Good morning Ed's.
Reiss Nelson has started 18/ 33 games at Feyenoord in the league in what has been a relatively successful/ standard season for the Rotterdam club.
Are you able to shed any light on whether Arsenal consider this to have been a successful loan i. e. that it has served its purpose and seen progress in his game?
Do you know what Arsenals overall view of Nelson is?
Does Nelson have a future at Arsenal, short and medium term or will he be sold in the summer?
Could he be seen as a successor to the much maligned (& perhaps underwhelming) Pépé who does sound like he is earmarked for the exit door?

Canon Max Farnham

{Ed002's Note - Reiss Nelson (RW/AM) May look to run down his contract next season. Arsenal don't have space for him in the first team but would like to extend and send him on loan again. Meanwhile they will look to add a winger which will push him further down the pecking order. Feyenoord would certainly take another loan. If he won't extend this summer, there will be opportunities.}

Just to help contextualise why I think Arteta is bang average currently, we have lost more games in the league this season than Brighton. More than Crystal Palace, more than Manchester United in their worst ever premier league season. We have had no "distraction" of European football. We spent £150m in the summer, with mixed results: Tavares, Lokonga have proved disappointing, White possibly OK but never at £50m, Odegaard, Ramsey and Tomiyasu definite hits and improvements. But remember it was Arteta who sold a brilliant goalkeeper in the first place. Six red cards this season, thirteen in total under his tenure. Not ideal.

We had high standards set by George Graham initially, then Arsene Wenger. We all know We her went on five seasons too long, meaning we have now endured a decade at least of under-performance and relative mediocrity, allowing the Spurs down the road to finish above us for the last four seasons, this rendering St Totteringhams Day obsolete from the calendar.
I don't think we have a divine right to win, I don't expect us to get everything right overnight, but we have dallied over managerial appointments when we could have had Conte for example. We could have had Ancelotti. We could have had Allegri. But no, we go for a rookie, a pretender, a huge gamble. With high risk, comes potentially high rewards, but if we equate this appointment in a business career, do you put gambles in charge of high profile appointments in your business?
No, you put proven winners there, and keep your gambles lower profile, less damaging if the gambles fail to come off, progressive and developmental if they come off and promote those at a later date to higher profile roles once they have proved themselves.
Arsenal didn't.
Arteta was such a gamble. He may, he might just still come off. And I hope he does, but it's on a knife edge.

He had the last laugh though.

3.) 19 Feb 2022 20:50:59

So Kane wasn't just playing to catch Guardiola's eye Raver ??

5.) 20 Feb 2022 07:15:56
Most definitely Sally.
My thoughts exactly.

06 Feb 2022 19:30:18
Go, Mo.

Why don't we - myself included (although I have given him some support) - rate and value Mohammed Elneny more?

He's not eye-catching, for sure, unlike some of our wonderful midfielders like, er, Mr Xhaka, who rarely fails to catch the eye, but for mainly negative reasons.

I like Mo.

Mo should not go.

I agree, shame he didn't get his winners medal last night Cannon.

2.) 07 Feb 2022 21:13:37
Good squad player. that’s it.

3.) 08 Feb 2022 22:03:17
Couldn’t agree more. Cost us virtually nothing, is an international midfielder, doesn’t seem to cause an issue that he is not first XI, and works his socks off when picked or bought on as sub. Do I want to see him playing in CM away to Man City, no, that should be Partey and Bissouma if I had my way, but keeping him in the squad is a no brainier, at least until someone home grown is ready to come through and offer better.

I really truly hope we don't sign some Kia-induced players this window.

I've read many opinions/ comments on Coutinho for example. He could, maybe, be a decent player, but I question why a £120m player can barely get a kick at a club "in transition", but more importantly, who would he impede by signing?
ESR? Odegaard? Patino? Hutchison?

I know we are far from the finished article and have a gulf to overcome from being flat-track bullies to being serious contenders, but having been a voiciferous "Arteta Oot" commentator, it would seem madness not at least to give him his chance to complete the transformation.
I admire Arteta's PEA stance, for example - not a moment too soon, but also, we can't say Arteta didn't give him a chance.
I am also v anti Xhaka, but even he seems to be making an effort these days.

I'd love Lacazette to be retained - a two year contract surely wouldn't be wasted, would it? - and got this and the summer transfer window to see the remainder of the players clearly not in our plans moved on - Maitland-Niles, Leno, Kolasinac, perhaps Mari and/ or Chambers, Saliba if he isn't considered to be right for us, PEA (just give him to Newcastle) , possibly Pépé, Nketiah, even Balogun (although there is a player who needs a confidence boost in the first team) . and Xhaka for me.

The only position we really could do with strengthening at is the dreaded "defensive" midfielder (I hate that term) , to replace Xhaka, push Partey and have Elneny (I like him; rarely let's us down, admittedly isn't a world-beater) as back-up.

We have some superb youngsters, and it disturbs me to think that players such as ESR or Bukayo could be tempted away, but that kind of talk is bound to happen, but Arsenal supporters would surely be incensed if they were tempted to leave because older "more experienced" players such as Coutinho were imported to block their progress.

I heard Alan Brazil this morning, usually a dinosaur who I find hard to listen to, dismiss Brendan Rogers' latest whining about fixture congestion, physical demands and "tiredness" of modern-day players, as utter tripe and I find it impossible not to agree with him here.
We have young, super-fit, über-trained, cared-for, hungry youngsters, playing on billiard-baize pitches, with much less physical contact, and with supreme sports science available to aid recuperation post-match. We will play tops 50 matches this season, and have a squad-full of players.
Asking ESR, Martinelli, Saka, et al to play this much, surely isn't too much?
I bet they want to play, so please Arsenal, if we are committed to the current "process" (and, currently, it is bearing fruit, so why not) please don't buy some old has-been on the off-chance they might reproduce form of five years ago.

