Arsene should go into politics as a spin doctor when he quits football :-)
Apparently it's the 18 teams below us who are to blame for us not winning the league because we did all we could by beating Leicester home and away plus we had to travel to both city and utd in the second half of the season which made things more difficult for us than Tottenham and Leicester who I can only assume only had to play them at home :-)
I will give him his due his extremely consistent.

I still fail to comprehend the critisicm aimed at Wenger. Yes, we all get a little frustrated at times, but in the cold light of day, he is clearly a top manager and has the record to prove it. We did better than any of the top clubs this season. With the squad shed of players that were no longer good enough and three players brought in, we will enter next season in good shape.
As I have already stated, none of the top managers are available at present, with the exception of Mourinho, who many Arsenal fans don't want to manage. I asked recently for a name to replace Wenger and was given Simeone. Yes, he would be a suitable replacement, but I can't see him leaving Athletico Madrid any time soon. In addition, it has been reported that he doesn't speak English.
Pochettino has been hailed as the next great manager, but his record doen't show that yet. Koeman has taken over at Southampton and has exceeded Pochettino's record, without many of the stars that were sold. The Toot slumped in the run in and like Leicester, I don't believe they will find things so easy next season, with the big boys re-energised and the demands of playing at least 6 CL matches, as well as having many players playing in the Euros this summer.
I believe the fans disloyalty towards Wenger has been as a result of being complacent with his consistency.

You "still fail to comprehend criticism of Wenger"?
Why?
We haven't been close to winning the league in 12 YEARS!
What other club aside from Auxerre in the late 20th century would stand by such a managers' results?

Criticism of Wenger doesn't necessarily refer to his first ten years at the club it refers to the last ten.

Whoopee do for consistency! let's oscilate between 4th and 2nd forever. Hoorah.

16 May 2016 20:23:43
So, we finish 2nd in the league, our best position for 11 years.

Some say it's because the other big boys have slipped up, bit harsh.

So, good or bad season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - bad for me dags, it was there for the taking and with 1 good import it would have been different..runner up trophies mean nothing mate..

16 May 2016 20:33:50
71 points says it all surely Dags?
Impossible to argue that's a very low return for any team finishing 2nd.
80+ points is where serious premier league challengers hang out and were getting further and further from that mate.

16 May 2016 20:55:21
Definately bad = on reflection we haven't turned up in the CL for years, and overall we desperately need a 20 plus striker. It's insane that Wenger refuses to accept that is the case. Vardy 24, Aguero 24, Kane 25, Giroud 16. Having a prolific striker is absolutely non negotiable, if we don't get one, next season is going the same as the last 10. Since Henry left, RVP came off the bench for one season then knifed us, we've not had anyone close since. And we need to sort out the injury problems, Leicester completed the whole season with the same squad, we had 5 or 6 players out half the season. The list is Ozil, Sanchez, Ox, Wilshere, Walcott, Welbeck, Ramsay, Cazorla all out one month plus. something is really dodgy there. Still finishing above spurs kept it from being a disaster. Buy a striker! :)

Agree5 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im with you baggins mate..

16 May 2016 21:23:11
Have to totally agree with all of the above.

Giroud had his joint best season with us (16 PL goals) , but we do need a 25+ man up top.

Agree4 Disagree0

16 May 2016 21:35:15
Love Olly but 20% of those 16 goals came yesterday against a very very poor Vila who never left the beach last summer, Aguero would have got 40+ if he'd had the chances Girouds had this season.

Agree3 Disagree1

{Ed025's Note - olly would make a fine back up striker, or even at times as part of a duo up front for me G62, but arsenal need someone prolific if they want to win the title mate..

16 May 2016 21:51:07
hi DG
good season for me, yes a bit disappointed but.
second and the pleasure finish above spuds again:)
haha, made my season really:)
roll on august:)

16 May 2016 21:53:03
Totally agree Ed an option from the bench or even as you say as part of an old fashioned big target man in a striking partnership.
It would be a good alternative to the Arsenal tipy tapy predictable style of play every time and wpuld certainly make opposition managers have to work a bit harder in the week leading up playing us.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - thats right G62, for me you need an alternative to all that tippy tappy lark which is ok while it works, but there is nothing wrong with the occasional whack up field and the big man knocking it down for his partner to slot ala toshack and keegan...showing my age a bit there mate.. :)

16 May 2016 22:10:55
Do you know what mate I was thinking Toshack and Keegan too :-)

Agree1 Disagree0

16 May 2016 23:10:41
Toshack and Keegan?
Nah, before my time :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - yeah right.. :)

17 May 2016 10:14:21
For me its a bad season, finishing second but with less points than the previous couple of years, dosn't mean improvement. Second is like the best of the losers for me. As we all agree we need a prolific striker and his name is higuain.

15 May 2016 17:22:15
Ed25 can I have them straws now please mate 👍🏻.

{Ed025's Note - they are in the post SLB, That 4th place trophy is a thing of the distant past now mate.. :)

So, Wenger has confirmed that he's looking to bring in 3 players during the summer window.

I think the majority of us would agree that the 3 positions requiring most attention are CB, DM and ST.

With that in mind, which 3 players are we after?

My ideal (if somewhat fantasy) signings are Benatia, Xhaka/ Kante and Griezmann.

My realistic choices are Manolas, Xhaka/ Kante and Batshuayi/ Sturridge.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

16 May 2016 17:16:25
So your ideal players cost a combined ~150mln while your realistic 3 costs ~100mln?

I think a realistic spead for 3 players would be more like 50-60mln!

