Use our rumours form to send us arsenal transfer rumours.

20 May 2018 20:53:27
Forgive me if I'm wrong but surely a manager decides where he needs to strengthen, the board decides whether funds are available, the scouts report on who is available and passes over to the chief negotiator to agree terms once the manager has chosen who he wants. Why is it that potential new signings are be touted without us having a manager?

Arteta may be an inspired choice although the jury will be out if appointed but I doubt whether the fans will have too much patience. He seems to be a Gazides choice but what does he know about football?

I agree with previous posts that this is an opportunity missed and typical of the real issues which is the ownership of the club which has no idea.

We are not looking for a manager as we know them we are looking for a head coach.
A bit like a head chef who isn't responsible for ordering or chosing the ingredients or chosing the menu just making sure that the food he and his team of chefs send our tastes and looks fantastic so the paying customers are happy and keep coming back.
Most head chefs want to run the kitchen from top to bottom hence our field of chioce is narrowed this time but if it goes well under our new system then it will be much less of a problem in future years attracting bigger name candidates.

{Ed025's Note - a tasty theory that G62..

Could be a recipe for success Ed025 mate :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - and they wont have to pay a lot of dough for him, it will be a piece of cake if you ask me mate..

20 May 2018 21:21:25
Then it's no wonder all the top notch candidates are not interested and we'll end up with a 'yes man'. Doesn't look like will be eating at the top table anytime soon.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - you may have to eat some humble pie if your wrong though lincs..

20 May 2018 22:49:32
It's a pie I'll happily eat, but for now I've lost my appetite.
I'm still stunned with this decision. I can understand our coach options dropping off, but how come we got to the "not even a coach yet" options? . Seriously.

Does any ed know the role Thierry Henry is going to be offered? I think its assistant manager.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It is not like that. They will talk to him tomorrow and see where the discussion goes.}

20 May 2018 16:21:16
Ed with you thinking arteta is a risk but you also believing that Mislintat and Sahelini are great additions, how do u vision Arsenal’s future?

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - They (the club) have made a mess of the recruitment of a new manager/head coach. I said some time back that the sensible approach was something else:

"On the plus side Carlo Ancelotti is available, lives in London and is interested in the position and can work within the revised management structure that Arsenal is putting in place. His age, Carlo is close to 60 now, might actually favour him as well as it may allow a succession plan with a future younger manager might be an attractive option. And that might open the door to an ex player (perhaps Henry, Bergkamp or Arteta or whoever to move in to a supporting role after gaining more experience."

And yes, Arteta is a risk. If it doesn't work out they will need to make a change and that is certainly not something they want.}

20 May 2018 16:39:02
I find it weird how they didn’t appoint Ancelotti as manager to be honest, but do you still trust Mislintat and the other guy to make the correct appointments on a limited budget?

Agree0 Disagree1

20 May 2018 16:42:12
There's seems to be a lot of interest in contact ex players for the job (henry, arteta, viera) and other functions in the club.
Ed, do you know what is the thought beneath this approachment? I doesn't seems necessarily as a skills or competencies orientated approach, as neither of them has a very outstanding CV until now.
It's only a matter of remaining options?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any interest in Viera. Options have been dropping off due to various reasons - as I have generally explained. There are other options but this is where the club has dug the hole so far.}

20 May 2018 18:09:07
Oh my. I was hopping for some board's enlightened reasons commanding this decisions that we don't know about.
It is a proper mess.

Hello eds and my fellow gooners!
I think the board's mentality has been questioned often. But if they are able to get a good backgroom staff (keeping in mind that Arteta is sealed and just waiting to happen) we might have some positivity around the club, the players and the people Henry ljunberg or even cazorla as suggested have seen Wenger's mistake and may play a role in galvanizing us at the back. SM will do the required transfers, he has got a good hold on the German network of football, (Leno, Max Meyer, Soyuncu, jorginho, kouilibaly, seriously, all talented players to some degree) . For the first time we are going towards a direction that has so many roads of possibilities, maybe losing out and division of fan base is a possibility but these are the best odds we have had in YEARS, it has been toxic for a while now tbh but whoever comes in is going to and will get the due support, it's upto him to shine or make mistakes and bundle into a pile of sorry figures. Time will tell. We are riding on the thin line if excitement and anxiety.

20 May 2018 15:12:21
Apparently a few years back when we beat City away it was Cazola who lead the revolt that forced Arsene to play Le Coq as DM that day.
Arsene admitted after that game that the change of tactics wasn't his idea and that the players had expressed their lack of desire to go out and get stuffed in the usual way.

Yes gunner62, I just think we shouldn't underestimate our squad even before the ball is kicked. Let's wait and watch, we've waited a few years for this haven't we, we should be excited rather than anxious, but that's just my humble opinion, what do you guys think?!

