Just read that Gallas has been slating our players mentality as the reason we didn't win the league and the reason we're sitting at 4th and wanted to ask about peoples memories of Gallas. My memory is short because I was a teenager at the time but pretty sure I remember him having a shoddy mentality as captain and despite perhaps being okay for one season, overall I remember him as being pretty poor! Wondered what others with a better memory than myself thought about him. Is it hypocritical for him to comment? Is he just trying to get himself heard through talking breeze? Or does he genuinely have a point?

I like to think I have a fairly good memory, William Gallas’ time at Arsenal was in the main forgettable at best.

18 Jan 2024 09:22:31
Gallas … what a 🔧. did naff all at Arsenal. supposed to be a leader. he’s definitely in the top 5 worst ever Arsenal signings. baffled as to why we signed him in the first place.

18 Jan 2024 18:07:18
#1 memory of him is Birmingham City away in 2008.
He sat down in a strop. Was captain at the time.
Not one to talk about mentality.

18 Jan 2024 23:29:45
Gallas was a rock at his peak but due what happened to eduardo in the Birmingham game he had a mental breakdown at the end of the game. If you saw eduard’s leg you wouldn’t blame him plus the realisation that was the end of the opportunity to be premier league I think the whole team mentally collapsed. Not a leader but not a waste in my opinion understands how important mentality is to winning the league.

19 Jan 2024 15:16:08
Not going too much into Gallas' mentality but i'm of the opinion that he should have a right to comment even if he himself didn't have the strongest mentality. I myself haven't played proper football since i was 13 and yet i feel i should have a right to voice my opinion.

20 Jan 2024 08:56:01
Nice to see varied responses. Absolutely Iceman, the the right to voice opinions is what makes the site so great and discussions around football so engaging! I too believe Gallas has a right to voice his opinion and was just looking to drum up a discussion around it to see if people remember his time differently to me. I think the media also take snippets and quotes from other sources without context which often makes things said sound wildly different to the original but I suppose Murdoch and his cronies have to make money somehow and clicks on articles generate revenue!

Looking at the free transfer list as we have to worry about FFP. Josef Martinez looks like a good 6 month deal. Used to have a good goalscoring record in MLS.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2024 10:53:20
To be fair I've never heard of him but if he knows where the net is and us hungry to make it ripple put him on the maybe list.

I was wrong about our current forwards being capable of getting the goals we need and a 6 month deal for someone with a good scoring record would do no harm in my opinion. Mind you if Eddie was at a different club he'd probably be on our maybe list of natural goalscorers so maybe we do have the short term solution already if we adjust our game to suit Eddie.

14 Jan 2024 12:35:31
Wouldn’t it be better to look internally at youth if we can’t get our preferred transfers this month?
Look at what Guardiola did yesterday by bringing a relative unknown youth player on and he played with no fear and scored a fantastic winning goal.
I wish Arteta would take those kind of risks sometimes as we’ve obviously get some very talented youngsters at the club.

14 Jan 2024 16:12:48
Do we have any prolific in front of goal strikers in our junior ranks?

14 Jan 2024 18:16:25
Khayon Edwards and Cozier-Duberry are both worth giving minutes to.

14 Jan 2024 18:41:47
What are their scoring records like as in goals per game HG?

14 Jan 2024 19:45:37
Edwards has 7 goals in 10 games on the Premier League 2. Cozier has 5 in 8.

14 Jan 2024 20:13:10
They are wingers unfortunately.

15 Jan 2024 10:16:27
True but could offer something different when are first team players can’t hit a barn door.

15 Jan 2024 12:19:13
for what it's worth, grabbing any old striker who is available might make matters even worse. Either persist with Nketiah and let him get some confidence, or promote the youngsters. The last thing we want is to go back to a squad bloated with mediocrity; make it class or nothing, and a £100M striker is not going to arrive in this window.

Best to all. HB.

15 Jan 2024 14:49:41
Our strikers didn't become bad overnight, just need to change it up I reckon.

15 Jan 2024 17:46:53
Stick with what we have if nothing availble. I think all our boys deserved a well rested break and they will get this util next week. Keep the confidence unless we can get all out striker that's going to fit right in don't buy any old player just for the sake of buying and like sally states we managed without one for so long just need our shooting boots on.

15 Jan 2024 18:15:57
Unfortunately Sally we've probably been getting away with it until 3 weeks ago which lead myself and others to think we could cope with what we have. But unfortunately I and those others were wrong.

Either play to Eddie strengths or take a gambe elsewhere, if was often said about Arsene that repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting different results was a sign of his being delusioned, if that was true of Arsene it must also be true of Arteta.

12 Jan 2024 14:37:44
I suspect it's fair to assume that a landmark signing is unlikely in this window. I have a feeling that Arteta will soldier on and hope for the early and effective return of some injured players, and use the summer for more radical surgery up front.

Happy to be wrong, however HB.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2024 18:50:19
I've no idea what Arteta and the club will do HB but it's become very clear over the last 3 games that we are not good enough as we are. I thought the players we had could we improved in front of goal but its not happened and its costing us big style. If we get knocked out of the CL by Porto it would be awful and if dominated them but failed to get past them without trying to address our issues when we could have it would be even worse than awful.

12 Jan 2024 20:03:08
I hear you. I think we are caught between available funds for the desired players, and the rigours of FPP. I wonder if they cannot buy without selling, but can't risk selling and ending up with nobody. HB.

12 Jan 2024 20:23:26
I think your right John.
5 league games before we play Porto
2 home 3 away. If we have not been able to address our problems in front of goal then pressure on us when we play Porto will be immense.
I agree with you HB, players will have to be sold before any new players come in. Fees being touted for Toney, Vlahovic and all the other players we have been connected with, there will have to be a few players going out the door.
Lets hope a few days in the Dubai sun revilitise them, a bit like when we had a weekend away at Skegness back in the day.

