How's he getting on at Swansea?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it is still early days but he has them stabilised and competitive in the Championship. Miracle in itself considering the club sold its entire defence in the summer!}

22 Jan 2019 14:18:30
Yeh I thought they were mental over the summer, good he's been able to stabalise them and get visible results, because you portray his vision as long term and you're not often afforded much time over here!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - that is why he is best at a club like Swansea, who are normally known for patience and are in such a dire position they have little choice but to give him time.}

22 Jan 2019 17:39:07
I like everything I've ever read about him and he's definitely done it the hard way without the benefits of a high profile playing career to promote himself with.
Graham Potter and Darren Moore are the two championship managers I've been cheering on all season, it would be brilliant to see both quietly go about their jobs and get into the premier league and then the europa league with Swansea and WBA, big ask but since Leicester won the title everything and anything really is possible in football.

Considering we've now got Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal seem to struggling to get this Suarez deal over the line. I know there's more to it than one guy but ex Barcelona and all that, Mr negotiator and force to be reckoned with? 🤔 we still take an age to get deals done!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

21 Jan 2019 23:27:29
Excellent point Glen, it's only January but an early contender for post of the year I'd say!
Well I'm genuinely impressed anyway mate:-)
Anyone got a decent counter argument for why Raul is all he's been cracked up to be?

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 07:12:20
We’ve been tight forever. Leaving deals to last minute to save money ( wages ) . That plus our wage bill and lack of funds plus rubbish show of a board makes it tricky.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 08:44:05
Other clubs can take ages too, rumours always seem to rumble on for weeks. we do stand out as particularly Bad though, especially our way bellow the asking price offers. but I'd imagine it's like trying to buy a house, generally the bloody lawyers fault! He finds an query sends it back, but takes a week doing it, because he had to go out for a cigarette, their lawyers on holiday and he's got someone covering whos not up to date on it all, he's going to have to read it and get back to you in a couple weeks, by which time the original guys back, but he's quite a few things to catch up on, he will try and get to you as soon as possible.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 09:04:15
Cheers G62. Perhaps he's too old school for the job now hence leaving Barcelona? There are many people in football nowadays who won't roll over to the demands of the big name agents and directors! All i have seen since he joined Arsenal is that he's causing trouble than good but hopefully he can get this deal done. Ornstein is reporting that the deal isn't even close so i'm not confident.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 14:19:38
What trouble have you seen he's caused Glen?

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 15:04:08
It all might have something to do with ramsey, suarez and Rodriguez/ a n other triangle. i'm sure it will all become clear.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 15:36:42
I like Rodders but do we need him for half season? I'd be more inclined to develop from within our own camp than sign a short term statement player. If JR wants to commit that would be different all together but for 5 months it hardly seems worth bothering, now if he was a DM or CB I could see some sense in it.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 16:54:13
Well he came in to the club as head of football relations but from reports, what he really wants is to be technical director. Again a lot of reports stating that some of things he's said and done were a key factor in Mislintats decision to leave so soon. Speculation I know but when you look at various news articles it doesn't really point to anything positive. He's Arsenals 'bigwig' when it comes to transfers and contract negotiations but even that still seems to be a struggle. What does he expect to achieve with no money to work with, other than that generated by the club minus overheads?

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 17:25:04
I keep hearing people complaining about the clubs self sustaining policy but what's the alternative,
Where else would the money come from?
Going into debt is unthinkable so the only other alternative is Stan putting his money in but he's a business man and would want to see a return on any investment he personally funded not watch them run down their contracts in order to either hold the club to ransom for extionate wages beyond their talent or watch them leave Arsenal empty haned as a free agent for mega bucks elsewhere.
If I was Stan and it was my money I'd want to see it as investment not another indulgence as almost all spending has been over our recent history.
If we went on Dragons Den with our track record we'd probably set an all time record for the most Dragons out in the first 30 seconds :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 19:54:38
The self sustainable model is a problem though G if you want to compele with the elite teams in world football. To not have a penny of investment in 10 years imo is an absolute disgrace, and I reckon I can count on 1 hand how many Arsenal’s games he’s been too since I started supporting them.

