I bet koscielny plays against Liverpool.
I just can't see us not using him, even if he lasts 60 mins.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

11 Aug 2016 22:17:12
I think Arsene will have Sanchez v Norwich very firmly on his mind and accept losing to Liverpool without Kos wouldn't be game over on day 1 of the season where as losing Kos long term on day 1 would most definitely be.
Imagine having to go from now till January with Chambers and Holding? Top 8 at the turn of the year would be optimistic if you ask me.

If he plays Kos then it will be incompetence at its best and will get slaughtered.

He won't risk him.

Gosh some of you lot are so depressing, the season hasn't even started and your all being so negative. It's a new season, get behind your boys.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 21:57:28
If we sign a defender this week, will it really matter? If you look at our first 4 fixtures and compare to last season ( results against them ) we could be out of the title race before a new defender even found his feet! We could easily lose against Liverpool and vardys army we could easily draw against Walford and Southampton, let's hope we sign one and holding turns into tears new toni adams! Chambers is not a central defender, he does not have the aggression!

Believable0 Unbelievable3

12 Aug 2016 09:55:38
Not sure what your point is here rick. We took 8 points from these four games last season. I'd take that right now TBH.

I bet the Eds especially Ed001 will be glad when the window closees :-)
Every day someone asks " is there any interest from Arsenal in this that or the other player" they just happen to like,
It must be infuriating to have to answer so crazy questions each and everyday:-)
I'd just say " yes Arsenal are in discussions with the player you mentioned to all of them and provide updates each they for 5 years on how the negotiations are going :-)

Why do i have a sneaky feeling that Wenger has planned to buy Mahrez to play him as a striker, just like he did with Henry.

Thoughts anyone?

He probably still will, on football manager, because that's the only way he will ever get close to managing him.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 21:20:36
Wenger loves the whole Converting Wingers into Striker thingy. I think he must something against proper wide men to be honest. Mahrez as central striker not sure would work though not sure he would be Physical enough not as a lone striker would need a partner but we don't play 4-4-2. Unless he uses Sanchez more centrally and keep Mahrez out wide but again Sanchez is not as effective in the centre for me either. Giroud is the only proper CF we have TBH and maybe Akpom in the future depends how Wenger sees him. Wellbeck and Walcott are both wide me pretending to be strikers. We need proper competition for Giroud for me.

Just reading an Article about where each club will finish in the premier league and when it came to Arsenal it was
" Where do you even begin with Arsenal, impossible to leave then out of the top 4 because they always make it there but they've absolutely no chance of winning the title "

Sounds like a fair summary to me.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

11 Aug 2016 20:45:31
Was the article from Wenger?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 20:55:50
No chance Dags he'd be talking us up as only bad refs and injuries could stop us doing a premier league and champions league double.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 22:21:38
'No chance' is a pretty silly thing to say, especially considering the surprise of last season.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2016 13:26:40
3 of the other 'big 4' clubs have changed manager, with only mourinho having PL experience. Klopp, pocc and ranieri all settled. I see this being the most unpredictable league in years, could be anyones year. If you made me pick I'd go for united though.

11 Aug 2016 19:14:16

11 Aug 2016 19:59:02
I hope by Sunday evening we're not all warming to idea of getting him Dags :-)
As that will mean Liverpool have stuck an enormous pin in the Holding and Chambers bubble:- (
I met a gooner today who is totally convinced the title is between us and city and its to close to call either way plus he is equally convinced Holding is premier league ready and Chambers just needs a chance to shine.
Its so strange how some of us see things so totally differently to each other, but I guess that's what keeps everything so interesting.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 20:46:40
I think Holding will be immense for us this season.

Absolute bargain.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 20:52:04
G62, I do respect everyone's opinion. But there are times in discussions with fellow gooners where I feel punching them in the face will be my civic duty. Some people are so delusional and blind to reality it scares me.

