I am always doubtful of us signing anyone that we are linked with through the media. We usually hunt in the bargain bins a few days before the window ends.

The boss has recently came out and stated that we’re looking at 3/ 4 “expensive” signings for now.

If you take this post like a “football manager” career however, on who is semi-realistic, and would improve our squad, these are the players I would be demanding the club would sign.

Saha and Tierney. Both players are linked and I don’t really need to add much here.

After the performance from the Bayern game (and pretty much every performance since he’s signed) we need a replacement for Mustafi. My ideal candidate would be Alderweireld. He has a release clause of £25m until July 25th.

Since we’ve lost Ramsey, and that I don’t rate Xhaka highly, I would like us to go after a central midfielder to slot straight into the starting 11. Ruben Neves would be my main target.

Agree with all the Gothenburg mate, and while we were getting Neves I'd nick Connor Coady too, looks an excellent no fuss CB who is extremely comfortable on the ball to me, a Harry Maguire type signing waiting to be picked up by someone in my opinion.
We've got to spot the Maguires and Van brilliant type players when they are at Hull and Celtic not wait until they've already become established at Leicester and Southampton.

With Giroud's injury we need to sign someone. I was in the camp that wanted another striker regardless, but now even more so. My ideal signing would be Cavani, but if we can't get him, then who?

Read about circi, remy, Wellbeck. All not good enough. One man who might be available, and could be a bargain would be Torres.

Yep you heard me right! I think he's been very poor at chavski, but his form at Liverpool was outstanding, which at that time justified his 50m fee.

In retrospect that was a lot of pressure for a young player to perform. I don't believe that he was given a fair crack at the first team in chavski, his confidence took a knock and he suffered. But you don't go from being one of the best strikers in Europe to a laughing stock.

What Torres needs is a manager who will believe in him. Someone who will stand by him if things don't go right. If that were to happen, I believe that he would recover his Liverpool form. And wenger has been known for those traits.

I for one would take a gamble on him. He'd have a fresh start with new fans. The mistakes he has made will be lessons learned.

Gothenburg_Gooner

{Ed001's Note - just to point out, Torres lost the blistering acceleration he once had, which enabled him to get space. That is why he looks poor, that is why he was poor in his last few months at Liverpool. He will never be the same player he was, you don't get back acceleration once you lose it.}

1.) Are you genuinely suggesting that we should get Torres over Remy or Cerci, or anyone for that matter?

Are you feeling alright?

2.) 26 Aug 2014 13:12:27
Completely agree about his acceleration, but he also lost his finishing. He could be the poacher we've missed since wrighty

{Ed001's Note - because he needed time to get to the ball and take the shot. Without acceleration to give him space, he finds a defender on him when he has the ball. He is not a poacher, it is not his game.}

3.) Torres is absolutely hopeless. Pace gone, poor finishing, and no sense of space. Always looks completely surprised by where the ball is. I don't think Welbeck would be a bad option, less keen on Remy and think Cavani is overpriced for what he offers. Notwithstanding his volatility, I'm surprised we let Balotelli go to the dippers, especially for the bugger all price of £16m.

4.) 26 Aug 2014 17:02:09
He's playing 40 games a season since he was 17. that's 4-6 years before most strikers are first team players. His legs are gone. I still have a real fondness for Torres and would take him for 5m and 70k a week. His exp is tremendous.

I'm hoping the same will ring true for Cesc(finished by 30) so he doesn't prove to be Wengers greatest failing. fingers crossed.

5.) 27 Aug 2014 02:49:37
Put it this way, I wouldn't pay £20m for him, but as sheeny said, at a cut price deal he would be a bargain. Proven at all levels. Would just need to park himself in the box and let our midfielders supply to him.

In terms of pace, yes he has lost a lot, but I'd assume he would be quicker than what we have.

Just arrived in uk for a holiday. Question for the eds.

I made a couple of posts in the past couple of days. One which analysied how far we have come, and what I believed could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

Yet none of my posts were published. Checked back and all that was accepted was a bunch of trolling posts a out an "in crowd".

Thought this was a site for arsenal banter and rumours?

