Eds - is there any truth behind the John Stones speculation? I think he would be an ideal signing for us - a player comfortable on the ball and who can cover the right side of defense (making us less vulnerable when Bellerin is up fieldin attacking play) .

unbelievable belief

{Ed002's Note - Barcelona, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea all took a look at Stones in the summer of 2014 but none made an offer. Chelsea made an attempt to sign him in the summer of 2015 but then moved on to another target. I very much suspect Manchester United who showed interest some time back will look again to Stones, but right now I think they are looking elsewhere as well. Arsenal and Barcelona will be interested if he becomes available.}

Interesting. You don't see Chelsea going back in for him Ed?

Any interest in Marquinhos also. He hardly seems to be playing again now Luiz is back fit for PSG.

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea are interested in Stones but have been told he is not for sale - they have interest elsewhere. There is no interest in Marquinhos from Arsenal.}

Sheffield Wednesday tonight in a comparatively meaningless cup competition.

Do we pick a strong side to keep the momentum or rest our first team? Thoughts people?

unbelievable belief

Fringe players and players back from injury.
Mert, Chambers, Flamini, Arteta, Debuchy, Gibbs, plus would throw in Gabriel and Cazorla and Theo or Olly to balance things out.
Ospina injured so Cech in goal.

2.) 27 Oct 2015 11:37:02
Squad players only with the exception of Ox who needs games, if we win we win and lose the same just use it to give people who need it a run.

3.) 27 Oct 2015 12:03:14
I agree 62 just put all the reserves out with a few of the first team squad through the middle.

The last time we lost the opening game of the season (versus Villa) we paid a club record transfer for a player (Ozil).

Lets hope the rumours about Benzema are true!

But there was no urgency or vibrancy in our play today. Aside from the Ox and Monreal, the team was poor. A few observations:
> how is it that we switch the Ox to right back, but all the attacking play is down the left with Monreal?
> Ramsey (my favourite player) starts on the right, but typically plays in-field and therefore offers no width. There's a lack of discipline there to not provide the width when the opposition are playing 3 central midfielders
> we played poorly, but the Hammers got their tactics right.

lets see how we react in the next game and get a response. It'll be tough though - Palace away won't be easy.....

I have never been a Ramsay fan, Ox was by far our best player. Poor all around for me, but fair play to WestHam. That was organisation at it's finest. And fair play too the young lad they played in Midfield. looks like talent coming back through at the Hammers.

I have my doubts whether we'll be signing anybody this January, but I'm going to throw a name out to you and ask what you think.

He is Wilfried Bony.

Is he Arsenal class? I think he could be. Any decent striker would score goals in this Arsenal team.

Could you do a similar job to Giroud? Not sure.

However, he's had 4-5 months in the league and is beginning to adapt really well after a stuttering start. For me, this takes out some of the risk and means he can make an impact.

Cost? Probably in the £20m bracket.

Ladies and gents thoughts on Bony? What other striker at another premiership club (not a top club) would you take?

Happy new year one

unbelievable belief

1.) I wouldve taken Boney in the summer. His record speaks for itself and although it was only the dutch league it's the same league where Suarez got a goal a game average.
Wouldnt be disappointed if we got him this summer.

2.) If we are going for someone from the Premiership then my pick would have to be Loic Remy - quick, strong and can finish also premiership experience aswell! But I have a sneaky suspicion that this Berbatov talk is a smoke screen for something bigger!

Just on the off chance has anyone got a spare ticket for the villa game coming up, I can meet at the ground because I'm from the midlands! Or is there anyone on here who goes to regular games from the midlands (Birmingham area) and I can tag along :)

3.) Hmm I'm not sure, he definitely has the strength, but not sure about quality. Do you think he'd be able to pull off the touches giroud does? Bony does look to be a decent finisher as shown by his performance vs city.
Other strikers from lower down the teams I would consider are: benteke, berahino, g.ramirez maybe, but I believe we should definitely be aiming higher.

I really have my doubts whether AW will go out and buy anyone in January. I want to get a feel from fellow gooners what will happen.

Will it be:

a) We sign nobody

b) We get stocking filler type players who won't be automatic first choice

c) We throw caution to the wind and buy at least 1 high caliber player to help us push for the title

I suspect option a is most likely to happen.

unbelievable belief

1.) Personally, I don't think Wenger will buy anybody.
We all know we are a bit short in attack, but I think Wenger knows he can push Podolski or Walcott upfront in case Giroud is injured/tired/out of form, without sacrificing the midfield too much.
I would love Benzema or Loic Remy in Jan but I know that won't happen, certainly the Remy situation is a no-go, under the agreement of his loan from QPR.

2.) Can't see any purpose in buying anyone who isn't going to improve the squad - and that's not that easy to do. Almost all of the 'so-called' targets from the last window who we missed out on have not really shown that much (one or two exceptions maybe)

3.) I think it will be option B with Betner going, possibly to club we buy from in swap and cash deal. Oh and they get the cash :-)
Just in case you were wondering.

Or long punt Michu

4.) Put it this way, in January we were linked with players that, following the signing of Ozil, would not be good enough. The bar has been raised and expectations again too.

I can see Wenger avoided big name signings in January. Especially as most quality players will be cup tied in the champions league etc.

Wenger will then try for a big name striker, left sided attacking winger and or centre back in the summer in my humble opinion.

5.) Morata is the one in Jan as long as we get an option to buy for the summer!

6.) I think Morata makes sense and is the most likely to happen

I think a hour workout is just what the team needed, aside from Per of course. The back four looked solid once again - and our full backs the stand-out players. Nacho was solid all game and Jenks very effective going forward. Pleased to see his willingness to take players on. Jenks looks to be physically the fittest player we have.