11 Aug 2016 20:57:49
You said that about Chambers, and Debuchy, and Sanderos :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 21:23:19
I Think Holding has bright future he seem a good reader of the game but at the moment to put the inexperience of him and chambers together is risk. We need an experienced hand alongside one of them. Don't want to risk Kos to early mind so need to buy.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 21:39:23
To be fair G62, you are correct :-)

Not Senderos though.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 22:11:15
To be totally fair we all do it Dags mate, I said Caz Cech Ozil Sanchez and Kos would all be great signings plus Belerin and Ramsey would go on to be assets in the first team :-)

Bony from City days, nope.
Bony from Swansea days, yep.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 18:27:02
I don't think City's style of play suited him, that or he isn't good under big pressure like one of the eds on here suggested.

He's a similar, if better kind of striker to Giroud. Would he be my choice? Nope. Is he better than nothing at this stage? Yes.

It's come to this, adding positions that we need is not 'buying for the sake of it' even if we don't buy our first choices.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 21:13:19
Bony not sure he had a good record at the Swans but never settled at City. You wonder weather he is a striker that thrives as big fish in small pond (No disrespect to Swansea) where the pressure to perform is much less. Maybe being under the spotlight at a big club does not suit. Having said that he would be better than nothing but still backup to Giroud for me not a upgrade. I would rather him up top than Walcott if Giroud got injured.

11 Aug 2016 19:56:50

We don't need a striker and a winger. If we sign a striker Sanchez and iwobi on the wings, or sign a winger and Sanchez up front. Our team is good just missing in two areas, our strength in depth is one of the best in the league.

Based on today's crazy transfer fees - I say, invest 86m in Griezmann, 25m in Mustafi and add a winger and a right back.

The combined fee for both players is not a disaster and you can not put a price on goals.

Believable0 Unbelievable6

11 Aug 2016 15:31:38
Nope, your mate won't pay that sort of money :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 11:44:54
I don't believe we were intending to sign a CB, as we had Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gabriel, Chambers and Holding. The injury to Gabriel and the long term injury to Mertescker has meant that we have to sign one. Even then I do not beieve Wenger is desperate to sign one, as he has Koscielny back soon and Gabriel in about 8 weeks. He will then use Chambers and Holding as back up.

I pray I am wrong and we sign one. What concerns me is that if Debuchy departs, as expected, who is the cover for Bellerin? Chambers, as a RB, went backwards after he joined us. Forward-wise I would be shocked if we sign one, The problem is that top quality CB's and strikers are very short in supply and you have to pay the high prices or get left behind.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

11 Aug 2016 12:44:09
No need to pray, we've no choice but to sign a centreback. Sit back, relax and wait.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 10:01:53
What talks at all are Arsenal still holding with Valencia over Mustafi? why why why arsenal? just pay the money. Well wenger is thinking we've got Kos, Holding, Chambers, Beilik while the other two are injured. I bet he wants to take a risk with the inexperienced, young defenders. Unless he really wants his targets, he'll haggle over the prices of players he relunctantly needs just to whirl away time and then come out saying "we tried".

11 Aug 2016 11:49:36
With all due respect Willycruzzz, that is precisely why you are a fan and not running the club. Mustafi's break cause is reportable around £40m and the wages over 5 years for a player signing at £40m, seems to be in the region of £40m over the term of the contract. So the total cost for the player and 5 years wages is in the region of £80m.

If we manage to purchase him for £25m, with the same in wages over 5 years, then the total is £50m, which is a £30m saving. Yes, Wenger does have Koscileny in a couple of weeks, Gabriel in 8 weeks and Mertesacker in 5 months. He also has Chambers, Holding and Bielik. The negotiations tend to take time, as you have to agree a fee with the club and deal with the player and his agent. It isn't easy and major deals tend to take a lot of planning and rarely happen overnight.

Through a source, I have heard that Monreal is one of the fittest players we have. Apparently he looks after himself better than most other Arsenal players and trains well. This is why he was able to to take the left back role off Gibbs. Personally I think Monreal is underrated considering his stats from last season.

