Can we expect Barcelona to come in for bellerin? Just recieved 200m and i know we say he isn't for sale but if they chuck say Β£60m at us can we really refuse that when we have ox who can play there.

They've already signed a RB. I'd expect that money to go on Verratti/ Coutinho and Dybala/ Dembele.

Not arsenal related but if 1 of the Ed's wouldn't mind answering. What would happen if a player with say 4 years left on their contract decided they wanted to retire would they have to pay back their transfer fee or something along those lines?
Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No, the issue would be the remaining contract which they would have to negotiate an out with the club.}

03 Aug 2017 20:18:26
Didn't Craig Johnson do something similar at Liverpool in the 80s or early 90s?
All the rules have probably been changed since then I'm sure but he is the only player in the modern era I can remember to just quit football completely and not come back.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he went home to look after his sick sister, bit of a different situation.}

03 Aug 2017 20:29:32
Yes I remember that now cheers Ed001, he went on to invent a new football boot after he retired I think didn't he? and if so was it the predator with the bits of old car tye attached ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it was the Predator he invented mate.}

03 Aug 2017 20:43:54
Cheers Ed, he was a good player for Liverpool back in the day and always seemed like a nice bloke too.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I loved him, he was great. LFC were gutted about him going.}

03 Aug 2017 20:54:33
Mind you back then few Liverpool players weren't great players, Steve Mcmahon ( dodgy spelling:-) Ray Houghton and a lot more too, you seemed to have a real knack of finding good players and turning them into really top players on a regular basis back then mate.

Hi Eds
Many thanks for your input over the last few weeks.
It would seem that we are having difficulty offloading our fringe players, mainly due to their wage demands.
I remember reading a while back that we seem to over pay our ''average'' players whilst not being prepared to pay our best players the top wages they seem to expect these days.
It seems that our poorly constructed wage system has come back to haunt us!
Goonerbm.

03 Aug 2017 18:14:23
We tried to tie young prospects down by giving them super wages for non first team football in the hope they would automatically fill the viod of players who left meaning we had ready made replacements on tap with no transfer fees to payout and could simply bank the money from sales of players who decided to leave.
In principle it was a brilliant plan and it would have worked to " if it wasn't for those pesky kids not making the grade " :-)

I know some people are disappointed about the lack of oppomistim for our season ahead but I think it's a simple case of low expectation because of our last decade of simply not being competitive coupled with the fact that very little has changed to give people something to think " hang on this different "
Should we fail to challenge this season again what will change next season? Who will be our manager should that happen? At which club will Theo Ramsey be turning out for in the 2018 19 season regardless of how they or we do this season.
I think until people can actually see things within the club being done differently then it's difficult to get excited about this season being any more competitive than the last 10 or so seasons.
An acceptance of things being what thry are has simply replaced anger and disappointment and for me that's the only difference at Arsenal this season.

I know Mark mate, the only thing that really seems to have changed is the passion levels from the fans, very few fans seem to be busting with excitement for the season ahead and only very few seem to the energy to even be angry anymore, there just seems to be a very high level of acceptance of " it is what it is " from most fans right now.

I think we all want things to go well mate but just can't be bothered to get to upset if they don't anymore.
I know for me personally I'm quite looking forward to the Europa league as it's something different to us and not covered in the same predictable disappointment we have come to know and accept with the premier league and champions league campaigns for so many consecutive seasons now.
I'm happy to be in the Europa league as i would struggle to find much enthusiasm for yet another champions league last 16 exit as 8 on the bounce is quite enough for me :-) a change of European scenery is most welcome in my opinion.

I have a small question I'd like to ask ed002. Not arsenal related as such but still interested me. We was talking at work and someone said PSG will make their money back through sponsors and shirt sales easily with neymar then went on to say united made most of pogbas fee back through shirt sales. Which made me wonder and I apologise if this is a simple Manner but do clubs make much money through shirt sales. Or is it the maker of the kit (puma, Nike) that are making all the money on that.

Thanks for your time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - He is wrong. The money from shirt sales goes to the manufacturer, the distributor and the retailer, who can make extra adding numbers and names to the shirts. If the club are the retailer (club shop, club website etc.) then they get the retailers cut. The manufacturer (Adidas, Umbro, Nike etc.) pay the club an amount each year which allows them to manufacture and sell the shirts using the correct logos etc.. That is how they justify the money given to the club. So if you walk in to a high street store and buy a Liverpool or Arsenal shirt - nothing goes to the club. There are a few clubs that have negotiated different deals with manufacturers (Real Madrid with Adidas and Barcelona with Nike are the two obvious examples) based upon joint reselling ventures. So the income from shirts is fixed to the Β£xM or whatever Adidas, Nike etc. pay the club plus a small amount for reselling through the club retail outlets (shop, web).

