From the Mirror:

Jack Wilshere says his Arsenal bosses must bring in more players as good as Gonzalo Higuain if they are to compete for the title again.

Real Madrid and Argentina striker Higuain is set for a £25million transfer to the Emirates.

While Wilshere is impressed by the Gunners' big summer move, he pointed to the two Manchester clubs as examples of the strength in depth needed to compete at the top of the Premier League.

He said: "You look at the type of players, like Higuain we're bringing in, and you've got to be encouraged.

"I think we need a few more - not to step right into the team but to add to the squad.

"We need our squad to be as deep as United's and City's. They can change their back four completely and still win.

"There's no way United would have won the Premier League trophy with 18 players. "

Sounds encouraging (?).

Hey eds can you explain that uefa rule in which if a player has signed a long term contract and when the player turns 28 he can buy out his contract. I read it somewhere before but don't remember exactly what it is. {Ed027's Note - Ed002 would have to answer that

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think it is if he is over 28 and is 2+ years into his contract he can buy it out but i'm not 100%

Sky just stated they expect higuain to sign tomorrow which is interesting, if its sky must be fairly certain otherwise they wouldn't add a time frame.

With the sanogo signing it will hopefully kick start a few and lead to some big names being called up.

i can seriously see some big money spent.

especially by the fact gazdis said we have 70million, has anyone actually thought and why we he openly say how much we have, I reckon we have a lot more than that in the reserves and he knows he's just under playing it. hopefully.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Didn't know the Sky story, someone has just told me Higuain this week.

Sure, great job- but now its time to invest the money we do have and bring some quality to our club, so we can start at least challenging for silverware again.

I expect and hope that this will happen this summer.

If not? Frankly wenger can sod off, I am fed up with him being an accountant- if what IG has said is correct, he can be a football manger again and hopefully start winning again.

With the transfer window ticking down, do you get the feeling we have been here before? Yawn.

I don't mean to be pessamstic, but until we put our money where our mouth is I feel all the words spoken by the club continue to be filled with the same empty promises.

Its not all doom and gloom, a number of players have moved on, djourou move to hamburg has initially beem confirmed as being on loan, but will be permenant, and bendtner is off to Frankfurt!

Hopefully somebody can take pitty on us by snapping up chamak, santos, park and gervinho (seriously what were we thinking). With most of the bench earners finally being cleared off the books, I see no excuses in not being able to bring in top quality replacements.

I would love to see us sign all of the players we are linked with, but until a precedent is set, I will continue to remain pessamistc. maybe once one has signed the rest follow.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes the clock is ticking its not like we've got 2 months to buy players! Oh wait we have! Chill out!

Got to love Kos the Boss for this statement :)

"I never said that. I feel very well at Arsenal.

I am aware it's a great club and I have a four-year contract. I know there's talk about me and Barcelona and Bayern, but people make their own conclusions.

The facts are simple: I have a contract at a club where I am happy. Full stop. We all know how situations change in football but I repeat that I'm not one to make castles in the sky.

I live in the moment, I seek nothing but to play the best I can.

In my mind my goal is to win trophies with Arsenal with whom I'm about to start pre-season training. I've no ulterior motives.

I'm at a healthy club, which plays beautiful football, doesn't lose money every year, sticks to its own budget and plays in the Champions League. Not many players can say the same. "

Was wondering what everyone thought of the Arsenal Top 50 Players list on the official Arsenal. com

http://www.arsenal.com/history/gunners-greatest-50-players

**Anyone missing from the list?
**Anyone on the list that should not be?

Ashley Cole should not be on that list, he's a turncoat and in his place should be Bould surely

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The fact he decided to "betray us" doesn't change the fact that he was a great player.
Also, whether he actually betrayed us is still up for debate, he definitely got a bigger package at Chelsea but some rumours are had we offered him 5k more he would have stayed. Something I can believe as we do seem to be very stingy when it comes to wages.
That said, I was still booing him at every opportunity, its great for the atmosphere!
I would definitely have had Fabregas, Van Persie could have been in there, in his best season as lethal as any other striker.
In time I can definitely see Wilshere getting in there, possible even Cazorla if he could sustain the level of performance he has shown in some games.
Great topic!

Agree0 Disagree0

Stuart Robson isn't on there.
It's all starting to make sense.

And how can you have Anelka Infront of Frank Mclintock?
Flybo

Agree0 Disagree0

Why does Cole leaving to better his career suddenly mean his contribution is belittled?

The fact that Robin van Persie isn't on the list makes a mockery of your point anyway as he would comfortably be in the top 25 if the people who compiled the list weren't bitter due to his move to Man Utd. Funnily enough which was also a career progressing move.

Strange.

I do feel in some ways our transfers are being held up by the impending mega money merry go round, this being Cavani, Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo.
Very encouraged by the reported offer for Bender, much prefer him to Fellaini. Cesar looks a certainty, would rather we got Handanovic but Inter took up that option. Cesar is a quality keeper mind you and happy to see his arrival. Does anyone know what his English is like?

The one transfer that would give me a real lift and hope for the future though is Santos to anywhere, no fee required, will even contribute taxi fare

Every club seems to want to get the maximum amount for their players. If you are ready to pay the full amount, do be it. The seller will always overprice, the buyer underprice. Look at Man Utds offer for Baines. the same thing with the ongoing Fabregas sale. In terms of a cash sale, we are in the best position. Napoli might be able to offers a deal I involving Cavani, but it is assumed Juventus offered less than us. The Chelsea Manager never played him every week so they won't want him. Surely City, PSG and Monaco would of been to the table by now. So as a result of this situation, it appears we are the only major player. i'm sure Madrid will need the money to increase Ronaldos contract. And they will want another forward. i'm sure if we are the only interested party. it's a matter of time. km

Wenger, Arsenal, please buy quality or else leave the team as it is. We have so many average players, why add to the list, one quality signing is good enough,

arsenal fail in a £19.7 million bid for lars bender from Bayern Leverkusen.