Happy New Year all.

There are no footballing reasons to sign Courtiniho so if it was to happen it would be another none footballing decision by the club and put a dampener on the flickers of optimism that are currently happening.

For me Arteta has earned the right to see out this season but must be assessed honestly at the end of the season and again for me 4th or even 5th would be success compared to what's gone before under Arteta and he would have earned the right to be Arsenal manager next season but another 8th place finish surely should not be dressed up as anything more than a 3rd consecutive lowest league position in the 40 years that proceeded Arteta becoming Arsenal manager.

Happy new year Max ????.

2.) 31 Dec 2021 12:52:46
I wonder if the thinking (if it happens) is Coutinho as a straight replacement for Pepe?

3.) 31 Dec 2021 13:23:34
Happy holidays Max - nice post and I think Mikel deserves a run to the end of the season. However given the tripe out there - I’m looking at how he manages the team, makes intelligent in game decisions, plays to our strengths, selects / drops players and how he generally gets us playing. We need to be better than we are especially with no Europe distractions. I’m not impressed with how he’s handled PEA as he should have done it weeks earlier and to do it for an approved trip to see his sick mum is a bit off. Right outcome but wrong reason in my book.
If Arteta shows that and comes 6th I’m fine - if he doesn’t and we still come 4th or 5th then I’m not. How he manages will impact us more next season and after that rather than a lucky 4th due to crap competition.

4.) 31 Dec 2021 13:29:20
That would be an upgrade Sally and a great thought but ultimately means he’s a squad player or a youngster is dropped. I’d be happy if it provided more competition, it’s a level playing field for team selection and Mikel can actually manage a difficult player. He didn’t manage Willian, Ozil, PEA, Saliba, Matteo etc very well.

5.) 31 Dec 2021 13:58:52
If it were to happen Sally it would be at a cost to our young guns who are 100% responsible for everything that is to be optimistic about the club right now.

IF it happened I wouldn't be watching Coutinho play while Martineli or ERS made way for him, it would definitely be the last straw for me, but fortunately I don't think it will come to that ???.

6.) 31 Dec 2021 15:39:31
If Coutiniho was signed he wouldn't be competing with anyone for anything he'd be him and 10 others, his wages and no doubt resigning assurances would take care of that.
He's actually a good player but nothing about him coming to us would be about football.

{Ed014's Note - two signings I never want to see happen, Lukaku and Coutinho. Well unless they’re for someone else.

7.) 31 Dec 2021 16:48:54
Well Ed014 you are 100% safe on one those and I'd say pretty much 90% safe on the other one too mate.

I think there is more chance of the Tory party following their own rules than either of them becoming Arsenal players this January ???.

{Ed014's Note - phew that’s a result ?

08 Dec 2021 05:54:09
Divock Origi anyone?

Although with our mediocre, learning-on-the-job "Manager" who couldn't pick his nose let alone a starting line up, it barely matters.

Whenever he gets something right - albeit weeks after everyone else with eyes and a brain has been baying for it - in dropping PEA for example, he balances it up with some utter bobbins such as recalling the consistently average* Xhaka.

* Generous description, but keeping language clean.

James Ward-Prowse. That's who we need in midfield, along with ESR, Saka, Lokonga et al.

Canon Max Farnham

1.) 08 Dec 2021 13:14:11
I haven't been overly impressed with Lokonga to be fair. Ward Prowse would be a good signing but doubt he would leave Southampton to come to us when its clear for everyone to see, Xhaka won't be dropped. So its going to always be Partey and Xhaka in the middle.

2.) 08 Dec 2021 20:47:58
We can only play players we’ve got obviously and Partey/ Lokonga can’t play every game. And the player you Xhaka is the one MA didn’t bought.

As bad as Pepe is should play more because that’s what we’ve got and Saka can’t play every game furthermore he’s been off it since the summer.

As bad as MA is maybe he got a very difficult task on his hand.

Just a different aspect to consider.

3.) 08 Dec 2021 22:25:50
Big fan of Ward-Prowse Max, and think he would do a good job alongside Partey. However we seem to prefer going overseas for our midfield. For me Bissouma would also be an excellent addition, has premiership experience and would allow us to play a 4-1-4-1 formation, which also would allow us to move Partey well away from having to pass the ball close to our penalty area, something he seems completely incapable of doing.

{Ed014's Note - you should check out the Southampton page, they don’t even want JWP in their team.

4.) 09 Dec 2021 20:51:24
I don’t think he has had the best of seasons Ed. However at least he is in credit, more than what we could say for Xhaka. If they don’t want JWP can we see if they want to swap him for Xhaka. Maybe we can through in Elneny, PEA and Pepe to sweeten the deal?

{Ed014's Note - I’ve not seen a lot of him lately but always seemed pretty good to me but the reality is we really need better, easier said than done.

That and we’d probably need to add Chambers to that quartet and 62 would never sanction that!?

5.) 10 Dec 2021 07:48:04
You can't let Hansom Chambers go, Calums outstanding looks are one the few reliable things about Arsenal.
In the words of Yoser Hughes
" Calum Chambers, better looking by far " ????????????.

6.) 10 Dec 2021 00:06:10
Easy Ed, don’t set 62 off, it is nearly Christmas ? after all!

{Ed014's Note - good point Epping I’ll withdraw that last offer!?

Before he’d scored four today, I’d take Jesus in a heartbeat. He doesn’t get to start that often in an amazing team. If think we’d be lucky to have him.

I couldn’t agree more Epping. Xhaka has been better this half of the season, but that’s it, and, as you say, his improvement has been from awful to occassionaly adequate.
I’d keep Mo ahead of Granit everyday.