It was great to win the game and you can see that Arsene has not changed his philosophy much that the League Cup by giving the young players the added responsibility. We had 3 young players taking the penalties at the end which was especially pleasing to see.

I see the Chavs await us next. Bring it on!

unbelievable belief

1.) Defense looked good. its like I do not fear the other teams attempts. feels strange. 11 months ago it was all over the shop defending and now, with the same personnel its different?

whoever is doing the job. kudos.

i though ryo was poor, gnabry tried a bit too much, and I was surprised bendtner lasted. he looks in bad shape.

no injuries so that's good new, and we have not used 8 players who will play sat.

Swansea lost today and that's because they didn't field a team that could destroy birmingham. they were thinking about sat and about us.

2.) Hey lakerville

ST nick just needs some games under his belt, he has acted the **** in the past but did he ever really get a chance at the club.

were going to need nb23 over the season, its all about confidence with a forward.

3.) True malaga. Saint Bendtner of the near post, needs to be on the bench to support giroud as a sub if ever needed.

4.) How could you say he didn't get any chance by the club?
Since 2007/2008 he has made 150 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, half of them were coming on as a substitute. He scored 43 goals and assisted 20.
He is a lazy ass person and I don't want to see him near the first team. Watching him play makes me sick. He is NOT Arsenal quality and will never be. IMO Akpom should have played a full game last night instead of the TGSTEL.

And congrats to the youngsters they deserved the win.

5.) Dnt worry mate Malaga says a lot of things that dnt make sense unless ure on some sort of psychedelic

Draxler is going to be a great player. He has a directness to his play that makes him so very dangerous. This guys can shoot and score outside the box with both feet, great close control, has a trick or 2 to go by players if needed too. What a player he is already.

I don't know what the Germans are doing to create such a wealth of young players. I shall not compare what the Germans are doing to what we are doing in England, but we should be envious.

Buy him and buy him now.

William Gallas is also available. Come on - we want defensive cover don't we?

Wrong again. We've actually put a bid in for gender bender. But it's quite a long process and the signing won't officially go through until the January 2015.

A bit of reality people - we've tried to sell him and he won't lower his wage demands. the world's greatest and Park are the only 2 players we've tried and failed to ship out. So on that front, we've had a successful transfer window. What AW was saying it is it unlikely he'll be sold now. But I don't EVER want to see Bendtner on the bench, let alone playing for our club again.

I still want to remain optimistic about transfers IN to the club - but I'm beginning to wane.

Theo has been poor of late. But when he played as a striker earlier in the season, we could all see a very good player. It hasn't helped having all the injuries and Theo having to play left wing - not having a left foot hasn't helped. Steve r made the point a few days ago that it doesn't help players to not have a settled position in the team. This not only applies to Theo, but Aaron too.

We can only judge Theo has a striker - now with the injured coming back, hopefully we can see him vying for the striker role which helps competition and will give Giroud a breather.

So in summary, keep Theo, play in a forward role and reap the rewards!

G62 - you speak a lot of sense :-) You are spot on about Arsene - but for being blinded and for some unfathomable reason, not signing a DM (and to a lesser extent a striker) , these are his faults. What he has achieved both during his stellar initial spell, then during and post the stadium move have been immense.

I do think success is around the corner but could be accelerated a little had we have more transfer activity these past few windows.

For all Arsene's qualities (and there are many) , we all know he has a stubborn streak. It's both a quality we should admire, but it is also a weakness. It's obvious to all fans our need for a DM this January window. Only time will tell whether he second guesses himself and buys one or not!

But an Arsenal without Arsene will happen, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of our lives.

I can see us bossing possession and Olympiakos sitting back and hitting us on the break. For that reason, I hope Gabby and Kos are the 2 centre backs. And for that matter Olly needs to start up front - Theo needs to be an impact player from the bench (lets not rush him back either) . If we start with crisp passing, I can see us climbing the mountain. But we mustn't be too gun-ho and attack with 9 men - I still have flashbacks to the home game versus Monaco last year. We need patience, discipline and the right mentality for this game. Prediction - 3-0.

We should also acknowledge that in Bayern, Barcelona and Real, we currently have some of the finest teams in living memory playing. Given that they are so good and consistent, that's at least 3 of the 4 semi final births in the CL taken care of. Particularly when you think that in Ronaldo and Messi, you have 2 of the best players EVER.

It'll be interesting to do a World XI - just to see how many Premier League players would be in that team.

We also have the disadvantage that the Premier League is so competitive - other leagues not so and therefore the the toll it takes on the squad to play week-in and week-out in our league is a factor.

Now to the quality question. I would say that the best teams in England are not as strong as they once were. The Arsenal and Manchester United teams between 2000 to 2005 were better teams than ply their trade in the Premier league over the last 5 years.

But with the new deal kicking in next year, there will be more money in the PL. It'll be interesting to see what happens here - the mid-table teams in the PL become more competitive. But will the "big teams" improve yet more? There's only so many world class players, the top top top players out there - and can we lure they away from the other big continental teams? We saw an attempt that this with Manchester United being linked to Moeller, Ronaldo, Bale or Arsenal link to Benzema. Equally certain that Man City and Chelsea has "big" targets too. But how many came? None. Slightly off topic there with my thoughts - I just wonder if the potential riches of the PL next year will entice the best players or not (and therefore improve on the quality) .

Just one final thought on quality - at the big 4 clubs, who was the last player to come through the youth ranks to become an establish star? Sterling? Bellerin? So if we can't get them here, we need to produce them.