I suppose the positive thing is we have a strong right and left back. Wenger likes to keep his players happy, which is why he only buys first team players if there is no alternative. As much as I hate to say it, it may take a poor premier league start for Wenger and the board to take a risk.

In terms of striking options, the situation isn't quite as dire.

Is this the reason why we struggle in the window

"Arsenal have decided that they will only add world-class players to their attacking ranks this summer according to The S*n, with Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann the players they are interested in. "

We have the right intentions and like I previously said - when we want someone eg Ozil or Sanchez then we bid real money but then down to club an player

However, it means we miss out a some very good players which frustrates everyone because they would have improved our squad or even team. Eg Williams

If we want the best then we must match wages and fees plus convince players to leave great teams.

If the big boys aren't adding to their teams then some worldclass players are no longer surplus so harder to sign

Hence "no quality available "

I love the intent but we still need to sign quality players to strengthen and keep the great ones happy!

Come on Wenger - show us intent as that's all we want!

Believable0 Unbelievable2

11 Aug 2016 08:04:06
Winning trophies is fantastic but no matter what all the clubs do only one team can be champions so it's unreasonable to insist on a manager or club winning big prizes but what I think is very reasonable is to expect the club to show the ambition to do all it can to win big prizes, everyone loves a trier!
How can you only add top quality if your only prepared to pay rock bottom prices?
That's not ambition that's just a ridiculous fantasy football world.

Hi Ed01.
Reading your reply stating that Arsene will stick to his guns and Arsenal will not be ripped off with all these over inflated prices for players which I totally agree with.
Doesn't this kind of leave us hanging out to dry seeing as this seems to be the trend now and unless there is a drastic turnaround we will be left trailing behind for decent players in the transfer window.
Look! Everybody agrees and acknowledges that the figures are so ridiculous now that it's got out of control.
So what's the long term answer? That's the problem.
One way to slow it up is for everyone to unsubscribe to cable and satellite tv for a test and starve clubs of income so that they
will have to start getting real not only in transfers but in all areas.
I know it's not going to happen but the ball is rolling and gathering momentum with these ridiculous valuations and over inflated salaries and will continue to rise.
Where do you see it ending up mate. Apart from a European Super League where the teams that don't make it will end up on the scrap heap!

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - I sadly believe the European Super League is where it will end up. Clubs that are not willing to invest the money will simply fall behind. There is still a lot more money there, after all the NFL gets more and yet has a much smaller audience than the Premier League. So it is nowhere near the tipping point. I admire Wenger for wanting to stick to his guns, but it will not win trophies.}

11 Aug 2016 06:49:53
Yeah.
I can't disagree with that at all. To be honest anyone with a bit of vision can see that's where it's heading.
But also its going to end up where the ordinary person is not going to be able to afford to watch a top quality game as is now really and the subscription costs to watch a European Super League game will be through the roof .
I can see clubs that don't make it falling by the wayside and the lower divisions can go one of two ways. Being that they will not survive OR people will flock to them as it will be the only affordable football to watch.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 07:24:59
I for one am fed up with Sky and BT -> considering unsubscribing due to ridiculous cost and getting fed up not winning / competing. One person will not make a difference and I still love watching my club too much despite the lack of trophies.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2016 07:49:36
I decided around April last season to ditch my sports channels for this season and have a match of the day season instead.
Not only for financial reasons but also because I'm fed up planning my life around Arsenal games while the club has such a lack of ambition.
I figure taking a step back will make me less angry and frustrated than I have allowed myself to be the last couple of seasons and I will be able to enjoy the wider premier league more rather than be in a constant angry at Arsene and Arsenal state of mind.
Mind you when we signed Xhaka so early and bid for Vardy I was seriously reconsidering my decision:-) but it was a false alarm and the same old Arsenal I'm so fed up with emerged in the end so it's back to plan A.
