Eds, any truth at all in the rumours that arsenal are considering Gundogan? wishful thinking I know, can't help but ask though. thanks

Oleg Maputo

{Ed002's Note - He is refusing to agree a new deal and is seen as a shadow of his former (pre-injury) self - could be a dumb move.}

The guy is broken hence 16 mill

2.) 09 Jan 2015 16:55:21
Ed02 Do you think of this happening? Gundogan to arsenal? Thanx

{Ed002's Note - If by the summer he has not agreed an extension I would expect Dortmund to try and sell him. He has been playing poorly and it makes no sense to me.}

3.) 09 Jan 2015 19:25:23
Make sense to me better than what we have got

4.) 10 Jan 2015 13:45:30
Better than we have got? 2 years ago it would have been a no brainer, but we have Diaby, he's great but also broken! Maybe they could share a cab to physio?

Not at £16m for me it's a massive risk

Picszeck being linked as Sagna replacement in the media - any truth in this eds? is there any real chance of him leaving Dortmund?

i think he'd be a cracking signing.

Oleg Maputo

{Ed002's Note - Could be a Picszeck?}

Eds do you know what's going on with Park Chu Young? Are the club trying to shift him or keeping him as an emergency option?

Oleg Maputo

{Ed001's Note - they have been trying to move him on for a while.}

Ed, do you have any info on the likelihood of us signing Cheukou Kouyate? {Ed002's Note - Arsenal and Southampton are interested but Lazio have not dropped there interest.}

Podolski out for 8-10 weeks ffs!

Oleg Maputo

1.) Apparently it is the cost for a victory over Fenerbache, a match that Podolski shouldn't have needed to play in if we had the appropriate depth to the squad which we don't. It is the cost of failing to identify and purchase players in an efficient and proffesional manner.

2.) It is also reaffirms the view that our training regime is inadequate as the number of injuries we have considering the squad size is alarming. I also agree that this is inevitable given the lack of depth in our squad. If we do not add 4 or 5 players in the next few days, we will be mid-table this season as we will not be able to cope with the number of games we will be playing (expect an early exit from the domestic cups). Wheover is reponsible for this hideous situation (and I do not necessarily believe it is AW), should go now for the sake of our club.

3.) I think you are right, considering Arsene has so much faith in all these youngsters, why did he not play them when we are 3 - 0 up and playing at home.

Sangoo, Ganrby, frimpong, Ryo and MAYBE Zelaham - on the bench - after that the barrel is dry.

4.) I felt Poldi was finally getting into his own rhythm these last 2 games. He was trying to be more involved with the game with all the moment an chances he was taking.
If you watched the last 2 games your know what I mean with his play.
Quick Recovery Poldi.

I think today shows that we need ore balance between our 2 styles of play. We are experimenting with the defensive game which worked very well against Citeh and in the 1st half today. But we still need to keep our precision and focus on the ball - today we were very poor in that department, kept giving away possession and making incomplete passes. Only Welbeck really created danger. It's all well and good blocking the other team out, but we need to do more on the ball when we play in this style. We needed more from Ramsey and Cazorla particularly today.

The other issue is that we conceded a goal from a corner due to dodgy marking. The other one Kosc could have done better but it was an excellent header from Kane who really is very good. Slight issue on the right as well with Rose's first half runs and eventual cross for the goal - Bellerin was often beaten with Welbeck not covering.

Basically Wenger has made big tactical changes recently and the team is still learning. We need to find a mid ground between defensive and offensive tactics. I think it is much about game plan as players.

In terms of goals conceded (from fewest to most), we are now 9th in the PL. It's always been a problem area for us, and it's not yet the end of the season, bit's been a while since it looked this bad? We're often worse than other top teams but are rarely out of the top 5 in the last few seasons (twice in PL by my count?). We are on course to concede almost 50 this year. we conceded 49 in 2011/12 but have been working away from that for three years, only to take a huge step backwards. If we actually hit 50, which seems possible at the moment, it would be our worst ever in the Premier League.