We were fed up with the groundhog season after season where one season of underachievement simply merged into the next and then the next almost seamlessly so what have we got to lose by being open to a different approach even if it's not what we were expecting.
To write something new off simply because it's different would be madness and with that approach we still be walking everywhere because the wheel was far to wacky an idea to even try out for some people.

20 May 2018 19:23:41

20 May 2018 13:19:33
As always lots of differing opinions and with Wenger leaving there's definitely going to be a lot of variations in them.

I personally am chuffed he's called it a day and last season would have been even better. It was good to see the out pour of appreciation and love for the guy at the Burnley game, especially from those fans that had finally had enough and spoke with their feet rather than banners and planes.

So change is and has been happening and I've long voiced my dislike of Silent Stan because of the mediocre records of his American clubs where winning isn't the be all.

But the change has been more evident since he sent his son Josh, I think that's his name, over to sort out this change and with 3 new guys in top posts, Wenger gone and a lot of his back room staff out too, then maybe we are underestimating what Josh wants to achieve and not his dad.

I know a lot have concerns about Arteta because that really is a leap into the unknown but with the positive stuff that's been happening then I'm going with the flow because he would have a great team behind him.

The seasons are pretty much done across Europe so all players and managers can't yet be discounted so let's just wait and see.

Lastly, what did Leicester do the season before they won the League and what did Chelsea do last time around before they won the league.

As always we want the club to be positive yet some many fans remain negative, we'll be 6th, will we challenge for the title etc.

Let's see who comes in, players, managers, back room staff and see where we go from there.

It really is a new dawn and something to be excited about.

Totally agree Stoner mate, brilliant post.
We are swapping what so obviously wasn't working for the unknown which may or may not work out to be better, but at least we are trying to do something about our situation now and I don't see how that can possibly be a bad thing.
If your car won't start and kicking the tyres hasn't helped for 14 consecutive mornings can it to realy hurt to pop the bonnet and take a look at what else it might be that's stopping it working ?

20 May 2018 13:58:11
Spot on stoner. Like I said in another post, football is not an exact science and a good vibe is better than a world class player. For me with tha Arteta talk it isn’t so much as if he can do the job but the fact I can see a divide fan base. We need to hit the ground running.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 14:47:59
If you want people get behind you then you have to offer them a reason to do so, the more often you disappoint them the more of an ask it is to back the same old plan again and again.
So far nether the new coach or the Sven men have let anyone down so why not give them the benefit of the doubt and back them at least until they give you a reason not to.

Last season it was plain to see why we were going to struggle because all the old problems were still there so how could things possibly improve things are going to be different next season whether they will be better or not nobody knows but just the possibility is exciting for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 07:22:52
So finally all roads leads to Arteta.
Mixed feelings. First I was pissed off, but then I got sad. The feeling of a unique opportunity wasted.
They talk about a catalyst for a change, but If we're to believe latest rumours, everything seems the same: a coach open to work under restrictions, not enough money for needed transfers, the incapacity to tied up our best players and even the need to sale our player of the season to adress financial problems, a team not ready to win but prepared to fight for top 4, and so on.
I want to be wrong on my view about this decision, but I just don't see it.
Having said that, I'm getting behind the team to support it as it's my duty as fan.
Just hoping for the best, and wishing good luck to Mikel and everyone involved in the new process.

Strange how we all see things so differently, Personally I'm full of hope for next season and think we will sign players for the positions we are weak in for the first time in years.
I'm confident we will get 2 CBs and at least 1 DM.
I. think Ramsey will go but if he does that we will replace him with another attacking midfielder.
Maybe I'm wrong but after so many poor summers in the transfermarket where we always failed to adress our weaknesses but instead seemed to add more of what we already had plenty of I just don't see how we can be any worse off and instead look forward to something new where the season ahead is not totally predictable.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 09:53:51
Indeed 62, we all have different views and opinions and are all welcome