Agree1 Disagree0

16 May 2016 17:26:40
From my sources we are interested in

Xhaka

Reus

Lewandowski.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 May 2016 18:13:20
Id take Williams at 5m Kante 20m and Sturridge 20m leaving plenty of Mooney in the kitty + fees recieved on sales for squad quality strengthing which is obviously needed given our record with long term injury.
We need much much better competition for places to raise both quality and mentality of the squad.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 May 2016 18:57:36
We can be interested in as many as we want . means nothing

We certainly won't be spending 100 million . dream on.

Raid Dortmund for Subotic, Mkhitaryan and Aubemayang.

£100m and we will walk the league next season.

PROGRESS?
Since the 2014 season (the year Ozil arrived) our progression in the league has been.
2014 4th
2015 3rd
2016 2nd

2014 79 ots
2015 75 pts
2016 71 pts.

So an early prediction for next year has to be 1st with 67 points!

Believable7 Unbelievable0

16 May 2016 13:27:48
Yes Melbourne, is this years second in the league down to others under performing or us progressing. Personally i think this season has masked very grave errors and i think it is very wrong to say second is an improvement. In league position it is but in real terms is it?

Agree7 Disagree1

16 May 2016 15:21:16
for me what has been our main issue has been our forward play.

too many intricate passes with no end result. while they play pass the ball the entire defense moves up. then they lose that one ball and its counter time and its as if they have not learnt about how to play the game.

when coq played and sat deep it worked, once he was injured it was nothing but a nightmare.

teams came to the emirates knowing our striker was not going to score at will, and all they had to do was keep their defense tall, keep the midfield tight and sit back and counter to give them a chance and it worked.

i do not think we need wholesale changes, but a CB who can command and take responsibility is vital.

if Xhaka is who we are trying to sign, then its the right direction, he reminds me a lot of xabi alonso. always makes the sensible plays. not extravagant but sensible and knows how to read the opposition defense.

besides him we need to get that striker that giroud just is not.
someone like lewandowski, dybala, neymar.

someone the opposition looks at and goes, don't let the ball touch his feet. then you have defenders all worried, about sanchez and campbell, iwobi and ox who bring pace and directness and then you have ozil and hopefully xhaka and ramsey, caz and jack who can pull the strings

yes wenger is right we need 3 players. a CB, a CM/ CDM and a striker.

i have no idea who is the striker we will end up with but if we have to spend 90-100 mill to get one it should be imperative we do that, as all the other big teams have the striker they need to score 20-25 goals.

Best/ Worst hangover in years.

I know there isn't really anything to celebrate and this was still the season we "should have won", but I am still pleased.

We all know Wenger isn't leaving, so let's hope some of the fan remarks have opened his eyes.

Positive Signs:
1. Clearing out excess (3 past-expiry but loyal servants out)
2. Admission that Welbeck is out for the season. Not "like a new signing"

Three players is ambitious, but one defensive player, one midfielder and a CLASS forward and the squad will have a lot of depth.

16 May 2016 11:34:10
Nice post, I share your optimism :) But who's the third loyal but expired player Billybob?

Rosicky, Arteta and?

Agree0 Disagree0

16 May 2016 12:20:13
Calling flamini loyal might be a bit fo stretch given how he left to AC Milan, but he did what he could.

He is an ageing player that has had a lot of injury problems. Not that technically gifted. But he did give his all during his 2nd spell (his all wasn't anywhere near enough. )

16 May 2016 17:03:21
Flamini was truly awful, shocking, an embarrassment.
I couldn't understand why Wenger kept Flamini and Arteta this season.

on my last post on 26th april i did say spurs ain't got 2nd nailed on yet and that if results go our way we can still get 2nd.
i know we messed up as per usual but even after them having their best season and we have one of our worse they still can't finish above us.
i know it ain't about just finishing above them but after we crumbled and them giving it large i will take finishing above them.
i know you'll get some spurs fans saying all we have to go on about this season is finishing above them but even after their title bid failed they blatantly would have still been bragging if it was them finishing 2nd.

now to look forward to reading about the 20 different strikers and midfielders we'll be linked with and not get any lol.

been great banter on here as usual this season.

I've been saying that it's notify of the question that we finished second to which I was told I was clutching at straws and not in my wildest dreams.

Goonermark didn't you fail as well I your title bid. No Chelsea, city, Utd etc and you didn't win it either. Also our worst season in years, you haven't finished 2nd for 11 years so how can it be your worst season . The fact is spurs are very disappointed for finishing 3rd while you kot are going crazy for coming 2nd shows the way the two clubs are heading.

Not as bad a season as some thought. Very little money spent, yet improved on last year.
So with a good few new signings, things are looking Rosie.
We will be loosing some real characters, so a big thank you to them
But now it time for the euros,
So have a good summer and hopefully the Welsh flag will do GB proud.

with respect welshgooner we haven't improved on last year. other sides apart form Leicester have under performed. Our standard of performance at times have been awful re Watford. It is the managers job to ensure the players are able to perform to the games requirements Wenge has failed on that. He failed, knowing were were not scoring to either motivate or buy a player to sort that problem.
Tactically we were awful this season, walking football is for blokes my age not PL players. Possession doesn't win games, goals do.
We ended where we did due to Spurs imploding, as fun as that is, don't let it blind us to the problems staring back at us. Major surgery must happen in this window or we will have worse problems next season. Chelsea Man City and L'pool will improve and dare we say it so will Spurs.

Agree7 Disagree0

16 May 2016 10:38:06
Welsh welsh welsh, yes we finished second the table doesn't lie. But the truth is we snuck in on the final lap after all the front runners had engine failures and punctures and the leader had flown months ago. We got less points than last year, let in more goals scored less, went out of the champs league with our usual whimper and never really had a fs or league cup run of note. Same old problems surfaced and missed a great chance to capitalise on the big pkayers imploding. So yes second but a real bitter taste, not very convincing and not celebration, no way.
