For once I can actually say we went to a rival and earned a draw. Discipline, work rate and shape, not what you can normally say about arsenal. It is one game, we do seem to have sussed chelski a bit but it's a very good away draw. We also actually did proper fouls at the right time, which is so important. Best 0-0 we've played for a decade. We need a run of six or seven wins now. Big ask but needed.

It's an excellent starting point from which this team can begin to rebuild it's reputation. Utd Spurs city coming up not to mention Everton Watford Southampton away.
Plenty of opportunities to undo all today's excellent work but equally to build on it and finally start being taken seriously again by a very large majority of football pundits fans and opposing clubs.
The ball is very firmly where it's always been in our team and managers court.

I honestly think we have the players to do really well it's just the mind set in games like this that needs to be included in every game.

My slight disappointment is the probable loss of Welbeck as the same 11 but Sanchez for Iwobi has genuine potential.

Ozil needs to earn a spot.

as much as i like ozil, 1 must say he does not suit our team and when we play without him it seems we play with 11 men not ten, which over all is better for the team like i said i like him but we don't play a style that protects him and let's him play so we are better with out him in the team, i think that showed in buckets today ( even though iwobi was pants) it showed what we can be.

I agree and I'm a huge Mesut fan, we don't get the best out of him and he doesn't bring the best out of us in tough games.
Iwobi is simply not good enough and Elney in Ramsey place and Ramsey in Ozil/ Iwobi place would have been our best bet with what had available today, then if fit swap Le Coq for Xhaka as pound for pound game for game Le Coq gives a more reliable dependable return.

No matter how hard you try to imagine your mummy is MrsRG61, she still isn't and doing such things with your mummy is illegal as well as thoroughly disgusting, you will have social services after you and you will be fostered out. Serve me up a huge slice of the humblest pie you can find.
A performance full of effort commitment and discipline that I didn't think this current group of Arsenal players capable of, extremely worthy of being called a team today and well done them.
Posters from other pages may consider our reaction to 0 0 draw at Chelsea OTT but for us and our current players today was huge and I think is cause for real celebration.
Should we start taking titles :-) that would be silly and 4th place is still a long shot given the strength of competition now amoungst the top 7 teams but was certainly something that has made everyone stop and be it short lived or long term have to reconsider their previously unflattering opinion of the Arsenal class of 2017.
Respect where it's due and today the Arsenal players actually EARNED the right to be respected.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

17 Sep 2017 18:08:35
Yes, I'm so glad you are ordering that pie mate :)
The title is far, I think it's between city and united. But I don't see much difference between us and Chelsea for top 3 and 4 so no we are not that much behind.
There's a better spirit in the team. I think the transfer window and its rumours affected the team. So hopefully its only the better bit of arsenal we will see.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Sep 2017 18:42:55
That pesky transfer window problem Moe :-) but you do have to ask yourself why our players were affected by it at Palace last March Bournemouth in December and Everton in October:-)
Let's leave those awfully weak excuses to Arsene mate :-)
Great effort today and let's hope for more in the future rather than try and make excuses for the past that no one really takes seriously and are embarrassing at very best mate :-)

Agree0 Disagree1

17 Sep 2017 19:21:12

17 Sep 2017 21:09:17
Sorry Moe :-) that was harsh :-) .
Arsene is Arsene and I think he has been saying these things so long no one really takes a him seriously on anything much anymore, which is a shame really.
I personally wish he hadn't come out with that excuse again today and see it as the only slight on an otherwise a very good day.
Let's move on from the past excuses and all and collectively look to the future with a little more excitement and a lot less trepidation that most of us did at midday today.
The players have earned rest bite from criticism and the more they show the same effort fight determination and passion the more respect they will win back a bit at a time .

Excellent result and a fine performance. The team was set out so much better, with the wing backs clearly under instructions to defend first and foremost. Likewise Xhaka and Ramsey defended well, although at times Ramsey being a more forward orientated player was clearly in an incorrect position when defending. We started off playing too high a defensive line, which allowed Pedro to go one and one with Cech, fortunately Cech made a great save, but that was exactly why we can't play a high defensive line against quality opponents. Monreal looked like a spare part at CB, with Mustafi and Koscielny almost forming a 2 man central defence, with Monreal filling an dad role between CB and LB. I would have preferred to have seen Mertesacker in the centre of the back three with Kos and Mustafi either side. I think we looked more solid without Ozil in the desire, but I would have preferred us to start with Sanchez instead, which would have given Lacazette more support. He was so isolated and had a hard afternoon. Shocking tackle by Luiz and a three match ban is not nearly enough for a tackle that could easily have broken Kolasinac's leg. Such tackles should result in a minmum 5 match ban, which could be increased depending on the damage done. We must now press on and win the league matches coming up. Well done to Wenger and the team.

Ha Gunner62, I just can't help myself, when it's so bleedin obvious. For once Wenger listened to me and the wing backs played deep, Xhaka and Ramsey tried their best to protect the back three or rather back two, quite where Monreal was playing was beyond me, somewhere between the two CB's and Kolasinac at LWB.
Good result though and pleasing to see us set out better.