PSG may well get a better deal from their shirt manufacturer but neither MU nor PSG make money back from shirt sales for players they buy. Right now Arsenal get about Β£30M a year from Puma regardless of the number of shirts they sell - when they move to Adidas next year it will go up - but again regardless of the numbers of shirts sold.}

03 Aug 2017 13:50:11
I'm sorry ed. arsenal moving to adidas?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No, it was an example - right now the Arsenal kit deal is low (around half of that of Chelsea), when they get a new one (with Puma, Adidas or whoever) it will leap up - the same is true with PSG and with Neymar it will leap up a lot. But you get the picture.}

03 Aug 2017 14:20:19
Ah I See, sorry. I remember when arsenal arranged the deal with puma. Only a year or two ago and at the time it was the second highest in England. Goes to show the, possibly unsustainable, rate of inflation in football.

For all we might not be capable of in the league this season we do for the first time in s a lot of seasons have a real chance of European success.
Instead of being champions league make weights we suddenly find ourselves as Europa league big boys and I think it would be really positive for the club to go all out to win.
It's not been beneath Chelsea and Utd to go for it and the Europa league has a much bigger appeal across Europe than it does in this country so if we were to win this trophy our standing in world football.
Being in this competition certainly didn't put out 2 new boys off joining us so maybe we should be more open to respecting the Europa league and what it can do for us as a club long term.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

03 Aug 2017 11:43:09
If we keep a lot of players then we will certainly have the squad depth to field a strong side in Europa League games and it wouldn't affect our side too much for domestic games either side of the fixture.

Ospina, Gabriel, Mertesacker, Holding, Gibbs, Elneney, Coquelain, Iwobi, Walcott, Welbeck, Giroud all players that will not be in starting XI that could play in europe.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2017 12:16:21
It took utd and Chelsea to play their best players to win the europa league Detriot mate and we shouldn't under estimate the other teams within it and we certainly shouldn't continue to live off our past reputation and hope that will be good enough to deliver in the present.
Realistically the Europa is our best chance of winning a top prize this season and doing that won't be easy.
The premier league and champions league are the top 2 prizes available and the europa league is number 3 because it offers not only champions league football but also a real trophy unlike the 4th place trophy that only we can see :-)

To the question of where we predict we will end up next season.
Well I predicted a squad with names we never really heard of before for next season and mid table I'm afraid.
So far we have Kolasinac on a free that I never heard of. Lacazette I heard of but really just through the rumours that built up since the end of last season. that's as far as we have got up till now.
Mid table! Yeah why not forget Sanchez he can't work miracles on his own all the time. I just don't get Ozil I'm missing something with the hype that surrounds him. So far and let's be fair what we've seen if Lacazette in the friendlies isn't impressive and how long is he going to take to settle
in? . So I'm preparing myself for a rocky ride next season with plenty of moans and groans and Wenger Outs again! .
Horrible thoughts I know.
Best player I've seen so far is Reiss Nelson can we keep hold of him? I wouldn't even put him out on loan I would play him let him develop with us. I hope Wenger plays him on Saturday and our opener against Leicester.

03 Aug 2017 09:01:42
Jelfy we play Saturday in the Charity Shield, aside from that Lansera I don't agree with you.

My post was in jest the other day about Lacazette, anyone who puts weight to an argument after pre season friendlies is a bit daft otherwise Bayern Munich will not be winning the Bundesliga and getting knocked out in the group stages.

Lacazette hasn't been here 5 minutes and Kosalinac looks a great addition in an area we needed to strengthen.

Whilst I believe Sanchez will go I'm not losing my head over it.

There is still over a month left in the window to move players on and bring others in. Everyone bar Sanchez has a bad season and that includes Ozil but he is class.

We will not be struggling to make 6th, we are not mid table or even close.

There is so much negativity around here it has even spread to ed025 but we really are not the utter rubbish a lot have convinced themselveslves and others that we are.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - my view is not negative stoner more realistic, city, utd and chelsea have stronger squads and liverpool spurs and possibly everton will be battling arsenal for that 4th spot, liverpool look good to me and would probably be favourites for 4th and that leaves you and us for 5th berth...dont ask me to choose mate.. :)

03 Aug 2017 09:23:00
Ahh I'd never ask you to chose ed but personally I'm certain we'll be in the top four and that's being realistic, strengthening on paper doesn't always translate to the pitch especially when you are buying many.

Liverpool still look good going forward but not so good at the back. Spurs are standing still. None of United's signings have filled me with dread.

Chelsea need more depth but City will for me be the team to beat. It will be interesting to see how the Toffees do ed with money to spend.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - making lots of signings will not automatically make a team sronger in the short term stoner i agree, i guess im just being a bit pessimistic where arsenal are concerned as i dont wast to build up any false hope mate..

