is there any truth that Arsenal are close to signing josip drmic? just curious as looks a good player but rumoured for £8 and at 21 would be a good player, rather he joined lfc like

Roland-dinho

{Ed002's Note - I was not aware of any Arsenal interest in Drmic, but if Lothar Matthäus is correct then some level of discussion has happened between the clubs and representatives of the player. Certainly Dortmund, Napoli, Everton and Hertha Berlin have been looking at the player recently. Whether or not he is first team material right now, we can only wait to see.}

1.) Matthaus has quite the reputation might I add. He claims he called lewandoski and that guy Dortmund signed before most people had heard. Sounds promising (assuming this is someone we want to sign and will add quality to our squad)

2.) And £8 is a bargin!

Lfc fan and always liked Arsenal. maybe it's the nice football more likely it's the tight fitted kits, but curious.

Start of season thought city were nailed on to win title but seeing as they and every other team want to throw it away, if Arsenal don't win the league this season is wenger's time up?

Not jumping on the bandwagon and but have a good shot of winning the title. City are terribly inconsistent and think Leicester's position shows title is there for who wants it most.

Chelsea have fallen apart, lfc are again 'in transition', city play when they can be bothered, LVG manages about as good as he handles the press, whilst Leicester and Spurs seem to be taking advantage.

Personally think you have a squad of top players and just need to buy 1-2 players to grab the title. but don't see it happening.

Hi Roland,
Whatever happens, Wenger is definitely hanging up his boots at the end of next season.
Let's hope its with a league title under his belt mate.

Personally if any club can overtake chelsea reckon it's you lot. But do you think you can and if so who could you realistically get to do so?

You've got a great team and money, but IMO:
- best manager in the BPL? Mourinho
- best player? hazard
- best defence? Chelsea
- best midfield? Chelsea
- best striker? Costa
- best squad? Again probably chelsea

But you have some great players spread around the park but think you may need 3/4 to overtake them.

For me, realistically-ish: Cech, Schneiderlin, higuain (but he is signing for lfc - fingers crossed and vodka downed), & pushing it a bit hummels.

1.) 19 May 2015 20:08:54
Are you a Chelsea supporter by any chance? Lol.

I agree with your assessment.
Cech, Schneiderlin and Higuain would certainly push us up another level.

2.) 19 May 2015 20:27:21
Genuine lfc fan but can't ignore their quality. Hate to see it and more to say it but have got a great set up and strolled to this seasons title

3.) 19 May 2015 21:21:44
I know Roland, was only kidding mate.

Hate to say it, but they are the benchmark.

Finish above them and you win the league.

4.) 19 May 2015 22:08:52
imo chelseas squad is remarkably weak. 1st team is obviously very strong, but they didn't change the team much for a reason and were very lucky with injuries. if they were hit with a couple injuries i think they would really suffer.
def:
1st: terry, ivanovic, aspilicueta, cahil
reserve: zouma, luis, ake, christensen
mid
1st: hazard, fab, oscar, willian, matic
reserve: mikel, cuadrado, loftus-cheek, brown, baker
attack:
1st: costa
reserve:drogba, remy, solanke

5.) 19 May 2015 22:24:36
Our midfield is better than theirs

6.) 19 May 2015 23:50:21
SrZ sags, but still reckon you've got the best chance to de-throne them! And although think he should have won more over the past 10 years, would love to see Wenger leave on a league title. Class act, could give BR a tip or ten

As for a weak second team....remy, Oscar, caudrado, Cech, Zouma, Luis, Ramirez aren't bad players....that's not mentioning mikel!

7.) 20 May 2015 05:40:28
Aguero best ST in league for me

On the whole debate on the board vs wenger a friend made a good point. Basically a lot of fans complain about funds being spent but in the last few seasons arsenal have bought big just not in the right places. So the question asked was "if Wengers was manager of Real Madrid would they win the CL?"

Tbh I don't think they would, obviously have a good chance due to their players but winning it isn't just that it is tactics as well. The best team doesn't always win/reach the final look at Liverpool, Chelsea (sorry), inter, dortmund, & athletico madrid - all of them were no where near the best teams but either won or got to the final through managers getting the most out of players and tactics.

Could argue Wenger at one point did have the best team in the world (the invincibles) and still didn't win it (admittedly did get to a final). Always loved watching arsenal but been years since I've thought of them as a potential CL winning side. his status as a legend and what he has done for the club are obvious, but if you want to win leagues and the CL personally think you need a new manager to start with.

Roland-dinho

1.) 02 Dec 2014 14:09:24
Agree with all of that. Good post

2.) 02 Dec 2014 17:11:29
We played the majority of that final with 10 men for starters and if Champions League winning sides are buying at Harrods whilst we're buying from Lidl's what realistically do you expect.