Kroenke has invested $1.6 billion to help pay for the new Rams stadium, yet the other club he owns had to pay for the emirates over 10 years out of the funds that the club generated. He has no interest in football and absolutely no interest in how successful we are and it’s embarassing to say that owns the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jan 2019 20:55:15
I don't think it's fair to say no investment in 10 years Glen Lacasette Pea Ozil Sanchez Xhaka Mustafi were 230 millions worth of investment, the problem is Sanchez and Ozil returned nothing and Xhaka and Mustafi will leave at a huge loss plus Pea and Lacasette are no spring chickens so it's soon or never to see a return on those two who we simply can't afford to lose.
Liverpool received for Suarez and Coutinho £220 million from what a 40 to 50 million investment?
We need to invest the next £230 million much much more wisely to attract more positive investment.
We are not skint but we aren't anywhere near rich enough to just write off 100s of millions in fees and wages without it affecting future confidence in more investment.
We spent and financially man managed very very poorly over the last 10 years which is where our problems now come from.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jan 2019 11:07:34
Gunner, you need to read the article published by the BBC last week mate. Arsenal are the only club in the top 4 English leagues to not receive a penny of investment from the club owners in the last decade. Those transfers were all funded by the clubs income and that’s the way we work as a club. None of that 230 million was invested by Kroenke mate.

Unfortunate for Bellerin missing the rest of the season. I wonder if the pitch has anything at all to do with so many ACL injuries. It may have nothing to do with it all all but we seem to get more of them injuries than our fair share. Sounds a horrible type of injury.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed0333's Note - the ACL is no fun mate 6-9 months at least. Hopefully he’ll be back for preseason.

21 Jan 2019 15:30:02
Does the fact that mislintat is going and probably edu coming in, mean with sanllehi, edu and brexit mean we are chasing more south American targets?

Believable0 Unbelievable2

21 Jan 2019 17:37:58
I don’t think it works like that Steve. Such a shame really if Guendouzi was one of his then we have effed up seriously 😐.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 18:13:15
Turned out to be true then, that's bad news but what can we do?
He did a fantastic job and whatever his reasons for leaving I wish him well and thank him for what he brought to the club in his short 14 month stay, I'm not sure what we paid him but it was probably our best value for money signing for over a decade.
Onwards and upwards is the only way and who knows maybe Dick has a few of his own targets he might get a chance to explore now?

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 18:45:37
We don’t know if he did a fantastic job really because we have not been given the chance of seeing the fruits of his labour. Obviously a man of principles good luck to the guy.

21 Jan 2019 19:00:21
Sano my thought process being sanllehi was involved with the process of getting south americans to Barcelona and edu is technical director for brazil having been with, i believe corrintians, let me off if i'm wrong. I just wonder wether we are shifting focus, with the prospect of work permit limitations being removed. I may be completely off the scent.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 19:13:08
From what I've read he's responsible for all our new players since he took over starting with Pea, so in my book Pea Torreira and Guendouzi alone mean he did a fantastic job in just 2 windows, I think in recent years only Sanchez has made as positive effect as those 3 have sine arriving.

21 Jan 2019 19:19:42
Sorry Steve that was in regards to the brexit bit! I haven’t been watching news but didn’t work out how brexit would attribute to that 👍.

21 Jan 2019 19:46:49
It's a decent theory Steve and potentially an exciting one if we can unearth some young Sanchez Suarez and Aguero types at fees we can offord.
I do think there is an almost limitless supply of fantastic untapped top quality talent out there in this big wide world and Kante and Mahrez at a combined fee of 5.5 million are prime examples of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 22:21:08
Kante and Mahrez where both born in France 62, no where near South America. 🤔.