I know there are teams who've had it worse (eg Liverpool last year), but we cannot underestimate the mess that's been made of defence this year. Even taking last season's batterings into account, we have taken a massive step back this season. at least last season we kept it tight against smaller teams. we are making huge mistakes against all sorts of teams this year.

do people think this is all down to lack of DM/defensive backup, or is there something more to it? my fear is that it's a part of the game Wenger has almost given up on.

Oleg Maputo

1.) I think its our age old friends coming together, our MF that allows players to run past them into the box and onto the ball without company dispite having a 15 yard head start on the attacking player, our defender's all leaving responsibility to someone else, our complete lack of discipline leadership or organization.
But a part from those things nothing I can put my finger on Oleg mate :-)

Tight at the end and we got lucky a few times with defensive errors, but I'm pleased with the result.

Defensive organisation will take us a long way if we ever start seriously implementing it. But I'm glad to see Wenger is at least taking defence a bit more seriously with substitutions at the end. It may look slap-dash, but it may well have saved us 2 wins in 3 days. Everyone knows we need at least one more defender, but Wenger still has means at his disposal. Tactical substitutions is one of those things, and at least he's trying that now. We still need to seriously look at our set piece organisation and positional play on counter attacks though.

I'll also say that I've always stood by Szczesney but he's getting lucky way too often now. As many have stated, every time a ball comes in he charges out like a madman. This used to be something he did every now and then but he seems to do it all the time now. I think we should give Ospina a run in the team - a bit of competition should see Szczesney up his game.

Any a bit negative but we actually did well to win. Sanchez, Cazorla and Ox kept the pressure on West Ham so they couldn't spend too long building momentum, even if we should have finished it off at the end.

Good result, but I really feel we need to follow it up next week. I know Soton just held Chelsea, but we need wins more than Chelsea do and we should have the resources to hit top gear for a win. That's just what we need to do now. Very optimistic but hey, it's that time of year.

Oleg Maputo

1.) He had one moment in the 2nd half where he missed the ball but the rest of them he got spot on. We playing a team where they have putting lots of balls in the box and have carroll plus other players 6ft plus. A commanding keeper was a must.

If your playing against a keeper trying to claim everything you will try to avoid him and not try to deliver close to him. He doesn't do it as nonchalantly as Cortois but we needed a strong keeper today and we got one

20 Dec 2014 19:29:55
So who do people expect to see starting in midfield tomorrow?

If Ox doesn't start then Cazorla may have to go next to Flamini, with Welbeck Alexis Giroud and one of Podolski/Campbell/Sanogo ahead. This would be pretty attacking though.

Otherwise we can put Coquelin or Chambers alongside Flamini which will be pretty defensive. OR give Zelalem a chance.

In all honesty I would give Zelalem a go. I think the team would be better balanced and he could rise to the occasion. Otherwise perhaps Chambers, given how many attacking midfielders Liverpool have.

If Ox doesn't start, who do people want to see?

Oleg Maputo

1.) DIABY

2.) 20 Dec 2014 20:57:09
Cazorla, Ox, Chambers, Welbeck.
Sanchez and Giroud.

3.) And who plays CB with Chambers in MF?

Debuchy will go back to right back.

4.) 20 Dec 2014 23:37:36
Good point G95.

Replace Chambers with Flamini.

5.) 21 Dec 2014 03:06:06
Absolutley not on Zel! I'm a big fan of his but this is a an absolute must 3points! Call him the fastest dog in a horse race, not a hope.

12 Dec 2014 14:29:02
Any ideas about who'll play CB along side Per tomorrow?

Koscielny most likely out, Chambers suspended, even Monreal out. the next choice would be Hayden but I noticed he wasn't in the squad on Tuesday so maybe he's injured too?

Who else have we got? Can Flamini or Coquelin play there? Could Debuchy even re-locate? Semi Ajayi?

I'm always intrigued when these things happen, but it quite seriously highlights our incredible need for defensive reinforcement.

Oleg Maputo

1.) I believe Hayden is injured as well, aye.
As for who will play CB - I've seriously got no idea, not even sure Debuchy will be able to last the whole 90mins.