I saw posts before the Chelsea game of people saying they'd take a draw. I have to say that after the game, judging by that performance. I wouldn't take a draw. We were amazing today; we showed real grit, strength, energy and the normal naivety was absent today (save for Iwobi)
I also think it's a blessing Ozil didn't play, today it was 11 vs 11 till Luis was sent off, I hope he gets as long a ban as possible.

Happily eating a plate of crow after my prediction of an ugly 4-0 loss. Professional job by the boys, hope Welbeck and Kolasinac aren't long-term injury concerns. First home shutout of Conte's PL career at Chelsea. Says something good about our fight and spirit, let's carry it forward from today.

Sharpie you are forgiven although I'm thinking that you are telling porkies as we know that only one phone in the world has predictive text (and also a tiny screen 🤣) . On the plus side your posts are full of humour so such inadequacies (Had to look up correct spelling for that word lol) are over looked. On the plus side Arsenal have saved 2.7 million in wages on Gibbs so I'm sure we're all happy (60000 a week over 45 weeks left on contract ) god give me a place in Mensa if not the Arsenal board will do. I declare Ed007 king of predictions this weekend with an extremely impressive 3/ 7 100% spot correct scores while Ed002 gave him a run for his money getting 2/ 7 bang on.
I did notice not one of the Eds predicted the correct score for Watford v City strangely :-) although once again 007 wasn't far off with his 0 4 prediction.

17 Sep 2017 11:59:37

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I can see why it's the Arsenal fans go to position but don't worry about it, the Liverpool supports favourite position is the fetal one and if you listen very carefully you can hear the gentle murmuring of 'next year..... next year....' coming from them as they slowly rock back and forth staring blankly into space.}

17 Sep 2017 08:54:52
I'm looking forward to the match today. With the excpetion of the away league match we have had decent results against Chlesea last season, with a 3-0 home win, the 2-1 FA Cup Final win and a win on penalties in the Community shield.
My own thoughts on our struggles away to top teams is that Wenger insists on playing a suicidailly high defensive line, which the better teams exploit, by getting in behind.
Today, Wenger must select carefully. In my opinion we must defend deep with a back three of Mustafi, Mertsacker and Koscileny. I know fans will criticise the selection of Mertesacker, but played deep, say on the edge of the box, there isn't the space to exploit his lack of pace. This reminds me of John Terry who was a top defender played deep, but when AVB played a defensive highlight against us a few seasons ago, we won comfortably and JT made RVP look like an Olympic sprinter! I would play Bellerin and Kolasinac as WB's, under instruction to concentrate on defending. In front of the back three I would play Xhaka and Elneny (who had a fine game against Cologne) , as they are the best defensive midfielders available to us, with Coquelin out. They would be under instructions to protect the back three first and foremost. Then I would play Sanchez and Welbeck, with Lacazette up top. The attacking selections have plenty of pace, which I would try and use on the counter-attack.
Alas, I believe Wenger will continue to use left back Monreal as a CB and at 5'10" he lacks the height to play as a CB and his lack of pace can also be exploited in the left a of back three, whereas Mertesacker in the centre avoids one on ones with pacey wide players. I also think Wemger will play Ramsey in place of Elneny as a DM, which isn't his best position and his runs forward leave the back three exposed. I also feel he will start Ozil ahead of Sanchez, which again is a mistake in my opinion, as we need pace to counter-attack Chelsea in my system ie deep defending with DM's and WB's covering the back three and rapid players counter-attacking. The most successful teams often use such tactics, Chelsea and Man U, etc.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

17 Sep 2017 11:33:58
Your back 3 is my favoured back 3 for this season - wing backs of Bellerin and Kola make perfect sense.

The decision in the middle of the midfield will define our season - for me when we play the big boys or tough away games then it has to be Elneny and Coq until we pay for an up grade.

I think the defence has enough cover there

I then want a triangle of Sanchez and Lacazette up front supported by Ozil in the middle in the hole.

I don't think anyone who doesn't wear those certain glasses thinks we can win Sharpie mate, it's not being negative it's just a fact.
Of course it's possible because in football almost anything is possible but the fact that no one with an unbiased view thinks it's likely says so much about our current squad/ team and our recent history.
If I was the manager I would try and use this to my advantage and rather than say to the players " you are brilliant but the rest of the world is to stupid to see it " I would say " this is the opinion and reputation we as a team and club have earned and if we want people to see us differently we need to show then something different to what they've become used to seeing from us "
90 minutes work effort passion would be a great place to start.

Feeling pretty worried after seeing the team sheet guys. I'm going with 4-1. No Ozil. Alexis starts on the bench. Our back three is the best we have, and we got Bellerin and Kolasinac in their best spots.

I am highly concerned about Iwobi in the XI. Has he started a PL match yet this season, or played much at all to be honest? Looks like another lineup that's fairly stout at the back and front but weak in the middle, with guys who like to bomb into attack and leave us vulnerable to counter.

If we don't defend in a highly disciplined way we will get carved to pieces.

My prediction gives away my opinion of that likelihood.

What a lovely thought. I would be happy with a draw, which would boost our confidence after 2 consecutive wins and going into a run of winnable matches. We must avoid a heavy defeat at all costs which will sap our confidence. The key to this is to concentrate on the defensive side of our game, if you take Chelsea on at an attacking contests with a high defensive line, they will exploit this with the likes of Hazard, Pedro and Morata, never mid their wing backs.