Not sure if already covered but i thought our formation really worked well at the weekend. Not always a big fan of the 4-4-2 "diamond" formation but i thought it best matched the players we have. It allows us to play 3 in central midfield with Torreira and Guendouzi adding the energy, and which i thought really helped protect the back 4, and helped snuff out Chelsea's midfield. Ramsey worked well in the hole, adding more energy and some defensive cover when required, but ultimately in the team to support the front 2. Also, going forward, you could easily see Ozil or Miti playing in that position instead of Ramsey, as having the extra protection of 3 midfielders may help Ozil, allowing him to concentrate more on supporting our attack, without the pressure to fully engage in our defense. Finally, this formation allows us to play both Lacca and Aubey, with both being able to play more central, where they do the most damage (oh and it also prevents us having to play Iwobi, who was again extremely poor when he came on) . A few issues with the formation, we were still very narrow, especially in defense, and teams with wingers will cause problems, but overall, i thought it was a case of a manager playing a style that suited the resources at hand, rather than trying to "shoe-horn" a favoured system onto players that don't fit. Finally, was really pleased with the great "home" reception for Giroud, (and he responded very well to the applause at the end of the game, doing a full lap of the ground! ) .

I think, Dick changes team and formation to suit. I only think he will use three or four at back when he thinks it suits, or he thinks the players he has available suits. I thought we played far too narrow at the back but on saturday against a team with no focal point up front it worked a treat. The only scary thing for me on saturday was allowing their tricky players into the box before trying to tackle when a tackle outside the box was on, especially by the unfortunate Bellerin but again it may have been a tactic.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 18:23:13
Dick does seem more flexible and open to taking into consideration who we are playing before deciding his own plan of action, which I welcome.
I've always believed If your a dominant team like Barcelona and The invincibles were or City and Liverpool now then you should stick to what your brilliant at and let your opponents worry about tactics but if your playing a team at your own. level or higher then good tactics or best of all tactics that catch your opponents out can and do make all the difference to your chances of success.
It's no good us going to City in a couple of weeks time and playing the same way we line up with Cardiff at home a few days earlier.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 18:35:29
Never been a massive fan of the 3 at the back, which in my book means your playing 5 defenders, not something i want to pay and watch! I would like to see the stats on goals conceded with 3 CB's versus the flat back 4. I remember when Wenger first switched to 3 it worked well, but i would wager its made no real difference since. Therefore give me a choice between adding say Mustafi and having to remove either Guendouzi or Ramsey to compensate, or sticking to a back 4, I would take the later all day long. However, i do understand that we will change our tactics depending on the opponents, and i probably wouldn't expect us to play that way against say, Palace, as you would get exposed down the flanks. However, for me, you have to always play your strongest team with your best players in their preferred position. If that means playing 2 up front, with both playing central, and no-one having to play as a Left Forward instead to enable us to play the "correct" 3-4-3 formation, then so be it.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 20:37:38
The thing with all formations, they have their strengths and weaknesses, being able to change and adapt is massive. Dick is a coach who likes to study and coach, i think he is adaptable to different situations and expects his team to be as well. Some of our players look upto it, some don't and that's where we will see the changes in the coming windows.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Jan 2019 13:14:31
You have to feel for Emery, having lost Holding and Welbeck to season ending injuries, now Bellerin looks likely to add a third player to the list.
The interesting thing is that the 5 players brought in by Emery have been relatively injury free.
I hope we manage to sign a couple of players during what's left of the current window. Defensively, we have lost Holding and probably Bellerin, but we have Koscielny back fit and Mavropanos back in training. We also Have Maitland-Niles, Lichtsteiner and Jenkinson for the RB slot. Welbeck is more of a problem as he could fill in across the front three,

I think Denis Suarez will be it I'm afraid. He can play either wing. Hopefully he will be useful.