I know the Wenger out gang love all this kind of stuff but try and at least put it into an honest perspective.

3.) 02 Dec 2014 18:07:55
Well tbf he has been there for 18 years and got to the final once, although going down to 10 men is unlucky it doesn't change the result or that he hasn't gotten close to one since.

As for budget that should be taken into account but Mourinho won the CL twice, with Porto and Inter Milan - hardly the big spenders of the competition. Klopp has won 2 league titles with a similar budget whilst losing his best players to his league rival who has a much larger financial backing and got to a final humbling madrid along the way. Simeone won the league competing against the two most expensive sides in world football (with the two best players the world has probably ever seen) and got to the CL final. I respect Wenger for what he has done for your club and his consistency but the talk about the money he has to spend is just an excuse - managers who have been more adaptable to their situations and identified weaknesses have won with smaller budgets then him.

Respect your opinion but I don't think my view is too unrealistic tbf. in 18 years he has won 3 league titles (last one over a decade ago) and 0 CL titles yet still hasn't shown any signs of changing his approach or buying the players it is obvious to everyone you have needed for years (DM, GK, CB). To put it in perspective Wenger has managed for 18 years won 3 league titles (a few fa cups tbf) ferguson managed 25 years and won 13 titles & 2 CL - so if wenger won every title for the next 7 years and won the CL twice he would still have won less titles then Ferguson did in that same time.

Think a new manager could come in and with a few key signings make Arsenal compete for everything.

4.) 02 Dec 2014 18:46:31
Klopp won 2 league titles before selling his best players to Bayern.

This season where are they having lost their best players.

What did Porto or Milan win with those quality teams after Mourinho left.

Have any of them maintained there positions in their respective leagues or did they drop like stones after losing their manager and best players.

Will Simeone win la Liga without Costa. Already a 23 goal difference between them and Madrid.

5.) 02 Dec 2014 19:45:48
Sahin voted got voted bundesliga player of the season - sold him won the league. Kagawa got in the XI of the season sold him won the league. Fair enough this season isn't going well but has literally lost a star player every season for 4 seasons and been plagued with injuries this season.

What did Porto and Milan win. bit confused I didn't say they were quality teams, they weren't. You said unfair to judge AW due to the quality of players he can get and those are two examples that prove that's an excuse. Two teams of lesser quality that a manager got to win against better opposition with using his tactics, which AW can't do.

Simeone won the league lost his best player and then had his two rivals spend £80m on the best players and sits 4 points off top spot. Wenger got 4th kept the players he wanted spent £77m and is 13 points from top and you are criticising Simeone?

My point is that you can take the same budget and team and give it to two managers. One will be able to get the best out of them by changing his tactics and can win trophies whilst the other can't and in my opinion AW is the latter.

Klopp, Simeone etc may not win the league this season but if I had to back one of them or AW winning it anytime soon I wouldn't put a dime on AW.

Admire what he has done and how has kept the club whilst paying off the stadium. But that's done and now I think he needs to pass the torch

{Ed025's Note - some fair points there roland..

6.) 02 Dec 2014 21:01:05
Your last paragraph is the one that says it all, let him get the club through the bad times, moan about a lack of trophies and no sooner than he has the funds to compete jog him off up the road.

I really love that thought process and all the excuses that get crammed in with it.

7.) 03 Dec 2014 00:07:22
They aren't excuses just my unbiased view, I'm a Liverpool fan and would absolutely love AW - he is exactly what we need. Someone who can balance the books, get 4th and get out of the group stages. But arsenal have paid off their stadium, balanced the books, have w cash reserve and want to win titles. I personally don't think he can deliver that even if you gave him a blank check.

From what I see with arsenal is they tend to beat the teams they should beat (gets you 4th) but lose to the teams fighting for the title (why you lose titles). This reason for this IMO is he doesn't change tactics, ever. Arsenal play the same way (which is great to watch) whether they play burnley or barca, which means you beat the teams you are better then and then tend to lose to the ones as good as you or better - because managers know exactly what to expect from AW have a plan to counter it which works and he won't change it!

He hasn't beaten Mourinho in 11 games and has only one of his last 11 against United, even moyes out thought him and he got sacked that year. mourinho probably doesn't even bother planning against AW, just gets his plans out from when he first played him in 2005 and repeats. Look at the last United game, unlucky to concede a goal - everyone bombs forward with no defensive discipline and what happened? Conceded a second game over. At anfield last season fielded his strongest team, game over in 20 minutes for the exact same reasons. Chelsea played their B team and took all 3 points because they had a plan.

