczesny hadn't clipped him.

I also understand that Kroos is a quality player but yes Jamie do me a favour, we are a quality passing side and could have done the same to them.

2.) Just like the City game another sending off killed the game effectivly as a contest and it was just a case of weather we could just hold out for a 1-0 Loss rather than 2-0, to give us a small chance in 2nd leg.

Unless it a proper red card type foul The penalty and yellow card is puishment enough in my book. The side is regaining the clear goal scoring chance by having the penalty.

Outside the box if its a genuine attempt at getting the ball like the and just misstimed like the City defender then a red card is unfair.

If it proper cyncial like a blatent pull back or coming through the back of the player then yes red.

3.) Good to hear your opinions guys. Thanks Jenny, I'm glad you agree about Redknapp spouting pointless stats about the game. It looked like we were going toe to toe with them before the Red. Such a shame. Hopefullt we can in Munich. win/lose or draw.

RED CARDS AND 'THE LETTER OF THE LAW'.

Not entirely Arsenal related but interested in peoples views on this.

Demichelis being sent off with a straight red for his foul on Messi last night when Messi was through on goal.

In my opinion - It's just too harsh! Firstly on the player. Then on his club and also on the fans.
Sendings off like this influence too much and too many times which way things go in big games!

I think if it's a genuine attempt to win the ball but a foul then it should be a yellow. The award of a penalty is enough without a sending off as well. The same if the attacking player is through on goal outside the box and there is a coming together (again a genuine attempt by the defending player to win the ball) then a yellow card and a free kick is fair.

However, if the attacking player gets through and is deliberately or cynically fouled then yes I can see the case for a straight red when a player just deliberately cheats. I.E. pulls someone back or just takes their legs! Fair enough. Stamp cheating out so straight Red.

But enough of players being sent off for just trying to make a challenge and timing it wrong (as long as the challenge isn't reckless or dangerous) - it should just be a free kick/penalty and a booking. It's ridiculous.
At elite level football it just makes games one sided and almost awards the game to the other side. It at least makes it almost impossible to lose for the side with the advantage.

The award of the penalty makes up for the loss of the goalscoring opportunity. Not a red card as well. It spoils games.

I must say last nights incident didn't spoil the game too much as City responded well but Barca we're always cruising from that point really.
I feel for the fans who want to see 11 vs 11.

I know it's not black and white but I only want to see players sent off when they really deserve to be. Not for soft things or when it's just a case of common sense.

I've seen these kind of decisions decide big games far too often over the past few years and I just hope there isn't one around the corner for us this season. or any other team for that matter. It's just doesn't seem fair or make sense.

p.s. I think the same should apply to goalkeepers. If they foul a striker and he's through on goal then fine. Yellow card, penalty. But not Red. It's too big a punishment. The game is just cheating itself.

p.p.s - C'mon Arsenal tonight. We live for nights like these. Big time football.

1.) If that was Ozil through on goal tonight and Dante brings him down I'd put a lot of money on your first words being "send him off"

2.) Yeah I agree too if it just mistimed then yellow card even if you are the last man, just cause a striker is through on goal does not mean a certin goal does it as there is still a keeper to beat.

I guess the issue then is defenders would be more willing to make the cynical pro fouls outside the box rather than making a genuine attempt to get the ball, it is a fine line.

3.) Been following this site for a while now but this is my first post.

@ Leegun, all the way to work this morning I was thinking to myself almost exactly the same as what you have written above, with particular emphasis on fact that reds ruin games and if a penalty is awarded then the goal scoring opp has not been lost so no need for an accompanying red.

I would go further and say, if its a handball on the line then give the yellow but award the goal (penalty goal). no need for a pen.

feeling oddly good about tonites game- think we can nick it by the odd goal.

4.) I am inclined for the most part to agree. The rule for fouls in the box resulting in penalties is all wrong. To be sent off for denying a clear goal scoring chance is ok when you are through on goal and are fouled outside the box but inside the box results in a penalty which is as clear a goal scoring opportunity as it gets. If it is cynical it should be red if not it should be a yellow and a penalty award. COYG

5.) I totally agreed with the referee's decision to flash red, but that was not penalty in my opinion. Initial contact was just outside the box and then Messi hit the ground inside the box. The foul should be given at the point of physical contact and not where the player falls.

I think I agree with what the law says. Demichelis was the last man, Messi was through on goal and would definitely had scored that had he not been fouled. And the player knows fully well that when coming from behind, close to the box, then you better make sure your tackle is spot on. Had he tried to barge Messi off the ball as he received the pass, then it would have been yellow and it would not have been a penalty because he was still some distance from the box

6.) Demichelis had 3 options:

1. Commit the foul a little earlier, get a yellow and avoid the penalty
2. Commit the foul exactly as he did, earn a red card and cause a penalty
3. Avoid the foul, run towards goal and hope the keeper saves it and be in a position to clear the ball should it be blocked. Even if Messi had scored, Citeh would still have had eleven men on the pitch and given themselves a better chance

7.) Wasn't a penalty. It ws outside the box. The referee was in no position to call it, where was the lines and to help him on the position?

Goal scoring opportunity is too subjective. A foul is a foul wherever it is IMHO. So if it's in the box, penalty kick should be sufficient. The severity of the foul, not the position, should indicate yellow, red, or no card.

How many games have we seen ruined, the fans and players insulted, by an over officious ref looking for a pat on the head from the UEFA or FIFA?

Yes guys, I totally agree - we're lacking on pace and someone or two running in behind the defence. So frustrating. Giroud couldn't hit the target once which is not good enough. Don't get me wrong he played decent and worked hard for the badge again as he always does so respect for that. However, again his hold up play is decent but he needs to mix it up. He needs to realise not to keep trying first time layoffs every time. Sometimes he should try and turn or take a touch and go sideways or just hold it a for a second or two so that the midfielders can support. He can't just keep playing tippy tappy layoffs in the general direction of the player who has just passed to him. He isn't a ping pong lever or just shouldn't be every time. Hopefully he'll sharpen this up. Maybe it is nerves or trying too hard.

Tonight is Big! We all know that, it's massive for our confidence in so many ways. The three points and top of the league is massive but even bigger is the confidence the lads will get if they beat Manchester United and send them back North with nothing and 17 points behind the top of the league - Arsenal!

C'mon Arsenal!

Great post Steve.r. Totally agree. we need pace to get in behind. If it just keeps bouncing of Giroud -Wenger should mix it up.

Got a feeling for Rosicky tonight too G62. He has been awesome this season especially when he has started. He will bring some much needed directness back into our game that we've missed with Rambo running off Ozil. Hope he starts or comes off the bench and opens them up.