Gothenburg_Gooner

{Ed025's Note - it is mate, sometimes things get sidetracked and off the subject, but were all good pals here GG, i never seen your post though, but im not the only ed that does this page and maybe one of the others thought it may have been inappropriate or repetitive...if you re-post it i will certainly have a look at it and consider posting it fella..

I have been lurking on this site since the beginning when football rumours branched out the individual teams.

Firstly a big thanks to the Ed's who make the site what it is and their knowledge and patience.

My first post unfortunately will be a controversial one.

I was watching the Invincibles documentary and it brought back some great memories, but shows the fall from grace that we have had since then. Mostly due to our top players going for a quick increase in salary/immediate titles (bought through money rather than hard work and determination).

However I believe we are very close to the success of previous years. There are two main areas that we need to strengthen and we will compete, not only with the Chelski's and Man s**ty's, but with everyone in Europe.

We need a new DMF and a striker.

I'm going to be very frank, with the talk of Wilshere becoming our DMF, I believe we will struggle in the premier league this season. We have majorly strengthened our squad with recent signings, but Jack isn't made for that role and was cause the team to lose games through cards/suspensions. I have actually been unimpressed with Jack for the past few seasons. He shows signs of world class talent, then gives the ball away to the opposition, or makes clumsy challenges or aggressive challenges that show his lack of composure and ability to handle pressure. When he burst onto the scene, I truly thought we had a star footballer that would be the best in the world one day. So where do I see him fitting in? I believe he should be competition for Ozil, and giving Ozil a rest when needed.

Up front we need a world class finisher. I am a big fan of Giroud and everything he brings to the team, but he is not the world class player to lead this team to glory. If you were to look around the league, where would you see Giroud fitting in at United, Chelsea, City? I don't think he would get a look in at any of those clubs. And across Europe at Barca, Real, Bayern, PSG, Juve. could you see him starting above any of their current strikers? His goal scoring record last season was good, but he also missed a lot of chances that a world class striker would have put away.

The reason I have been so critical is because it frustrates me when people (myself included) obsess over potential signings (Khedira to name one) then when it looks like it won't come to fruition, list reasons why we are glad that we never signed said player. Then name current members of the squad who could do the role anyway.

We get so worked up about great players being linked is because we know we are SO close to major success. It only takes a few new faces to come into the club for the dream of a world class Arsenal team to actually become a reality.

With a true DMF and a world class striker, I firmly believe that we will not only win the premier league, but at a canter. We could also do some major damage in the champions league, if not go on to win that too.

Gothenburg_Gooner

{Ed007's Note - Welcome aboard, buddy.}

1.) In my opinion not controversial at all. Totally agree on the wilshere thing. defo not suited for a DM role for a whole plethora of reasons. And while I like giroud as well, he's also not good enough to be our main man (though a DM is needed more). Maybe the part I disagree with is the win it at a canter part and the champ league part :p you're underestimating the opposition.

2.) 25 Jul 2014 21:34:38
Welcome Goth,

Good post matey.

3.) 25 Jul 2014 21:37:32
The reason I deemed it controversial is because Wilshere is a "proper gooner". Someone who has came through that you really want to be a world beater. It would be easier to criticise a foreign player than one of our own.

In terms of at a canter, I firmly believe that. The opposition is good, but we were the team to beat for a good part of last season. With the signing of Sanchez only makes us stronger. Add two more world class players and we'll be unplayable. The beauty of arsenal is that we have nurtured our talent for a long time. So the whole squad plays as one. We might not have the depth of city, but we're not a team of individuals.

Never claimed to be ITK mick. Stan has enough connections in football though to give him a heads up.

I was just sharing the info for the people not on twitter.

I agree that some of the criticism of Giroud has been out of order. He is a good striker, scoring 22 goals last term in all competitions.

However he scored 16 in the league. That is not enough to be classed as the main striker for a top team. We were in every competition last season, with the amount of chances we create, 22 goals is an "ok" contribution.

I think the whole "drama" regarding the DM role may work out in our favour. With Khedira seeminly pinned on for so long, attention was moved elsewhere when his wages became an issue. Other targets been inquired about would soften Khedira up if we were to go in again for him, lowering the wage demand and hopefully the transfer value if Real want to get rid of him.

This would free up more money for Reus to come in.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is majorly far-fetched that we were to obtain both players. But not impossible.