I just can’t see any improvement if we won’t spend decent money to compete, we can’t keep hoping when such a low budget is on the table.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 09:58:57
We will buy but I see it being smart signings on budget. Nothing to worry man city. Battle for 4th again imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 10:14:47
Maybe just maybe the Sven mens knowledge of German football will uncork a few gems much like Arsenes knowledge of the French market did all those years ago.
Plus maybe we are prepared to spend more than is being reported.
We've been doing the same things repeatedly for years and hoping in vain for a different outcome each season and now we are trying something different I don't really see how we can be any worse off.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 10:25:50
Probably not worse off but 6th isn’t any great shakes, look at the 5 above us, only Spuds are as careful with spending the rest we just won’t get near.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 11:13:41
I agree totally Banbury mate 6th place miles behind top 5 is pretty poor for a club like Arsenal and in my opinion we might as well be 10th.
If we consider City Utd Liverpool Spurs Chelsea Arsenal as a mini league then no matter how well everyone of the teams in it play next season only one team can be champions and only another 3 can make up the top 4 and two teams no matter how well everyone plays has to drop into the europa league places.
Next season for me is not so much where but how we do.
If we are still out of the top 4 but still in the hunt with 2 games to go that's got to be a huge improvement on this season when with a quater of the season still to go we where completely out of top 4 let alone the title.
If we don't get thrashed by anyone all next season that for me will be improvement too.
we won't go from last seasons total surrender to competing to be premier league champions in one season I'm absolutely sure of that but if we actually compete in all 38 games next season that will be a first in over a decade and I will be over the moon Jim, over the moon:-)

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 11:37:28
Yep fair shout mate, I wouldn’t disagree with any of that.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 12:31:14
I think you have a point g62, and I can see where your optimism came from.
Maybe we can do better that we do this season and progressively achieve our goals, but personally I want a big title now: something to redeem our recent miseries.
You can say there's no chance of that right now, but precisely to create this chance is the task as a club we was called.
The only way to that, in my view, is through a experienced an successful coach. We're in the best of the position to look for that but we letting the train away.
As things stand, very early to me to say "in Sven we trust", but I'm totally open, and hopeful, to be told "I told you". Again, I just don't see it at the moment.

Agree1 Disagree0

20 May 2018 12:58:04
Everyone did say be careful what you wish for as we won’t attract a top top coach better than Wenger and we don’t have funds. Not saying Wenger shouldn’t have gone but the venom behind getting him out for years without truly realising what we had as well as what we could attract and spend is funny in a way.
We are where we are but if we thought we would get a Pep and start buying big big players that Chelsea / City or PSG are after then we were clearly deluded. We will have the same type of 4th place budget and we need to get smart and lucky to compete. If the end result of pushing Wenger out is Arteta - then that’s our guy and I will back him and hope 100% of the fans do. If we push him out - who are we going to get?
The issue is the board and the super rich clubs with non football spending powers.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 13:28:05
This is my take Fidelio mate.
If Arsene wanted player A and scouts advised Player B was better there was no question we went for A every time.
Now the job is being devided up and Sven will be responsible for recruitment and the new coach performances and results.
If the new coach wants player A and Sven player B then player B gets signed because that's Svens Job and what he's here to do.
Would Klopp Conte Mourinho work like this? I'm not sure they would so we need to find someone who will.
Can one man do everything brilliantly? Or is it better for a horses for courses approach where you have small team of people who all do what they do best sharing the role Arsene had?
The obvious potential problem is conflict and disagreement within the management team so there has to be a top dog who calls the shots somewhere and the other members of the management team have to accept this.
I don't think Jose or Jurgen would be willing but some others might be happy to work like this and be free to get on with concentrating on what they enjoy the footballing side of things.
Just my take :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 13:42:50
62 - plus work with tiny budget and a defence that needs rebuilding plus midfield and squad.

We are a 4th rAte club fishing for a 4th place manager

Let's see what next season brings SY mate, if we go a whole season without getting stuffed at Anfield Old Trafford the Etihad or the Bridge but still miss out on top 4 then I could be argued we are on the right track.
Can anyone remember the last season where absolutely nobody thrashed us in 38 games? Or the last time we went a whole season without at least one of the other big clubs making us look like kids against men?
7 0 at the bridge 8 2 old Trafford and regular maullings at Anfield, it would be nice to watch games siting on the sofa rather than hiding behind it again:-) .

I'm all on board with the new structure mate, a clear way forward! It's Arteta's appointment which worry me. As you say mate, some wouldn't work under this condition, but clearly Arteta wasn't the only one available. Why not Ancelotti? Who is a proved winner and, as ed002 said, has worked successfully under this kind of structure?
To give the job to a rookie in this historical times seems very odd to me. As I said before, look's like a childish decision based on the expectations of a fairy tale.
Maybe I'm arrogant claiming a mistake from people vastly more capacitated than me, but all this seems to me, like we say in spanish, a case of "gatopardismo": everything must change in order to remain the same.
Once again, I'm really hope to be wrong.

The Acelloti question is a very fair one mate and if I'm honest I can't think of an answer to it, not like me I know :-)
There must be a reason but as an outsider looking in it's difficult to think of a good one.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 May 2018 16:00:45
It is a very underwhelming appointment. But it can't be about money. There is no way gazidis would put his head on the line with such an appointment. Arteta has to have something. If he brings in a couple of centre halfs and a defensive mid, corrects the balance of attacking and defending and adds a bit of fight in the players then we will be in the top 4 next season.
