Did you know Arsenal wanted to appoint Alex Ferguson as our manager in 1986 but Fergie wanted to wait and see out the season with Aberdeen because of his involvement in Scotlands world cup campaign in Mexico
, Arsenal didn't want to wait so appointmented George Graham instewd.
Not a bad decision but what if we'd waited a few months for Fergie?
I never knew about this and obviously between them Arsene and George did a brilliant Job for us but it is intriguing to think how things might have worked out for us under Fergie, champions of Europe and umpteen titles or maybe he'd have been sacked without Lee Martin and Mark Robbins to keep his job for him :-)

Arsenal are the only English team to beat Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich away.

We are also the only team to beat ACMilan, Inter Milan and Juventus away.

Ummm not sure what that has to do with the size of onions Dags but good knowledge all the same mate :-)

I often wonder how he would have faired selling his best players every year to pay for a new stadium too.

But that kinda ruins the story.

Was you aware we went for him in 86 Red? I wasn't until tonight when I read it.
That's the meat of the thread mate try not to be so Arsene sensitive mate.

Gunner we must be the unluckiest club in the world, we nearly sign fergie, nearly sign messi, nearly sign ronaldo, nearly sign ya ya, well we dodged one bullet there at least.

24 Sep 2016 08:02:45
62 no I didn't and I couldn't honestly give a toss who we allegedly nearly signed. 😉.

Agree0 Disagree3

24 Sep 2016 08:31:09
62 it's zero to do with Wenger it's just another story of what cudda, shudda, wudda. There's literally thousands of them and none of them happened so where or what's the point mate. 😀

Apparently Guardiola wants to manage Arsenal or does he, did he, would he?

Champions 3 times in the first 8 years is the impressive ones. Last 12 not as good as it should be.

Agree8 Disagree4

23 Sep 2016 18:50:10
Either way Steve - its more impressive with Wenger than not. huge difference now is you have 3 big big teams to beat due to money -> Utd, City and Chelsea.

Full respect to Wenger and the fantastic teams and football he has brought to our stadiums.

We were very lucky to watch some of those top top top players perform in the famous shirt and even more lucky that they graced the same team. You will tell your grandkids about the invincibles and our double winning teams as well as showing them on YouTube why DB10, Pires and Henry were so special

We have been lucky to see these teams and I think fortunate to have such a loyal manager

Hope he leaves on a high - for him and us!

Agree9 Disagree8

23 Sep 2016 20:07:05
Please please I think I could stay loyal as you put it, if I could control my destiny, immune from the sack, earn 8 mil a year and decide when I leave. There is loyalty and there is loyalty. Like I've always said he hasn't ever left because he wouldn't get the control and the terms of employment anywhere else that he gets here. He very clever, he's not daft.

23 Sep 2016 20:11:02
S4 I hope he doesn't leave on a high. For me if he wins the league this season he has proved himself and can stay in that knowledge. If not I don't see him ever leaving on a high. Its now or never for me.

23 Sep 2016 22:54:04
So Steve, if you could have the last 20 years again - you would turn it down just because of your hate for Wenger? Sad 😂.

Your words your thoughts sy not mine. i'm on about his so called loyalty, what you on about.

Agree1 Disagree4

24 Sep 2016 00:12:43
Sy I have never said I hate wenger, again your words. I have only said he's had his time and now its time for someone else. Stop putting words out for effect.

Agree1 Disagree2

24 Sep 2016 01:04:42
Wait, wait, wait. So Steve, you do realise hoping Wenger doesn't leave on a high is hoping Arsenal don't win anything, you know that right? I agree with a lot of your points with how our club is won but as an Arsenal supporter, i will always hope we win everything. Not wanting that is kinda the opposite of supporting the Gunners. Not wanting us to win anything is a Spuds thing buddy.

Agree0 Disagree2

24 Sep 2016 08:59:14
Steve - I did put words into your mouth but you are anti-Wenger which is demonstrated in your posts. To say you don't want to win anything this year is strange.

If our next manager wins the league 3 times, 3 second place finishes and a handful of FA Cups over 20 years then I will be tipping my hat to him or her even if it's Raver. If we then never fall fall out if top 4 and play great football - even better.

I am sure Raver would take our 20 year history

You may not hate him - sorry about saying that.

As fans we should want us to win and appreciate what Wenger has done.

Big game today - away win! COYG! 🏆🏆.

Agree0 Disagree2

24 Sep 2016 10:36:08
Outback read the post. The reason I hope he doesn't leave on a high is we win the league and he stays. Which means he won't be leaving. I don't think we will win it this year so that won't exactly be a high.