In regards to him now having money and deserves a chance to spend it to win something. this is his second season having money to spend and you are out of the title race before December. Ok he won an FA cup, but played hull and nearly completely screwed that up as well! Then move on to transfers, second season has money same problem. He bought Ozil who looks worse the chamberlain. This summer your net spent was £46m, Chelsea's was £10m yet the gap has widened between you. Because Mourinho saw the players who he didn't need (including Juan Mata which everyone called him crazy for) while AW kept players who don't have a future there (podolski, diaby, arteta, monreal, etc) heck took him how long to realise bendtner was useless? Then Mourinho saw the weak spots in his team and filled them with quality players, AW ignored the obvious weaknesses in your team and again arsenal have the same problems.

Hate to sound harsh as I do have a lot of respect for AW and love to watch Arsenal play as open football is entertaining. But this is the second season where he has money to spent and isn't any closer. Would love him to prove me wrong and will eat humble pie if he does, but personally from the outside looking in if you want league titles and CL trophies you need a new manager.

8.) 03 Dec 2014 08:01:05
Very good post mate.

9.) RD I agree with every single word you just wrote. It's good to see it from an outsiders point of view.

05 Jun 2014 21:28:48
Just a question about the Ox, think he is a very talented player. But injuries and lack of game time has seriously stagnated his progress. With rumours of you buying a winger and strength in midfield do you think he should stay at arsenal next season? If you get Griezman or a player of that calibre and with Walcott being fit + a striker coming in don't see his chances of playing improving. Would you loan him or keep him for next season?

Roland-dinho

1.) 05 Jun 2014 22:29:50
Would definitely keep him mate.
For me, he is the sort of player we could build a team around.
We could play him wide right, defensive mid or attacking mid.

He has plenty in his locker.

2.) I must have slipped into parallel universe, I thought you suggested the Ox going somewhere,!

3.) Sorry if it wasn't clear, wasn't implying that he should go permanently. Just think a loan would do him a world of good. Incredibly talented player but if you look at what a year of solid football has done for sterling (lfc fan) can't help but think if chamberlain had a year of first team football he would develop massively. Also would imagine that if he came available for loan there would only be 4 or 5 teams in the BPL that he wouldn't start for

Sorry to be devils advocate but haven't the majority of the starting XI fielded tonight been at Arsenal for a fair while now?

If like Ox or Walcott the player hasn't reached their potential or expected potential isn't it the managers responsibility to move them on? If regardless of their undeniable ability a player simply just doesn't show up when needed, isn't it the managers job to either fix this or move them on?

Lfc fan but is a similar thing with Klopp can blame the players all you want but when backed by the owners regarding transfers and managing of players buck stops with them. can back them if aren't allowed to bring players they want in or the club won't spend within reason to improve the starting XI. but when you are breaking club transfer records and offering players £100,000+ a week and they don't deliver. that's your problem to fix.

As in lfc fan would hate to see sturridge go to Arsenal as the only risk would be keeping him fit. Besides that he'd be the perfect striker for Arsenal.

His hold up okay may be lacking but as shown against Wales he is brilliant at playing one twos in and around the box to create chances (which is something Arsenal do more and better then any BPL team) . He has pace, technique, great control, clinical finishing and can set up goals.

He also doesn't just finish of small teams, has scored regularly against United, scored in the Europa league final, World Cup, euros, against Chelsea, city and a few against you.

If you can keep him fit he would score goals for fun, consider his record for LFC and the standard of his team mates around him (barring that one season) . Imagine Ozil setting up the chances for sturridge he did for girouid? Then add Sanchez, Ramsay, cazorla, etc, he would get at least 20 a season. Plus if you kept girouid would have a plan b and decent back up striker. hope it doesn't happen and pray if it does Walcott isn't involved!

Lfc fan and would love my club to be competing for titles and the ucl, but always think England does the Europa league a disservice.

it is Europeans football of a very high standard and even though isn't the main European cup still have to beat great teams to win (Napoli, Sevilla, athletico, Chelsea, Porto, Dortmund, etc) so how is it looked down on but beating hull and villa in a fa cup final is seen as glorious?

Secondly, was at anfield for Dortmund 2nd leg and don't care what club you are but that was magical. Probably the best game I've been to and even if we don't win it nights like that are what make me proud of my club! Have been to an fa cup and league cup final and was far more excited before kick off against Dortmund then either of those!

Finally, sad but English teams need to seriously looks at the top European clubs and re-evaluate themselves. May be the richest league but personally struggle to place an English team in the top 5 world teams and when you consider the money/ wages available says something. City could win it this year but guarantee you will be played off the park in every CL game the play in.