2.) Flamini has played there before and I personally prefer him to Monreal as a CB.

Hayden I heard was injured (surprise) but I've also heard him and Coquelin were seen back in training with the full squad and both could play.

3.) 12 Dec 2014 16:32:54
Isaac Hayden (if fit) or Stefan O'Connor, or he might even move Debuchy in the middle to partner Per and play Bellerin at RB.

4.) "with the manager recalling Francis Coquelin from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic to provide cover."
Any idea why we aren't recalling Jenkinson too?

5.) Flamini for me, just got to watch those tackles that don't matter so much outside the box

6.) Heard it's most likely Debuchy - not sure how I feel about that.

7.) 12 Dec 2014 18:25:42
lemon,

I think West Ham paid an extra premium so that we can't recall him back until end of season.

8.) Dags if true that's pretty short sighted of wenger isn't it

9.) 12 Dec 2014 22:44:24
Eden,

In terms of defensive cover, Wenger has been short sighted even before the season started.

I think Benzema would be a great signing. Apparently having a bad season by his standards, but scored 7 and assisted 6 in 14 games. Not bad at all.

Of course Lewandowski is better but I wouldn't under-rate Benzema. His only major obstacle seems to be his attitude, and I think Wenger could resolve that.

Don't need him. Got Flamini, Flamini, Diaby - who will literally be a new signing - and Flamini.

Hoping for better. He's 27 now, injury-prone and has scarcely played for the last 2 years. He has gone from a great player to one who has only the potential to be what he was, and I think we need more than that. If we are getting an attacking midfielder, I reckon we should get one who primarily plays off the wing. I wouldn't be at all against Di Maria, though doubt we could get him (at least until RM sign Bale).

In principle I agree G62, but the issue is that if we but him we won't get another CB now or in summer, and we could do with someone very good.

I also have a horrible feeling whenever we get French players hitting their 30's. will it be another squillaci?

Oleg Maputo

Haha true G62. The thing is we are in much more of a state this year than we normally are mid-season. I think even Wenger knows what a gamble it is to leave our current squad without adequate backup. I can imagine us signing at least one, probably a CB, maybe even on loan.

Honestly I disagree. He can make good challenges but lacks the positional aspect. At the end of the day, a DM has to really stick to his defensive tasks and can only get forward rarely. Look at Schneiderlin, Matic etc, they will never go forward unless they know someone's covering. Soton can do it a bit more because Wanyama and Schneiderlin cover each other. We could have something like Ramsey and Wilshere but I just cannot see one covering the other - they both dash forward if we're attacking and their primary skills are in those capacities. Seriously - look how deep the DM's are when teams are attacking Chelsea or Soton, they are almost in line with the CB's. players like Ramsey will not stay there for large parts of a game. Wenger can keep shuffling around but nothing will beat bringing in a bespoke DM who knows his job and sticks to it.

Oleg Maputo

{Ed025's Note - i agree oleg..

Good point G62. Been thinking about Pardew in relation to Wenger recently - Newcastle fans were unhappy with the team's performances earlier this season, and I genuinely believe their complaints pushed him to reinvigorate the team. HOWEVER, he clearly didn't feel wanted by the fans and ended out leaving, putting the club in a very tenuous position.

Of course these two managers have very different relationships with their clubs, but I would think that we can learn a bit from that situation. We clearly need Wenger to change, but it could be dangerous to push him out too early if we go too far with it. The fans and club somehow need to put pressure on him to address the issues that are making us perform at an unacceptable level.

He's trying to become the new Fergie, his method of getting ref's on his side is a bit different though.

To be fair I thought it should have been a penalty for the foul on Fabregas. But when you consider the numerous blatant dives Chelsea players have got away with recently, everyone knows that referees do them more favours than disservices.

Honestly I find Mourinho quite entertaining. He chats so much nonsense that it's hard to take that side of him seriously. We have our problems with Wenger but people like Mourinho remind us how dignified Arsene is.

{Ed025's Note - i used to like him oleg, but this time around has become somewhat of a p***k for me mate..
