I'm not going to pretend I'm "in the know". However, I can read and so have been trawling various articles to see if it's possible to put 2 and 2 together and come up with something close to 4. Working on the assumption that "there's no smoke without fire" it does look like we have been in touch with Madrid about Benzema. Apparently Perez asked for a single cash payment of 65m euros upfront to complete the deal. He wanted this money to allow him to bring in Reus as an immediate replacement. Wenger (or whoever makes the spending decisions) refused and instead offered 35m upfront with another 3 annual payments each of 10m. Perez told them to get stuffed. Benzema, who had warmed to the deal, reacted out of frustration with his "clowns" tweet.

The Benzema deal has been in negotiationns and I was led to believe that it would go through, although now it looks unlikely. Arsenal have been very shrewd in signing top quality players from major European teams. They take advantage of the need to cash in on a player to make a major signing themseleves. When we signed Ozil, Real clearly needed cash to pay for Bale and when Barca signed Suarez, they too needed funds and we were able to prise Sanchez from them. This summer, from memory Real have signed 4 players and are trying to sign De Gea from United. Hence Arsenal have stepped in to try & sign Benzema.

I'm pretty sure Arsenal have enough money to pay upfront for Benzema, without the need to pay in instalments. I get the feeling Benz enjoyed the attention. He must have given Arsene the come on just for the ego boost.

The club has just announced that Danny Welbeck's cartilage has failed to respond to an increased training workload and that a decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery. He is expected to "be out for a period of months". Yes you've read this right... they knew this last week. I'm lost for words.

he will return in jan so we won't buy lol

cavani for 50mill would of been brilliant

2.) 03 Sep 2015 15:41:45
Still no point in panic buy

3.) 03 Sep 2015 15:46:48
Don't say that Derby because it could actually happen lol, we will say Welbeck coming back in January is 'like a new signing'.

4.) 03 Sep 2015 15:47:39
that is not a panic buy mate. welbeck was tho

5.) 03 Sep 2015 16:21:58
Charlie Austin.

6.) 03 Sep 2015 17:58:30
I think " don't worry we have welbeck coming back soon" was one of the most used phrases on Tuesday, we can rooll it back out in January

7.) 03 Sep 2015 18:22:17
I fail to see how it would have been a panic buy, they must have known Wellbeck would at least possibly need the op, so it would have been the duty of the club to make sure they had plans in place to deal with that.
I've said it before, as far as i can see that is a dereliction of duty.

8.) 03 Sep 2015 19:54:09
Exactly Dags, Charlie Austin was a no brainer

Can't believe we knew this last week have sold Podolski and let Sanogo go out on loan and still didn't sign a striker

I said the board and Wenger were clueless on Monday, I gave them to much credit there I think

Absolutely 1404.

Should have kept Podolski.

Here's a question for all you Arsenal watchers. Why does the captain's sleeve choice not apply to Szcznesy?

alibo

1.) I can't say for sure but I would say its because a keeper lands and rolls on the floor so long arms give the keeper added protection from elbow injuries, hence the padding on the long sleeves.
that's also why Ashley young always wears long sleeves boom boom

Would love to see Ozil get his first Arsenal goal tomorrow night. Outside Germany what other club could boast 4 different Germans scoring in 4 consecutive matches? It will also help reinforce the message that we can be a club for up and coming young Germans much like we were for young Frenchmen in the late 90s early 00s. And given the wealth of the talent pool there currently that can't be a bad thing at all.

alibo

1.) Good post

2.) Vorspron deutsche technique. as we say in dagenham, essex

3.) Got my wish. and how! Just a pity Pod isn't going to be stepping out on Sunday!

Is it just me or does the passing out from the back thing not work much better with Martinez in goal. Leno frightens the life out of me when he's involved.

I'm not sure he is going. The difference this time is that we don't have CL money to rely on next season. Wenger reckons that keeping Sanchez will give us the best chance of finishing in the top four again and getting us back on the CL gravy train. Good money for Sanchez now won't offset not qualifying for the CL the season after next.

It's right to include all the costs in a transfer. but if the full price of Xhaka for example actually comes to nearer £57m once fees and wages over the contract period are included surely it's only right to express the cost as an annual figure. So if 5kywalker is right the cost should be just shy of £15m a year for 4 years.

Hate to rain on your (4th place trophy) parade Darrentampa but a fundamental part of being able to retain something is holding it in the first place. Difficult given that we finished 3rd last year. I suspect you've been suckered in by the misconception peddled by the media that we finish 4th every year.

Not sure what your point is here rick. We took 8 points from these four games last season. I'd take that right now TBH.

Ed025. in your eloquent way you've made my point for me. Too small a squad = an over-reliance on star players = inevitable injuries to those star players. My point about my employers was only to emphasise that Wenger and the board don't seem to realise that injuries are entirely predictable and that pompously and piously leaving yourself short of numbers is a recipe for disaster.

alibo

{Ed025's Note - i could not agree more alibo, all the supporters and media knew this from the start, so you would think the manager and board would have realized it!, now im a massive arsene fan, but he can be very stubborn and this one may well come back and bite him on the arse mate..

Ed025. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't think this way. My employers put great emphasis on using past performance to help predict future trends. Using that forecasting technique I'd say my comment is all too accurate (sadly) . unless you know something different.

alibo

{Ed025's Note - i do know that all teams get injuries alibo not just arsenal, its part and parcel of the game im afraid mate, the solution is to have a squad that is big enough and good enough to rotate players, unfortunately arsenal dont and are now paying for that, so tell your employers that ED025 can solve all their problems through forward planning.. :)

With our over-reliance on our star players I can't see Ozil making it through to Christmas unscathed. so there's definitely potential for the injury situation to get even worse.

alibo

{Ed025's Note - thats it alibo..always look on the bright side mate.. :)

I know where you're coming from Robbie. but let's not make wholesale changes our equivalent of Man City's trip to Dubai. We really need to show this Boro side respect.