03 Aug 2017 09:29:36
im with eds as it stands battle for 4th. if i'm the board i'm getting two players in min possible three to give us the best chance.

im happy with the two signings but need more.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - there is still time derby i suppose but im with you on the need to add more mate, last year was seen as a blip but if it happens again then its a crisis and the top players will want out...and thats a very slippery slope..

03 Aug 2017 09:31:47
We won't finish lower than 7th or higher than 4th in my opinion
As much as all our problems of the past decade won't suddenly disappear and players who have never been consistently good enough suddenly become capable of challenging Niether will we suddenly become Stoke West Bromwich albino or West ham level.
The big boys have improved and have managers with recent proven track records of success and Spurs were way to strong for us last season and will continue to improve under Poch.
Nothing has dramatically changed at Arsenal on or off the pitch so why will our end result be different?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - fair point mate..

03 Aug 2017 09:35:55
It's not just the teams on paper that have changed Stoner other clubs have managers who demand success and a board and fans that expect them to build a team capable of being competitive.
Everything is different at Arsenal compared to other big clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2017 11:17:49
gunner I really don't blind myself to our short comings, we are perpetual under achievers for various reasons, I just, after one season outside the top four, don't believe that will now be our lot.

We are much better than that, if we repeat it again this season then I may jump on board the we are pants band wagon but I'm not having that now. We have signed two very good players in positions of weakness with I'm certain more to come.

I'm liking the 3 at the back and Koscielny, Mustafi and Holding will be great back there.

I believe we'll be a minimum of top 3 mate and I'll think we'll have a bloody got go at the Europa too. 😁.

03 Aug 2017 13:06:21
Fair play to you Stoner I hope your right and I'm wrong mate, but I can't see how anything at Arsenal has changed too much other than we have 2 good editions and are going to lose our biggest asset in the next few weeks.
I just think other clubs have more ambitious steaks running through them and managers who simply have very high expectations of the players and the people who employ them.
At Arsenal it's all become a bit too relaxed and a title bid would be nice but it really isn't essential for us to all carry on as per usual.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2017 12:34:04
Much respect ed 25, always appreciate your contribution but I think you are too negative on us at the moment. First, if we can just have a normal number of injuries instead of the absurd level of last year, then our depth will match the top 3, for rotations etc and surpass Everton and Spurs. Second we have added some key pieces to help fortify the new formation. And third we were already looking much improved the last half dozen games last year. Count me in on this year ;-)

Prediction, win the Shield, deep runs in Europe and FA cup. And in the mix of a tightly grouped top 3 in the league, with one of the favorites dropping off BC of chemistry or injuries, guessing Chelsea, a battle between Blues and Spurs for 4th would suit me fine and if Everton pips the man both, all the better!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - you paint a very rosy picture rooster and i have to say no one would be happier than me mate if that came to pass..

03 Aug 2017 02:20:27
I'm pleased that Ospina is staying, allowing Martinez to go out on loan to gain valuable ex[erience. Reports that Wilshere wants to stay and fight for his place are also pleasing as he is an ideal replacement for the injured Cazorla. Hopefully he will react well to the situation and fight for his place and an extension to his contract. WE must now concentrate on getting the three players entering the last year of ther deals to extend their deals, a positive start to the season may help in this regard. I believe Ozil will stay as I can't see any club paying the transfer fee and wages required, Ox may be tempted to stay by a combination of high wages and a first team spot in his favoured central position. I see little hope of retaining Sanchez, as I believe from reports that he wants to sign for City. It is vital that we sign a suitable replacement. Assuming thiat my take on the three players in question is correct, I can only see us making one more signing, the replacement for Sanchez, as we have a very full squad, even allowing for the likely departures.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2017 06:52:27
I can only see a replacment for Sanchez, if as expected he departs and possibly a replacement for Ox if leaves, as we will need cover at RWB.
I don't see a CB, as we have Kos, Merte, Gabriel, Mustafi, Holding and Chambers. Even if Chambers departs, we have Monreal and Kolasinac who can both fill in. The same goes for a CDM player, as we have Xhaka, Coquelin and Elneny, as well as Ramsey, Ox and Wilshere who can play there.
Wenger has stated that we have a very full squad and that he wanted to sign 2 or 3 players. We have signed 2 to date, hence my comments above.

Wenger hasn't encouraged strong personalities at the club for many years. I can't see us buying a midfield general, but Xhaka has it in him, if he is allowed to flourish. Unfortunately these days Wenger stamps out any signs of such players. Don't forget Vieira used to put his foot in and get sent off fairly regularly. However, as soon as Xhaka started putting it about, Wenger clearly stopped him.