13 Jan 2024 11:46:27
Very fair comments HB and Bill 👍

Are there no free agents who knew where the goal is and aren't afraid use it 😊😊😊😊.

10 Jan 2024 20:57:51
Not Arsenal related although our players are not immune, but crikey Andrea Perreira tonight hit the floor as if hit by a wrecking ball and he was barely touched trying to get Van Dijk sent off.

If he’s that badly hurt can we not just put a screen up and put him out of his misery? At the very least a yellow for simulation / overacting - it’s simulation to gain an advantage.

Hope he’s okay where do I send the flowers and grapes! Muppet COYG.

Love the post Sussex🤣🤣😘😘.

12 Jan 2024 12:59:19
Thanks Bill it just winds me up a bit like keepers feigning injury late on and falling to the ground to waste time. What happened to you had 6 or 8 seconds to release the ball, 10 yards further forward for dissent, 12 minutes injury time and while we`re at it jumpers for goalposts. If VAR is progress we are all in trouble COYG Raya and Ramsdale can do all the above though - happy with that :)

For a while now i've had a few things in my mind i wanted to write about. Somewhat surprisingly today i'm having a lot of free time in the evening so might as well take advantage of that.

About the latest games - apart from the Fulham game in my opinion our general play has been quite good excluding the obvious weak area, finishing. There's not a single in-form forward in the team at the moment so of course that will make things way harder than they should be. Has the pressure got to our players? If so, i hope we will use this break to relax a bit and hopefully that will result in a bit more composure in front of goal when we return.

In terms of January signings i'm not expecting much. Short term deals at best but that'd be fine as well. I believe we can improve the team if we want to. This is something my heart wants probably more than my head, but i'd take Giroud on loan or even on a 1,5 year contract in a heartbeat. Once dubbed as one of the best super subs and surely capable of starting the odd premier league game as well. AC Milan are 9 points behind the leaders in their league and out of UCL so he won't be missing much. Let's make it happen.

They say prices are inflated in January so let's use that to our advantage. Get some inflated fees on Nketiah and Smith Rowe (sorry but he's obviously not in Arteta's plans) , then get the short term deals to boost the end of this season and in the summer spend big.

Back to the current squad. I want to give some appreciation for someone who does not seem to be that loved among the fans - Jorginho. I get it that he's a very limited player. Reminds me of Arteta when he was asked to play pivot alongside the likes of Wilshere and Ramsey. He was not strong enough to protect the defense. But this team is different. Jorginho has Rice for company. And i think they might just be the perfect complimentary players for each other. What Jorginho can do extremely well? Play pivot. He can sit in the middle of the opposition block, receive the ball with his back turned, turn with the ball in a tight space and then play the pass. That's i would say the one and only main thing Rice is lacking. Rice plays outside the opposition block and then usually plays the ball to the side. So credit to Jorginho for being able to do something the absolute monster named Declan Rice cannot do.

Finally, i want to say something about the officiating. Not just VAR, but officiating in general. I've seen so many times the ref being placed absolutely perfectly when an "incident" happens. The ref let's play go on and when there's the next break, VAR will be checking the "incident". Why? Can't the on-field referee just say to his microphone "i saw it and this is the decision"? Are the on-field refs too scared to take responsibility or is VAR simply built in a way that it will check all the major incidents no matter what the on-field ref does? We see time and again VAR being criticised but i don't think it's fair to only put VAR in the spotlight. We should be talking about officiating as a whole instead.

So quite a few random things squeezed into a single post. Sorry for the somewhat disjointed structure but hopefully you've enjoyed the reading anyway!

I would like to see the wingers swap sides more often, and get in behind the packed box, and get the defence turning towards their own goal.

Our buld up is too slow, even the few teams that don't play a low block against, always have time to get every one behind the ball.

VAR, initially I thought it was good idea, the refs need help, especially from the con men on the pitch. But it hasn't helped, if anything it's worse. I watched a few cup games where VAR wasn't available, and generally the games were a much better watch.

09 Jan 2024 20:46:51
Absolutely Davy mate. last season during games Saka and Gabi were swapping wings and pulling defenders all over the place.
Also like you said me don't make defenders turn, instead we try to play neat little one twos in a packed penalty area and it doesn't come off.

09 Jan 2024 23:01:31
Agree totally with the above and yes get Giroud absolutely quality.

10 Jan 2024 23:43:14
I watched a Championship game recently without VAR. It was so much better.

11 Jan 2024 07:47:56
Agree the game is better off without var.

11 Jan 2024 19:33:38
Personally i'd like var to be another assistant to the main ref. I'd like them to be able to freely talk and just like with the linesmen (at least i imagine the linesmen work with the main ref like this) the ref would be able to ask the video referee if he saw an incident and if he thought it was a foul. And the video ref could notify the on-pitch ref for any incident he saw fit to talk about. So basically make the interaction between them less restricted. And ditch the var check screens and long pauses. The video ref can watch the game live from a different perspective and rewind once or twice if needed. Surely that's enough to come to a respectable decision?

So in a nutshell i want var to be far more usable for the on-field ref and far less intrusive for everyone else.

12 Jan 2024 11:07:05
Wish football would do what rugby do show it on the big screen stop the clock and you can hear the refs talk to each other its so much better.

{Ed002's Note - Football fans are very different to rugby fans and it would never work.}

14 Jan 2024 18:45:47
I agree most football fans find it difficult to see what they don't want see and not defend their teams interest regardless of evidence or even fact. Many fans are as dogmatic in their beliefs as religious people.