Thinking we don't want Fellaini because of his wages now, exploring other options.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

His wages weren't the problem. It was his buy-out clause

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jul 2013 17:04:16
One of the main reasons arsenal have not signed anyone YET is because most of the players we're trying to get in are big players in their current team and need replacing, now my source tells me that although 2 deals are basically done, they're not set in stone until the replacement has been sorted. RM won't let Higuin go unless they replace him with a big name like Bale/Cavani/Suarez and the Higuin is also dependent Ronaldo staying. So things are in place but nothing is getting finalised until all parties are satisfied

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Starting to get annoying when people talk about their sources, truth be known it is their opinion or news gathered from media.

I have no sources or no contacts but from what I have read about our transfer dealings in the past is we to get players on the cheap wait then get outbid. time and time again this has appeared to happen.

So forgive me BIgV but I am sure it is your opinion and not any source you have.

I would love to know what other clubs think of us when it comes to transfer dealings? When it comes to selling it appears we don't always get top money although what we got for adebayor when we sold him to city still puts a smile on my face! When it comes to buying, I wonder if we are known as tight, and perhaps the delays with transfers is we do play hard ball, don't offer what selling club wants which means that selling club would rather take their time seeing if any other offers come in before taking ours. I'm sure man u paid more than they wanted to for rvp last year, looking back do u think they regret it?! Just thinking out loud!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Couldn't agree more, latest thing I hear is the asking price is £23 million and we are haggling and stalling and offering £19.5 million. Really in the running costs of Arsenal is 3.5 million such a big deal? No wonder we have a bad reputation for negotiating.

Got a feeling no players will sign untill after Asia tour who would want to move to a new city/country and then go to aisa a few days later and it wouldn't be good for team building if any new signings asked to stay behind

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We need to do our signings as early as possible so the new players can bed in during the pre-season friendlies. This way they will be ready for the start of the campaign. If we wait until 31. 08 as usual, these players won't be fit or hit form until late sept, october.

So With djourou out, we are almost the done on the deadwood front. The remaining outs would be:

Chamakh
Bendtner
Park
Fabianski

That clears around 150-200k per week in wages, which could hopefully cover Cesar and Fellaini.

Fingers crossed, wenger gets these done. Clearing the deadwood is as important as the marquee signings - the two go hand-in-hand.

Those wanting Jovetic need head examined - people moan at Wenger for not buying proven class, and yet this is just another kid with no real success buit promise at a crazy price.

get rooney, you get 20+ goals a year from a centre forward - tried and tested in europe and domestically. A no brainer if possible.

With the transfer window now officially open, who are our three most realistic signings. This site is amazing, andf i'm sure everyone who contributes thinks the same.

Personally I'd say Higuain, Fellaini and Ceaser. Not bad to be honest.

For me.

Aurier (Since he was pictured in the shirt)
Cesar (Seems done to be honest) but I wouldn't rule out a late bid by Roma
A new defender to replace Djorou and Squallaci (Were now a little short)

As for the big names.

Higuain I feel his agent / brother is persuading him on holding out for Napoli, check out the quotes by his brother / agent in the same interview he said he was close, he basically urged Napoli to bid. With Madrid interested in Cavani I am worried about this one. I do reckon it will eventually happen.

Rooney, will never happen no disrespect I am an Arsenal fan myself but why would he leave winn9ing trophies every year and earning a 250k a week, don't make sense.

Fellaini - We are being priced out of this offer, 22m (really?) and 100k a week (Dont mind that) but 22m we will not in a million years pay this, although we should, he is a beast and is proven in the EPL so just cough up and make this happen!

We need to stop worrying about the financial elements and take a risk, taking a risk (That works out) mcould be the best thing that has happened in years. All other major transfers bar Cazorla have not really flourished so I fell this is why Wenger is reluctant.

My Personal opinion on who we will sign is as below:

Cesar
Aurier
Cheap CB to replace Djorou and Squallaci
'Hopefully' but eventually Higuain (This will drag and drag, Juan Mataesque) but hopefully we get our man.
Capoue

In a perfect world I would have Higuain, Rooney and Fellaini.

But obviously this isn't a perfect world so realistically I think we will sign Higuain, Cesar (don't see the point in this really) and then someone who absolutely none of us saw coming

The point in Cesar is very valid. Shezz has no tough competition. We need to give him some competition and allow him to progress his ability under one of the best Goalkeepers over the past 10 years.

Ceasr had a fantastic confederations cup (And before people say it was only the confederations cup) you got to remember that regardless of the tournament he was making wonderful save after save. Also his Penalty save was fantastic. For £2m it would be criminal to ignore it. Class keeper, class price. He was outstanding for QPR last season too which is the feeling shared by the majority of people.

Higuain, Cesar and thirdly me obviously as I was pictured in a shirt while on holiday.

Luiz Gustavo as an around cheaper option to Fellaini. Who multiple Evertonians have critised??

Yh gustsavo or paulinhuo will do even Hernanes is quality

Id still have fellani.

luis gustavo and paulinho are red cards waiting to happen, they had no intention to play the ball on quite a few occasions, the ref was biased towards brazil. although I did enjoy spains arrogance of completing the trophy cabinet end.

saying that. this competition has been one of the most bogus ones ever. spain and brazil have no idea what the germans can do.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fellaini any day.
Ceasar
Williams
Higuain

Stuart Robson was on Talksh#te earlier talking about the Confederations cup.
Surprised he didn't take the opportunity to blame Wenger for supplying tear gas to the Brazilian authotities.