Agree0 Disagree1

24 Sep 2016 10:42:32
Sy putting words in my mouth again. If you read posts and don't read them properly and write lies then I can't help that. I have never ever said i don't want to win anything ever, where did you get that rubbish from. i'm an arsenal fan with an opinion that we can have a better manager and win more. And I don't go around making things up for effect.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Sep 2016 10:58:11
Sy I do want us to win that is why I want a new manager, I could say you don't want us to win by wanting to keep him but I won't because like your suggestion its wrong. I do appreciate what wenger has done I used to worship him, I don't appreciate what he's doing now, big difference.

24 Sep 2016 12:22:55
My apologies Steve. I've read that wrong.

Alexis Sanchez vs Eden Hazard debate has been raging on for longer than it should have. Alexis is clearly the better footballer and emphatically so. Hazard is a great player but he's so overrated its sad.

Alexis At arsenal :
Games : 99
Goals : 46
Assists: 23.

Maybe saturday will also help the debate, whatever it is.

Agree3 Disagree5

23 Sep 2016 18:44:21
I would happily have Hazard in our team - quality player and is often the difference at Chelsea.

Agree3 Disagree2

23 Sep 2016 22:06:13
Hazards better without bring biast. Sanchez is more clinical I'll give him that but when I see Hazard run at people it just excites me. Thing is with Hazard is he needs to be more selfish and needs to shoot more. He gets marked out the game too often aswell because he's Chelsea's only threat from the wing. Willian has no end product. If they had a Griezmann or Mahrez on the left Hazard would be twice the player.

Agree3 Disagree2

24 Sep 2016 09:18:00
No doubt i would have him at Arsenal he's a great player but not as good as Sanchez. Running at people doesn't make him a better player though, and saying Sanchez is more clinical is a roundabout way of saying he's better. No need to make excuses for him, Sanchez has been our only good Winger for a while too. You could argue that Sanchez would also be twice the player if he had those players around him.

Rg, I love this time of the year when all Arsenal fans get carried away by beating hull and n. Forest and are going to win the league. Even one fan on the net said Arsenal will win the quadruple lol this from a club who has never lifted a European trophy and they say spurs fans are deluded .

23 Sep 2016 19:45:21
Of Corsa you'll go further than us in the champions league Raver, your playing your 3 home games at Wembley for starters and that's 50,00O miles per game by the time you've found the place.

23 Sep 2016 20:23:21
I think what raver meant was moscow is further away than arsenals opponents.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Sep 2016 08:59:35
Sorry if this has already been posted or something similar to it but I felt the need to vent.

As Arsene celebrates 20 years with us, he's quite rightly getting plaudits for his longevity and loyalty to Arsenal as well as being ushered out the door at the end of the season. I'm in the 'time for change' camp and have been for some time. I love Arsene and think he's been amazing for the club but football has moved on and his methods have not. It's definitely time for fresh blood.

The issue always though is who's big enough to take on the challenge of following Arsene Wenger. Granted titles have been hard to come by and mock all you want about the 4th place trophy but who else could achieve what he has and more so who has the bottle to deal with failure, missing out on the top 4 or worse, finishing below Spurs!

Eddie Howe continues to be linked with the job and for me this is absolutely ludicrous. The man has no credentials whatsoever other than being English and the next great hope for English football managers. He wouldn't have the respect of the players or the fans and any reign would surely be short lived. This is just my view but I wanted to gauge the feelings of the rest of you.

If this is Arsene's last year, who do the fans believe should be next on the throne?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

23 Sep 2016 10:06:31
I don't know if Eddie Howe is right but wengers credentials weren't massive when he joined.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Sep 2016 10:40:43
True, when Arsene joined us he wasn't a big name manager, and atm there is a real shortage of big names available.

If Diego Simeone could be swayed that would be massive, other than that my shortlist of wildcards would shock many and probably not have much chance of coming to fruition:

- Clarence Seedorf
- Patrick Viera.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Sep 2016 11:10:56
Ronald Koeman would be my pick. Knows the league, did very well with Southampton and now Everton. If we could not get him, I would love to take a big chance and get Thierry Henry in. Talks a lot of sense in his pundits role and loves the club inside out.

What do you guys think?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed025's Note - i think you should keep your bloody grubby hands off koeman jim.. :)

23 Sep 2016 11:35:16
lol ed. Think he is severely underrated and would do a fantastic job whichever club he was at.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - eddie howe will be fine for you jim with arsene as his mentor when he moves upstairs..but thats just my guess mate..

23 Sep 2016 20:15:12
Ed 025 wenger shouldn't be anywhere near the next manager when he comes in. If he needs guidance he ain't good enough. Clean slate for me. New era.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i think he could be a great mentor to a guy like eddie howe if he got the gig steve, he could be the buffer between the manager and the board that an inexperienced manager might need, to me arsene will always have legendary status at arsenal and still has something to offer, i know some might not agree and may see him interfering in that role and im not sure he would accept the position anyway mate..
